Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surface-History of the Earth The Surface History dealt with in this book is based directly upon two great recent advances in our knowledge of the earth's crust: the Radioactivity of the Rocks and Isostasy. The nature of both are herein discussed and explained. Both are recognized to-day by most men of science as facts. These two fundamental elements of the surface constitution of the globe lead naturally to certain great events which at long intervals are recurrent in the history of. The earth's surface. Such are (a) the slow advance of transgressional seas upon the continents; those seas in which the sandstones and limestones, &c., so common over all parts of the land surface, have been laid down (5) the retrogression of those seas taking place after many millions of years and then, finally, (6) the rising of the mountain ranges, built mainly of the sediments which were collected in the depths of the former continental waters. For the genesis of the mountains great lateral as well as vertical forces are required, and these also arise naturally out of those fundamental elements of surface structure: Radioactivity and Isostasy. In the course of this history we recognize eras of tensile crust - stresses changing gradually to eras of compressive stresses. Inter 4124 we find an explanation of the limited scale of the surface relief of the earth; of the causes which have controlled the allocation of land and water upon the globe; and of the major geographical relations of continents and oceans. It comprises not merely all of which the structure is laid open in mountain precipices, or in cliffs overhanging the river or the sea, or whatever the miner may reveal in artificial excavations; but the whole of that outer covering of the planet on which we are enabled to reason by observations made at or near the sur face. These reasonings may extend to a depth of several miles, perhaps ten miles; but even then it may be said, that such a thickness is no more than I%3th part of the distance from the surface to the centre. The remark is just; but although the dimensions of such a crust are, in truth, insignificant when com pared to the entire globe, yet they are vast and of magnificent extent in relation to man, and to the organic beings which peo ple our globe. Referring to this standard of magnitude, the geologist may admire the ample limits of his domain, and admit, at the same time, that not only the exterior of the planet, but the entire earth, is but an atom in the midst of the countless worlds surveyed by the astronomer. It had in fact been ascertained many years before, by the State surveyors of New York (who called it the Potsdam to lie at the base of the whole Silurian series. As such it had been pointed out to me in 1841, in the valley of the Mohawk, by Mr. James Hall, * and its position was correctly described by Mr. Emmons, on the borders of Lake Champlain, where I examined it in 1842. It has there the character of a shallow water deposit, ripple-marked throughout a considerable thickness, and full of a species of Lingula. The flat valves of this shell, of a dark color, are so numerous, and so arranged in horizontal layers, as to play the part of mica, causing the rock to divide into laminae, as in some micaceous sandstones.
