Book excerpt: With the increasing demand for infrastructure construction as the global economy progresses, the need for exploration and utilization of deep underground space becomes more crucial. Various deep underground projects are planned, are under construction, and have been built to encounter great construction challenges due to the complex geo-environment such as strong tectonic movement, fragile geo-environment and complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical conditions. These deep engineering projects could be endangered by different kinds of geological disasters, such as intense rockburst, large deformation, strong water inrush, and large-scale collapse, which might result in massive loss of life and economic damage during the construction of deep underground projects. It is necessary to take proactive measures to ensure that the development of deep engineering projects is risk-informed and sustainable. Efforts are being called for strengthening science and technology innovation and cooperation in geological disaster mitigation and sustainable development during the construction of deep engineering projects. It is paramount to use new technologies and international cooperation to jointly tackle the geological disasters risks and achieve sustainable development. To mitigate the risk of geological disaster in deep engineering under the complicate geo-environment, the mechanism of the formation and evolution of geological disasters in deep engineering needs to be understood. The testing, monitoring, simulation, risk assessment and early warning methods for geological disaster in deep engineering are also needed urgently. New theories, methods and techniques related to the mechanism, warning and risk mitigation of geological disasters in deep engineering will be extremely helpful for the construction safety of deep engineering.

Book excerpt: Water inrush (WI) is one of the most dangerous geological disasters in underground engineering, with significant human casualties and economic losses. To prevent and control WI disasters, great efforts have been made to address WI mechanisms for more than half a century. In particular, the seepage instability theory is hitherto one of the most widely used theoretical models. This theory portrays that the seepage system will undergo structural instability when the initial values of permeability and boundary pressure meet certain conditions, which manifests that the permeability parameter is one of the most valuable indicators to unveil WI mechanisms. However, rock permeability is determined by its internal structural characteristics, which can be affected by water chemical composition, stress environment, and temperature. In this regard, it is of great necessity and importance to facilitate a better understanding of the holistic impacts of multi-field coupling on rock internal structure and deformation failure characteristics. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global forum for presenting and disseminating the latest advancements of WI mechanisms, which entails the characterization of physical and laboratory tests, 3D reconstruction of rock internal structure, numerical approaches, theoretical models under multi-field coupling, and filed date analysis methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In human social development, the consumption of fossil energy, especially coal, has promoted economic prosperity, cultural exchanges, and social progress. With shallow coal resources exhausted, coal mining engineering has entered deep areas. The coal geology environment of the deep area differs from that of the shallow. With mining depth increasing, all the stress of buried rock stratum and surrounding rock and gas pressure of coal seam increase gradually. In addition, geological structures, such as complex faults, big folds, and thick-hard roofs, will increase the risk of coal mining. Once the dynamic disaster occurs, it will induce miner casualties and property losses. So, it is urgent to identify mine hazards, such as coal and gas outbursts, rock bursts, gas explosions, and coal fires, and research their formation mechanism, occurrence, and development process. Furthermore, prevention and control methods should be proposed to reduce mine disasters. Only in this way can we promote the safe, green, and efficient development of coal mining. This Topical Collection, titled "Mine Hazards Identification, Prevention, and Control," aims to allow global researchers to conduct a broader scientific and technological discussion on such advances to improve the prevention and control level of disasters encountered during underground coal mining. The discussion topics include, but are not limited to, the basic experiments, modeling, numerical simulation, and field tests of aforementioned disasters.

Book excerpt: This book discusses a wide range of health-related mining issues, with particular reference to occupational diseases, metal toxicity, postural injuries in miners, modern fire safety controls, noise-induced hearing loss prevention, and noise mapping. Mining plays a central role in the development of modern civilization. By providing the essential raw materials, mining ensures progress, safety, and comfort of people. However, this necessary activity comes with several woes, the most important of which are occupational health hazards. Mines act as sources of constant danger and risk to the miners irrespective of the scale of mining, such as large-scale industrial mining or small-scale artisanal mining. Not only are there accidents, but continuous exposure to dust, metal toxicity, hazardous gases and fumes, and loud noises, giving rise to a variety of diseases to mine workers. The comprehensive coverage of issues and the case studies will make this book an essential reference and critical reading. Medical geology is a necessary discipline in earth sciences. Unfortunately, not much literature is available on this subject. Therefore, this book is essential for practicing engineers and supervisors in mines, health and safety professionals, researchers, and mining industry students.
