Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Part of the popular Hiking Geology series * Appendices cover additional geologic information for the non-geologist * Everything needed to plan the trip, including information about permits, lodging and camping, mule rides, and recommended day trips Etched on the Grand Canyon's steep walls are stories of how this majestic landscape came to be: volcanic islands, stark deserts, and tranquil seas come and gone, and histories of plants and animals that have made this place their home. You'll see this story up close on the trail with the help of Hiking the Grand Canyon's Geology. In eighteen excursions, there's something for everyone-from the most popular rim-to-river trails (Havasu Canyon Trail) to gentle, half-day rim walks (Red Butte Trail) to rugged and remote multi-day backpack trips (Lava Falls Route). Geologists Lon Abbott and Teri Cook both teach at Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona, where they lead hiking trips to study geology in the field.

Book excerpt: This senior thesis project is a snapshot of a long-term project that I have been a part of for the better part of my academic career at Hanover College. The map I have chosen to showcase is the Greenway and Rim Trails map, with the shuttle routes included in it. I chose this map simply because it was the hardest map to create, and I am very proud of it. The overarching goal of this project is to publish GIS maps illustrating the hiking trails in Grand Canyon National Park to a website. This website belongs to Dr. Bevis, a place where he posts educational content about Geology and Field Trip Trail Guides for the Grand Canyon. The first summer (2021), another student and I created the GIS maps from data provided by Dr. Bevis. The next academic year we presented these maps at a GSA conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The second summer (2022) I took on the challenge of converting our GIS maps to the updated Esri software, ArcGIS Pro, by myself. The main goal of this conversion is to create a mobile app, so the maps could be viewed in the field. The actual creation of the application was done by another student, who is proficient in computer science. ArcGIS Pro has the capability to share a web map as a web app, which necessitated the conversion.
