Book excerpt: Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources Enables readers to save time and effort in exploring and exploiting shale gas and other unconventional fossil fuels by making use of advanced predictive tools Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources highlights novel concepts and techniques for the geophysical exploration of shale and other tight hydrocarbon reservoirs, focusing on artificial intelligence approaches for modeling and predicting key reservoir properties such as pore pressure, water saturation, and wellbore stability. Numerous application examples and case studies present real-life data from different unconventional hydrocarbon fields such as the Barnett Shale (USA), the Williston Basin (USA), and the Berkine Basin (Algeria). Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources explores a wide range of reservoir properties, including modeling of the geomechanics of shale gas reservoirs, petrophysics analysis of shale and tight sand gas reservoirs, and prediction of hydraulic fracturing effects, fluid flow, and permeability. Sample topics covered in Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources include: Calculation of petrophysical parameter curves for non-conventional reservoir modeling and characterization Comparison of the Levenberg-Marquardt and conjugate gradient learning methods for total organic carbon prediction in the Barnett shale gas reservoir Use of pore effective compressibility for quantitative evaluation of low resistive pays and identifying sweet spots in shale reservoirs Pre-drill pore pressure estimation in shale gas reservoirs using seismic genetic inversion Using well-log data to classify lithofacies of a shale gas reservoir Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals working on unconventional hydrocarbon exploration and in geoengineering projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploration and characterization of conventional and unconventional reservoirs using seismic technologies are among the main activities of upstream technology groups and business units of oil and gas operators. However, these activities frequently encounter difficulties in quantitative seismic interpretation due to remaining confusion and new challenges in the fast developing field of seismic petrophysics. Seismic Petrophysics in Quantitative Interpretation shows how seismic interpretation can be made simple and robust by integration of the rock physics principles with seismic and petrophysical attributes bearing on the properties of both conventional (thickness, net/gross, lithology, porosity, permeability, and saturation) and unconventional (thickness, lithology, organic richness, thermal maturity) reservoirs. Practical solutions to existing interpretation problems in rock physics-based amplitude versus offset (AVO) analysis and inversion are addressed in the book to streamline the workflows in subsurface characterization. Although the book is aimed at oil and gas industry professionals and academics concerned with utilization of seismic data in petroleum exploration and production, it could also prove helpful for geotechnical and completion engineers and drillers seeking to better understand how seismic and sonic data can be more thoroughly utilized.

Book excerpt: Machine Learning for Subsurface Characterization develops and applies neural networks, random forests, deep learning, unsupervised learning, Bayesian frameworks, and clustering methods for subsurface characterization. Machine learning (ML) focusses on developing computational methods/algorithms that learn to recognize patterns and quantify functional relationships by processing large data sets, also referred to as the "big data." Deep learning (DL) is a subset of machine learning that processes "big data" to construct numerous layers of abstraction to accomplish the learning task. DL methods do not require the manual step of extracting/engineering features; however, it requires us to provide large amounts of data along with high-performance computing to obtain reliable results in a timely manner. This reference helps the engineers, geophysicists, and geoscientists get familiar with data science and analytics terminology relevant to subsurface characterization and demonstrates the use of data-driven methods for outlier detection, geomechanical/electromagnetic characterization, image analysis, fluid saturation estimation, and pore-scale characterization in the subsurface. - Learn from 13 practical case studies using field, laboratory, and simulation data - Become knowledgeable with data science and analytics terminology relevant to subsurface characterization - Learn frameworks, concepts, and methods important for the engineer's and geoscientist's toolbox needed to support

Book excerpt: A multiple sill about one hundred and fifty feet thick intruded into the Three Forks and Sappington formations in Lime Kiln Canyon, Madison County, Montana, is accompanied by several smaller bodies ranging up to six feet in thickness which lie within the Sappington and Lodgepole formations. Chemical analyses and norm calculations indicate that the rocks of the intrusions belong to the Andesite group as outlined by Daly, and that the differentiation of these rocks was slight, but dominated by the felsic group of minerals. In addition, consideration of the variation of the trace elements barium and strontium, as well as that of the major elements, suggests that the magma was contaminated by the assimilations of country rock. This conclusion is confirmed by the examination of thin sections which reveals the intrusion to contain numerous inclusions of carbonate minerals; these are believed to have been derived from the country rock rather than from hydrothermal activity. The igneous rocks have been affected by regional metamorphism of greenschist facies rank, which caused alteration of the feldspars to sericite and paragonite, and of the ferromagnesian minerals to chlorite and antigorite. The age of the intrusions is determined as late Cretaceous. the mode of intrusion is somewhat problematic, the evidence suggests that assimilation was insufficient to account for the volume of the intrusives and futher, that the country rock underwent mechanical separation to accomodate the intruding magma. The shap contacts of the intrusions against the host rock would seem to militate against the magma itself having caused this separation by forceful injection. It is proposed therefore that the intrusions are the result of magma rising to fill in lens-shaped cavities developed between beds of the sediumentary rock at the onset of the deformation.
