Book Synopsis Debris-flow Hazards and Related Phenomena by : Matthias Jakob
Download or read book Debris-flow Hazards and Related Phenomena written by Matthias Jakob and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-26 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With climate change and deforestation, debris flows and debris avalanches have become the most significant landslide hazards in many countries. In recent years there have been numerous debris flow avalanches in Southern Europe, South America and the Indian Subcontinent, resulting in major catastrophes and large loss of life. This is therefore a major high-profile problem for the world's governments and for the engineers and scientists concerned. Matthias Jakob and Oldrich Hungr are ideally suited to edit this book. Matthias Jakob has worked on debris flow for over a decade and has had numerous papers published on the topic, as well as working as a consultant on debris flow for municipal and provincial governments. Oldrich Hungr has worked on site investigations on debris flow, avalanches and rockfall, with emphasis on slope stability analysis and evaluation of risks to roads in built-up areas. He has also developed mathematical models for landslide dynamic analysis. They have invited world-renowned experts to joint them in this book.
Book Synopsis Regional Pathways to Complexity by : P. A. J. Attema
Download or read book Regional Pathways to Complexity written by P. A. J. Attema and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Global Groundwater Resources and Management by : B.S. Paliwal
Download or read book Global Groundwater Resources and Management written by B.S. Paliwal and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book on “Global Groundwater Resources and Management” has been aimed at growing recognition of depleting world groundwater resources, their contamination, future requirement of the fast growing human population of the world and urgent need of a better groundwater resources management system. The issues are quite complex but now they have crossed all the political boundaries and have become a common cause. The biggest challenge before the scientific community is to integrate valuable scientific advances and technological progress to solve the issue based on holistic and effective sustainable groundwater management. The book comprises the selected papers presented from all over the world at the 33rd International Geological Congress, Oslo, Norway, August 6 -14. 2008. A referee system of high, international standard has been used to review all the papers thoroughly before accepting them for publication. Each paper has been reviewed by at least two internationally recognized subject experts. In many cases as many as 5 or 6 subject experts have been contacted for the review work for a single paper because a much delayed response from the first two reviewers. Fortunately, all of them have sent their review comments simultaneously but at a later date. The book is broadly divided into five sections dealing with key aspects of global groundwater resources and management 1. Groundwater Resources and Management 2. Hydogeological Conditions, Groundwater Assessment and Modeling 3. Hydrogeochemistry and Contamination of Groundwater Resources 4. Exploitation of Groundwater and its Recharge 5. Hazardous Groundwater Conditions In total 31 research papers from Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, China, Finland, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Uzbekistan were selected from the General Symposium: Hydrogeology of the 33rd I.G.C. Oslo-2008. Reviewers were from countries like Argentina, Bangladesh, China, Finland, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Thailand, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
Book Synopsis The "numbers" of Molise mountain municipalities (Italy) by : Cristiano Pesaresi
Download or read book The "numbers" of Molise mountain municipalities (Italy) written by Cristiano Pesaresi and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focusses attention on the social-demographic, agricultural and tourist aspects of the 29 municipalities of the Molise Region, in order to provide new elements and details in a distributive and diachronic analysis and underline the link between new data and old problems which require collective actions to reach common purposes and to enhance the local resources according to the different vocations. After the examination of numerous statistical data which are also represented through GIS elaborations, quality of products and processes, multi-functional and inter-sectorial relationships, fast and slow scenarios, new or renewed forms of tourism accommodation, internet and tourist social technologies, social agriculture and neo-agrarianism, slow and creative tourism, the high environmental quality, enriched by historical and cultural heritage, become some of the keywords around which the geographical analysis is conducted. The present study seeks both to provide useful input for a meticulous and weighted planning, according to a resource-based approach, and to define a reference framework for people who are no longer live in Molise Region and Italy, but who are still emotionally attached to their native lands and keep alive the memories for their origins or for the origins of their parents.

Book Synopsis Natural Stone and World Heritage by : Rossana Bellopede
Download or read book Natural Stone and World Heritage written by Rossana Bellopede and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apulian limestones constitute the historic building constructions of the Puglia region (in the south of Italy) named trulli (representing an outstanding universal value for UNESCO), but also other stone buildings of the well-known Itria Valley. Trulli are drywall (mortarless) constructions made of roughly worked limestone blocks collected from neighbouring fields. The limestone for trulli is quarried from different Apulian localities and, together with another local lithotype, represents the stone heritage of the Itria Valley. This book begins with an introduction to the region of southern Italy where trulli and other typical stone architecture can be found. The Itria Valley with its towns and landscape and the town of Alberobello are described from an architectural point of view. The second section describes the different examples of building constructions in local stone of the Itria Valley, focusing on ancient and contemporary quarries. In this part petrographic and physical mechanical characteristics of the main kind of limestones are reported and discussed. The third part focuses on the main examples of stone architecture of Itria Valley, distinguishing the historical rural buildings from the other historical civil ones. In this section particular attention is given to best practices of evaluation action, protection rules and restoration methods for stone heritage in Itria Valley and Alberobello. This book serves as a useful source of information to geologists, archaeologists, architects, historians and stone industry operators specifically, and to academic and non-academic communities, travellers, and tourism industry operators in general. The book will also be of interest to students, researchers, and rock enthusiasts spanning all age groups and academic levels.
