Book excerpt: Nebraska is the first comprehensive examination of the patterns of Nebraska’s resources, population, economy, climate, and landscape to be published in many years. Focusing especially on the people of Nebraska and the interaction between the environment and human use of the earth, Professor Baltensperger begins with a discussion of the physical environment and resources of the state and ties early patterns of development to the need to adjust settlement systems and agricultural practices to a subhumid climate. The role of energy-intensive agriculture in the state’s economy is a central aspect of the book’s examination of human interaction with the environment: The impact of modern technology on Nebraska’s agricultural system and on its population receives considerable attention, as do the problems associated with recent agricultural developments. Also scrutinized are the land-use conflicts generated by urban growth and by the demands of an urban society on rural Nebraska.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Nebraska There is a lack of geography literature in Nebraska. Various state and United States publications have been issued, but most of them are now not accessible, and none of them were written for use in schools. This elementary text is intended primarily for use in the graded and rural schools. However, its subjects are presented in a way that may recommend the book to general readers as well, in the absence of a more complete treatment of the subject. The subject matter of the volume is based for the most part on the author's personal experience in the state while working on the Nebraska Geological Survey, Nebraska Soil Survey and for the United States Geological Survey. The author has also obtained data from publications of the following authors: Barbour, Bessey, Blackman, Clements, Darton, Johnson, Lyon, Loveland, Sheldon, Swezey and Todd. A few references are cited in each chapter. Of these, the topographic maps and folios shown by plate III, though inexpensive, are very important for class studies. The price of the maps is ten cents each, or, at wholesale, six dollars a hundred, except the Omaha Specials, which are ten cents each. The folios are twenty-five cents each. These and all other geological publications of the National Government, when accessible, may be obtained from the Director of the United States Geological Survey, Washington, D. C. Part IV of the XXI and XXII Annual Reports, Professional Papers 17 and 32, and Water Supply Papers 12, 29, 70, are among the valuable Nebraska references which have been issued by the United States Geological Survey. If accessible, these and volume one of the Nebraska Geological Survey should be consulted freely by the teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negative Geographies is the first edited collection to chart the political, conceptual, and ethical consequences of how the underexplored problem of the negative might be posed for contemporary cultural geography. Using a variety of case studies and empirical investigations, these chapters consider how the negative, through annihilations, gaps, ruptures, and tears, can work within or against the terms of affirmationism. The collection opens up new avenues through which key problems of cultural geography might be differently posed and points to the ways that it might be possible and desirable to think, theorize, and exemplify negation.

This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Nebraska through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into NebraskaÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Nebraska while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.
