Book excerpt: For the seventh consecutive year, the AGILE promotes the publication of a book collecting high-level scientific papers from unpublished fundamental scientific research in the field of Geographic Information Science. As the agenda for Europe 2020 is currently being set, this book demonstrates how geographic information science is at the heart of Europe. The contributions open perspectives for innovative services that will strengthen our European economy, and which will inform citizens about their environment while preserving their privacy. The latest challenges of spatial data infrastructures are addressed, such as the connection with the Web vocabularies or the representation of genealogy. User generated data (through social networks or through interactive cameras and software) is also an important breakthrough in our domain. A trend to deal more and more with time, events, ancient data, a nd activities is noticeable this year as well. This volume collects the 23 best full papers presented during the 16th AGILE Conference on Geographic Information Science, held between 14 and 17 May 2013 in Leuven, Belgium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an informative and intriguing overview of the most scenic landscapes of Belgium and Luxembourg. Geodiversity is emphasized, for example the periglacial features in the Hautes Fagnes area, the planation surfaces in the Ardennes and Oesling, and the famous caves of Han/Lesse and Remouchamps. The book’s chief goals are to provide the reader with enjoyable and informative descriptions of the selected sites within their regional geographical and geological settings; to offer an up-to-date survey of the evolution of Belgium’s and Luxembourg’s landscape; and to share additional information on the cultural value of the respective sites wherever appropriate. The book is a richly illustrated reference work that makes accessible for the first time a wealth of information currently scattered among many national and regional journals. It will benefit earth scientists, environmental scientists, tourism geographers and conservationists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a city based its planning decisions on the needs of an international bureaucracy rather than on the traditional needs of local residents and businesses, how would that city change? Alex G. Papadopoulos addresses this question with a detailed study of how the nineteenth-century quartiers of Leopold and Nord-Est in Brussels have been transformed materially and functionally since the European Communities decided to locate their administrative headquarters there in 1957. Drawing on game and rational-choice theories, spatial analysis, and urban morphology studies, Papadopoulos analyzes how the landscape of Brussels's center has evolved over the last three decades under the influence of successive coalitions of local and foreign elites. He describes how international real-estate developers form ephemeral, flexible, and specialized regimes of cooperation with governmental organizations at all levels and with special-interest lobbies to carry out major urban projects, while local neighborhood groups, conservationists, and political factions such as the Green Party oppose them with qualitatively similar regimes of resistance.

Book excerpt: The Moselle has been one of the main arteries of European Communication and transportation for centuries. The Romans used it as a main thoroughfare from southern to northern Europe and also began the improvements to its navigation that have continued intermittently through the industrial revolution to the present day. Professor Cermakian focuses on the historical, political, and geographical factors in the use and canalization of this international river - a focus that is derived from his interest in the details of standardizing transport networks and policy as an important part of 'European integration, ' which he sees both as a long historical movement and as a present endeavour under EEC. The book offers a history of the political economy of an important river, a symbol for many of the spirit of Europe. (University of Toronto Department of Geography Research Publications 14)
