Book Synopsis Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria by : Adegbola Ojo
Download or read book Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria written by Adegbola Ojo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses crime-science and traditional criminological approaches to explore urban crime in the rapidly urbanising country Nigeria, as a case study for urban crime in developing nations. In Africa’s largest democracy, rapid unmanaged growth in its cities combined with decaying public infrastructure mean that risk factors accumulate and deepen the potential for urban crime. This book includes a thorough explanation of key concepts alongside an examination of the contemporary configuration, dynamics, dimensions, drivers and potential responses to urban crime challenges. The authors also discuss a range of methodological techniques and applications that can be used, including spatial technologies to generate new data for analysis. It brings together history, theory, trends, patterns, drivers, repercussions and responses to provide a deep analysis of the challenges that confront urban dwellers. Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria offers academics, researchers, governments, civil society organisations, citizens, and international partners a tool with which to engage in a serious dialogue about crime within cities, based on evidence and good practices from inside and outside sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Synopsis Peaceful Surrender by : Fernando Collantes
Download or read book Peaceful Surrender written by Fernando Collantes and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration to the cities had been a part of European rural life long before the start of modern industrialisation and urbanisation. In the era of modern development, however, rural-urban migration intensified in an unprecedented way and many rural communities depopulated. While during the pre-industrial period migration had contributed to the economic and social reproduction of rural communities, it now challenged the continuity of the rural lifestyle. This book analyses the topic for the case of Spain, which in the twentieth century experienced one of the most intense processes of rural depopulation in modern Europe. The interaction between Spanish industrialisation and rural migration, the demographic implications of agrarian change, the obstacles to the development of rural non-farm activities, the rural problems of access to infrastructures and services, the role of public policy, and the consequences of depopulation for the rural community are the central elements of this study, which inserts the Spanish case within its European context. Distanced from both the anti-modern stance that idealises paradise lost and the Panglossian mood that welcomes anything that came with modernisation, the book explains how the adaptive strategies put into practice by rural populations led to a “peaceful surrender” of traditional rural society.
Book Synopsis The Geography of Creativity by : Gunnar Törnqvist
Download or read book The Geography of Creativity written by Gunnar Törnqvist and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Gunnar Törnqvist, one of the world's most distinguished economic geographers, can fairly claim to have discovered the notion of the geography of creativity over thirty years ago. This remarkable book summarises his immensely original and important research on the subject, which now dominates the geographical literature. It is the book that the world has been waiting for him to publish.' Sir Peter Hall, University College London, UK 'This book offers a comprehensive perspective on the salience of context in fostering or hindering creativity. After several decades of research and teaching, Gunnar Törnqvist has become a foremost authority on the subject. Here, his elegant conceptual overview is complemented by a methodologically-innovative scrutiny of career journeys, including those of Nobel Prize laureates. The Geography of Creativity will be warmly welcomed by not only cultural geographers, but also by scholars in various fields of social science and humanities.' Anne Buttimer, University College Dublin, Ireland What is creativity and who exactly is creative? In this insightful and highly readable book, Gunnar Tornqvist attempts to answer these questions by arguing that geographical millieux are hotbeds for creativity and renewal places where pioneers in art, technology and science have gathered and developed their special abilities. In light of ongoing social and economic transformations, special attention is paid to the institutional settings in firms and universities. The goal is to identify those features which facilitate and those which impede the creative process. Individual lives are illustrated through the autobiographies of hundreds of Nobel Laureates. Their life paths reveal the importance of geographic mobility and contact patterns for the development of creativity and international prestige. From these biographies we can also see how local millieux and schools have influenced many scientists. The Geography of Creativity will be of great benefit to academics and students in regional science, economic geography and economics.
