Book excerpt: In the past decade, the coalbed natural gas (CBNG) industry in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has experienced pronounced growth. However, production of natural gas has been accompanied by concerns regarding the disposal of groundwater produced with the gas. In response, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality approved numeric standards to be applied to several rivers entering the state from Wyoming, including the Powder River, limiting electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) in these streams. This research assesses the natural variability of water quality in the Powder River and the effects of CBNG co-produced water by comparing historic data to modern data collected from 2006 to 2008. Oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotopes are evaluated as tools for identification of the source of water in the Powder River. [delta]13C proves to be a good indicator of the presence of CBNG water, which has a value distinct from that of surface water. The quality of water in the river, as it relates to the Montana standards, depends strongly on the flow of the river. At high flow, the EC and SAR of the river are within Montana standards. At low flow, most samples exceed these limits, including samples collected in Montana from streams which do not receive discharge of produced water. Some CBNG water is present in the Powder River. However, the current Montana standards are not well-suited to identify this component because they do not account for the natural seasonal variability of water quality in the Powder River.

Book excerpt: Coal bed natural gas (CBNG) product water is usually disposed into nearby constructed disposal ponds. Geochemistry of product water is not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to collect product water samples at outfalls and corresponding disposal ponds and monitor pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), alkalinity, iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), boron (B), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), cadmium (Cd), and barium (Ba). From Na, Ca, and Mg measurements, sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) were calculated, and used in a regression model. Additionally, the mobility of trace elements in the disposal ponds was examined based on sediment fractionation studies. Sediment samples were separated into exchangeable, carbonate bound, iron-manganese oxide bound, organically bound, and residual mineral fractions to determinate the fate of arsenic (As), selenium (Se), barium (Ba), and iron (Fe). Outfalls and corresponding disposal ponds were sampled from five different watersheds including Cheyenne River (CHR), Belle Fourche River (BFR), Little Powder River (LPR), Powder River (PR), and Tongue River (TR) within the Powder River Basin (PRB), Wyoming from 2003 to 2005. Results suggest that outfalls are chemically different from corresponding disposal ponds. Sodium, alkalinity, and pH all tend to increase, possibly due to environmental factors such as evaporation, while calcium decreased from outfalls to associated discharge ponds due to calcite precipitation. Watersheds examined in this study were chemically different form each other and most discharge ponds within individual watersheds tended to increase in Na and SAR from 2003 to 2005. Most trace metal concentrations in the produced water increased from outfall to disposal pond except for Ba. In disposal ponds, Ba, As, and B concentrations increased from 2003 to 2005. Geochemical modeling predicted precipitation and dissolution reactions as controlling processes for Al, Cu, and Ba concentrations in CBNG produced water. Adsorption and desorption reactions appear to control As, Mo, and B concentrations in CBNG water in disposal ponds. Since discharge pond water was chemically changing as a function of watershed chemistry, I predicted SAR of discharge pond water using a regression model. The predicted discharge pond water results suggested a high correlation (R2 = 0.83) to outfall SAR. Within the pond sediment, Fe and Ba concentrations did not appear to have an overall increase in any fraction among years. However, As and Se concentrations, though low, increased between years in the exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions. In the near future, As and Se concentrations may increase to levels that would induce chronic toxicity in wildlife and livestock. Coalbed natural gas pond sediments should be monitored for As and Se concentrations in the water soluble fraction periodically and at the termination of production to prevent potential damages to livestock and wildlife. Overall, results of this study will be useful for landowners, water quality managers, and industry in properly managing product water from natural gas extraction.

Book excerpt: Coal and Coalbed Gas: Future Directions and Opportunities, Second Edition introduces the latest in coal geology research and the engineering of gas extraction. Importantly, the second edition examines how, over the last 10 years, research has both changed focus and where it is conducted. This shift essentially depicts "a tale of two worlds"—one half (Western Europe, North America) moving away from coal and coalbed gas research and production towards cleaner energy resources, and the other half (Asia–Pacific region, Eastern Europe, South America) increasing both research and usage of coal. These changes are marked by a precipitous fall in coalbed gas production in North America; however, at the same time there has been a significant rise in coal and coalbed gas production in Australia, China, and India. The driver for higher production and its associated research is a quest for affordable energy and economic security that a large resource base brings to any country like Australia’s first large-scale coalbed gas to liquid natural gas projects supplying the demand for cleaner burning LNG to the Asian-Pacific region. Since the last edition of this book, global climate change policies have more forcibly emphasized the impact of methane from coal mines and placed these emissions equal to, or even more harmful than, CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in general. Governmental policies have prioritized capture, use, and storage of CO2, burning coal in new highly efficient low emission power plants, and gas pre-drainage of coal mines. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and China are also introducing new research into alternative, non-fuel uses for coal, such as carbon fibers, nanocarbons, graphene, soil amendments, and as an unconventional ore for critical elements. New to this edition: Each chapter is substantially changed from the 1st edition including expanded and new literature citations and reviews, important new data and information, new features and materials, as well as re-organized and re-designed themes. Importantly, three new chapters cover global coal endowment and gas potential, groundwater systems related to coalbed gas production and biogenic gas generation as well as the changing landscape of coal and coalbed gas influenced by global climate change and net-zero carbon greenhouse gas emissions. FOREWORD When I reviewed the first edition of this book, my initial thought was, "Do we need another book on coal geology?" and then I read it and realised, "Yes, we need this book" and my students downloaded copies as soon as it was available. So now we come to 2023, and a lot has happened in the past decade. For a different reason we might ask if we still need this book, or even coal geoscientists and engineers, as the world aims for rapid decarbonisation of the energy sector and a reduction of coal as a feedstock for industrial resources, like steel manufacture.

Book excerpt: In some coalbeds, naturally occurring water pressure holds methane-the main component of natural gas-fixed to coal surfaces and within the coal. In a coalbed methane (CBM) well, pumping water from the coalbeds lowers this pressure, facilitating the release of methane from the coal for extraction and use as an energy source. Water pumped from coalbeds during this process-CBM 'produced water'-is managed through some combination of treatment, disposal, storage, or use, subject to compliance with federal and state regulations. CBM produced water management can be challenging for regulatory agencies, CBM well operators, water treatment companies, policy makers, landowners, and the public because of differences in the quality and quantity of produced water; available infrastructure; costs to treat, store, and transport produced water; and states' legal consideration of water and produced water. Some states consider produced water as waste, whereas others consider it a beneficial byproduct of methane production. Thus, although current technologies allow CBM produced water to be treated to any desired water quality, the majority of CBM produced water is presently being disposed of at least cost rather than put to beneficial use. This book specifically examines the Powder River, San Juan, Raton, Piceance, and Uinta CBM basins in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The conclusions and recommendations identify gaps in data and information, potential beneficial uses of CBM produced water and associated costs, and challenges in the existing regulatory framework.

Book excerpt: Development of energy and mineral resources in the Powder River structural basin in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana (fig. 1) includes coalbed natural gas, conventional oil and gas, and coal mining. A common byproduct of coalbed natural gas (CBNG) development is discharge of groundwater that commonly is saline or unsuitable for irrigation of crops and has unknown effects on the aquatic communities inhabiting streams that receive the water (Bureau of Land Management, 2009).

In the last decade the state has seen dramatic increases in energy development such as coal, wind energy, and most notably coal bed natural gas (CBNG). With the increasing rate of natural gas production in Wyoming it is necessary to consider compounding factors which may contribute to potential hydrologic degradation. The climate over much of Wyoming is semiarid; therefore, removal of surface vegetation can cause flashy runoff, increasing risk of erosion. The full environmental impact of energy development on soil and water resources in Wyoming is yet to be revealed. Computer modeling can only provide a general concept of the scope and direction of potential impacts. However, correctly applied, it can provide a scientifically based framework for resource managers when making land management decisions. In this project, water quality in a small tributary to Muddy Creek was monitored and the subwatershed was modeled using AGWA to determine potential changes in surface runoff and sediment loading. Water chemistry models were reviewed and salinity modeling using QUAL2K was attempted. The potential to append a water chemistry model to AGWA was assessed as part of a larger cooperative project. Future research will endeavor to provide resource scientists and land management agencies with a user friendly and dependable tool to aid in land management decisions.
