Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genres of Emergency offers literary genre as a way to understand and negotiate the varied states of emergency and crisis that have become a fixture of our contemporary world. Building on a critical study of the literature written during and about the State of Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in India (1975 - 1977), the study establishes emergency and its genres as an important interpretative site: an exceptionally violent episode marked as a one-off crisis, which also functions as a locus for an ongoing renegotiation of a modern polity and culture. Reading a wide-ranging archive of English-language texts - from prison memoir to popular magazine, from high-brow literary fiction to boilerplate thriller, from the unrelentingly realistic to the mythically allegorical - Genres of Emergency traces the tension between crisis and continuity that these genres mediate. In addressing this tension, the authors of Emergency fiction take seriously the genres in which they write and use them to mobilize literary conventions as political interventions. More specifically, these novels use the conventions of realism, epic, allegory, and the thriller to reach back in time and across cultures and languages, invoking past iterations of these genres and histories and anticipating those to come. Combining literary criticism with cultural history, Genres of Emergency thus has implications for the study of literary genre, for the historical events that these genres recount, and for understanding the politics of literary form.

Thebook provides state-of-the-art, clear guidance as well as avaluable information source for busy professionals involved in thedesign or management of new and existing environments. The ways colour, light and contrast are used within builtenvironments are critical in determining how people interact withthe space, and how confident, safe, and secure they will feel whendoing so. They also have a major influence on a person’ssense of well-being and their ability to use the environmentindependently and without undue effort. Understanding how to use colour and contrast and how they areinfluenced by both natural and artificial lighting is vital for allthose involved in the design and management of the environments andspaces we all use. In recent years there has been a considerable amount of workundertaken to further our understanding of how colour, light andcontrast affect emotion and sensory abilities, and how they canassist or hinder people in their everyday lives. Other publications consider these issues individually but TheColour, Light and Contrast Manual: designing and managing inclusivebuilt environments draws knowledge and information together toproduce a unique, comprehensive and informative guide to how thethree elements can work together to improve the design andmanagement of environments for us all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a critical intervention into the archive of female identity; it reflects on the ways in which the Central and Eastern European female ideal was constructed, represented, and embodied in communist societies and on its transformation resulting from the political, economic, and social changes specific to the post-communist social and political transitions. During the communist period, the female ideal was constituted as a heroic mother and worker, both a revolutionary and a state bureaucrat, which were regarded as key elements in the processes of industrial development and production. She was portrayed as physically strong and with rugged rather than with feminized attributes. After the post-communist regime collapsed, the female ideal’s traits changed and instead took on the feminine attributes that are familiar in the West’s consumer-oriented societies. Each chapter in the volume explores different aspects of these changes and links those changes to national security, nationalism, and relations with Western societies, while focusing on a variety of genres of expression such as films, music, plays, literature, press reports, television talk shows, and ethnographic research. The topics explored in this volume open a space for discussion and reflection about how radical social change intimately affected the lives and identities of women, and their positions in society, resulting in various policy initiatives involving women’s social and political roles. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of gender studies, comparative politics, Eastern European studies, and cultural studies.
