In recent years the Saudi government has felt increasing international pressure to offer greater roles for women in society. Implicit in these calls for reform, however, is an assumption that the only "real" society is male society. Little consideration has been given to the rapidly evolving activities within women's spaces. This book joins young urban women in their daily lives—in the workplace, on the female university campus, at the mall—to show how these women are transforming Saudi cities from within and creating their own urban, professional, consumerist lifestyles. As young Saudi women are emerging as an increasingly visible social group, they are shaping new social norms. Their shared urban spaces offer women the opportunity to shed certain constraints and imagine themselves in new roles. But to feel included in this peer group, women must adhere to new constraints: to be sophisticated, fashionable, feminine, and modern. The position of "other" women—poor, rural, or non-Saudi women—is increasingly marginalized. While young urban women may embody the image of a "reformed" Saudi nation, the reform project ultimately remains incomplete, drawing new hierarchies and lines of exclusion among women.

Les premières s’attaquent à un problème qui relève de l’espace privé – les violences domestiques, dont les victimes sont le plus souvent des femmes. Les secondes visent à assurer la sécurité dans l’espace public et se veulent neutres du point de vue du genre. Or, cette dichotomie semble reproduire, sans la remettre en question, l’assimilation de l’espace public aux hommes et de l’espace privé aux femmes. Non seulement elle marginalise la question des femmes victimes de violences domestiques (en en faisant une affaire de femmes), mais elle occulte les expériences que les femmes font des violences dans les espaces publics et leurs conséquences en termes de mobilité. De fait, un grand nombre de femmes disent avoir peur de déambuler dans les espaces publics après une certaine heure. Elles adoptent soit des tactiques d’exclusion, obéissant à un couvre-feu virtuel, soit des tactiques d’évitement. De telles pratiques suggèrent que, sans être des lieux purement et simplement interdits, les espaces publics restent d’un accès retreint pour les femmes.

In less than two decades, seeking partners through commercial intermediaries went from being a marginal and stigmatized practice to being a common activity. How can we explain this rapid change and what does it tell us about the changing nature of love and sexuality? In contrast to those who praise online dating as a democratization of love and those who condemn it as a commodification of intimacy, this book tells a different story about how and why online dating became big. The key to understanding the growing prevalence of digital dating lies in what Marie Bergström calls “the privatization of intimacy.” Online dating takes courtship from the public to the private sphere and makes it a domestic and individual practice. Unlike courtship in traditional settings such as school, work, and gatherings of family and friends, online dating makes a clear distinction between social and sexual sociability and renders dating much more discrete. Apparently banal, this privatizing feature is fundamental for understanding both the success and the nature of digital matchmaking. Bergström also sheds light on the persisting inequalities of intimate life, showing that online dating is neither free nor fair: it has its winners and losers and it differs significantly according to gender, age and social class. Drawing on a wide range of empirical material, this book challenges what we think we know about online dating and gives us a new understanding of who, why, and how people go online to seek sex and love.
