The focus is a transnational, polyphonic writing project entitled ‘Rwanda: écrire par devoir de mémoire’ (Rwanda: Writing by Duty of Memory), undertaken in 1998 by a group of nine African authors. This work emphasizes the Afropolitan cultural frame in which the texts were conceived and written. Instead of using Western and Eurocentric tropes, this volume looks at a so-called ‘minority trauma’: an African conflict situated in a collectivist society and written about by writers from African origin. This approach enables a more situated study, in which it becomes possible to draw out the local notions of ubuntu, oral testimonies, mourning traditions, healing and storytelling strategies, and the presence of the ‘invisible’. As these texts are written in French and to date not all of them have been translated into English, most academic research has been done in French. This book thus assists in connecting English-speaking readers not only to a set of texts written in French with significant literary and cultural value, but also to francophone trauma studies research.

Deceptive mimicry -- the manipulation of individual or group identity -- includes passing off as a different individual, as a member of a group to which one does not belong, or, for a group, to 'sign' its action as another group. Mimicry exploits the reputation of the model it mimics to avoid capture (flight), to strike undetected at the enemy (fight), or to hide behind or besmirch the reputation of the model group ('false flag' operations). These tactics have previously been described anecdotally, mixed in with other ruses de guerre, but the authors show that mimicry is a distinct form of deception with its own logic and particularly consequential effects on those involved. The book offers a theory and game-theoretic model of mimicry, an overview of its use through history, and a deep empirical exploration of its modern manifestations through several case studies by leading social scientists. Cette mémoire est pourtant fort complexe, car elle passe par plusieurs voix. Ces voix peuvent simplement se juxtaposer ou se compléter, mais elles peuvent, aussi, entrer radicalement en conflit les unes avec les autres, s'accusant mutuellement et récusant les arguments, les évidences et les logiques de l'autre. Il convient de se rappeler qu'un génocide, en tant que crime d'éradication, cherche à faire disparaître radicalement le groupe ciblé et repose sur l'effacement de toutes les traces de l'existence de l'autre. La mise en oeuvre de ces disparitions s'organise à plusieurs niveaux : physique (assassinat de masse des membres dudit groupe), existentiel (destruction des registres de l'état civil, des documents baptismaux, des photos, etc.), culturel (démolition ou récupération des monuments, autodafés, massacre des porteurs de la culture, etc.) et symbolique, avec l'effacement de la mort et de ses causes véritables par la falsification du projet génocidaire. En ce sens, le génocide relève d'un processus de destruction qui s'inscrit dans le temps : destruction dans le présent du passé, en vue d'empêcher tout avenir. Au meurtre physique des victimes se superpose le meurtre du symbolique par son impossible transmission.
