Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has captured the worldwide attention of biologists, conservationists, and ecologists and has been the setting for extensive investigation over the past 30 years. Roughly 40,000 ecotourists visit the Cloud Forest each year, and it is often considered the archetypal high-altitude rain forest. This volume brings together some of the most prominent researchers of the region to provide a broad introduction to the biology of the Monteverde, and cloud forests in general. Collecting and synthesizing vital information about the ecosystem and its biota, the book also examines the positive and negative effects of human activity on both the forest and the surrounding communities. Ecologists, tropical biologists, and natural historians will find this volume an indispensable resource, as will all those who are fascinated by the magnificent wonders of the tropical forests.

Book excerpt: Aquatic insects species in North Europe are found in ten different orders, representing a wide variety of form and life styles. Most diverse are the dipterans, the two-winged flies and midges, including among others the notorious blood-sucking pests of the boreal and subarctic regions. Other diverse orders are chiefly the beetles and caddisflies, including several hundreds of species occupying most of the available freshwater environments. Besides the aquatic beetles and bugs, insects classified as aquatic normally develop in water, whereas the adult flying forms are terrestrial. Swarming mayflies and hovering libellulas are well-known characteristics of lake and stream shores. Insect larvae are nowadays widely used in environmental monitoring, with actual species composition at a locality providing reliable evidence on the impacts of acidification and pollution. Environmental applications have engaged many people in the identification of aquatic insect larvae, on scientific, commercial, or governmental basis. However, these activities have been hampered by a general lack of an up-to-date standard work providing modern nomenclature and reliable identification keys including all known taxa from the region. This CD-ROM formatâ??which contains both Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the printed editions of Aquatic Insects of North Europe, published in 1996 and 1997 with a total of 714 pages and 3426 line drawingsâ??is designed to fill a taxonomic knowledge gap. The information provided focuses geographically on the Nordic Countriesâ??Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Aquatic Insects of North Europe is a rich source of information on natural history, morphology, faunistics, classification, and identification.

Book excerpt: Until relatively recently the valuable tropical montane cloud forests (hereaf ter usually referred to as TMCFs) of the world had scarcely come under the assaults experienced by the downslope montane and lowland forests. TMCFs are not hospitable environments for human occupation, and their remoteness (except in places near Andean high mountain settlements and in the Ethiopian Highlands) and difficult terrain have given them de facto protection. The ad jacent upper montane rain forests have indeed been under assault for timber, fuelwood, and for conversion to grazing and agriculture for many decades, even centuries in the Andes, but true cloud forest has only come under ex ploitation as these lower elevational resources have disappeared. They have also been "nibbled" at from above where there have been alpine grasslands under grazing pressure. Increasingly now, however, these cloud forest eco systems are being fragmented, reduced, and disturbed at an alarming rate. It is now becoming recognized that steps must be taken rapidly to increase our understanding of TMCF and to achieve their conservation, because: their water-capture function is extremely important to society; • their species endemism is high; they serve as refugia for endangered species being marginalized in these environments by increasingly transformed lower elevation ecosystems; they are relatively little studied; yet, their value to science is extremely high; they have low resilience to disturbance; vii viii Preface and many other reasons, which will be discussed subsequently in this publi cation.

Book excerpt: One of the highest concentrations of insect species in the world is found in Mesoamerica and the Isthmus of Panama. Yet visitors and others interested in this abudant region have until now been frustrated by the lack of literature useful for identifying and learning about this incredible array of insect life. This volume provides a wealth of information on many of the most common groups of these neotropical insects. Written for students and interested general readers as well as entomologists, the book aims to inspire increased interest in the study and conservation of this rich yet fragile biological region. The authors note that the volume was prepared with a special sense of urgency since the destruction of tropical forests has accelerated to such alarming proportions that today the Pacific lowland forests of Panama have been virtually extirpated, along with many of their native insect species, and other regions are threatened. Thus the gathering and publishing of information about this fragile and priceless natural heritage is an urgent task. The 42 chapters cover 20 insect orders and review the geology and biogeography of the area. The contributors offer a wide variety of viewpoints, ranging from natural history, to detailed ecological studies, to taxonomic treatments. The book introduces the majority of the smaller insect orders as well as diverse groups within larger orders. It is illustrated with hundreds of line drawings, distribution maps, and black-and-white photographs. A set of abstracts in English and Spanish is provided at the end of the book. This is the first work to focus on the insect fauna of Mesoamerica and Panama since Biologia Centrali-Americana, an exclusively systematic work published nearly 100 years ago.

Raven, Director, Missouri Botanical Garden "An essential resource for anyone interested in tropical biology. . . . It can be used both as an encyclopedia—a source of facts on specific organisms—and as a source of ideas and generalizations about tropical ecology."—Alan P. Smith, Ecology
