Book excerpt: Most optical pulses, even at the 10-femtosecond timescale, consist of several oscillations of the electric field. By producing and amplifying an ultra-broadband continuum, single cycle (e 3 fs) or shorter optical pulses may be generated. This requires a very challenging pulse-compression with sub-femtosecond accuracy. Production of these single-cycle pulses will lead to new generations of experiments in the areas of coherent control of chemical excitations and reactions, 0.1-fs high-order harmonic (XUV) generation for probing of materials and fast processes, and selective 3-D micron-scale material removal and modification. We activated the first stage of a planned three-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) that would ultimately produce sub-3 fs pulses. Active control with a learning algorithm was implemented to optimize the continuum generated in an argon-filled capillary and to control and optimize the final compressed pulse temporal shape. A collaboration was initiated to coherently control the population of different states upon dissociation of Rb{sub 2}. Except for one final optic, a pulse compressor and diagnostics were constructed to produce and characterize pulses in the 5-fs range from the first OPA stage.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We numerically study the pulse compression approaches based on atomic or molecular gases in a hollow-core fiber. From the perspective of self-phase modulation (SPM), we give the extensive study of the SPM influence on a probe pulse with molecular phase modulation (MPM) effect. By comparing the two compression methods, we summarize their advantages and drawbacks to obtain the few-cycle pulses with micro- or millijoule energies. It is also shown that the double pump-probe approach can be used as a tunable dual-color source by adjusting the time delay between pump and probe pulses to proper values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To obtain the microjoule-level attosecond pulse energy required for performing all-attosecond experiments, the attosecond flux generated by the IFAST 10 TW system was still deficient by an order of magnitude. To this end, the laser system was upgraded to provide joule-level output energies while maintaining pulse compression to 15 fs, with a targeted peak power of 200 TW. This was accomplished by adding an additional Ti:sapphire amplifier to the existing 10 TW system and implementing a new pulse compression system to accommodate the higher pulse energy. Because this system operated at a 10 Hz repetition rate, stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP)--important for controlling attosecond pulse production--could not be achieved using traditional methods. Therefore, a new scheme was developed, demonstrating the first-ever control of CEP in a chirped-pulse amplifier (CPA) at low repetition rates. Finally, a new variation of optical gating was proposed as a way to improve the efficiency of the attosecond pulse generation process. This method was also predicted to allow for the generation of isolated attosecond pulses with longer driving laser pulses, as well as the extension of the highenergy photon cut-off of the XUV continuum.

Book excerpt: "A key technology for generating ultrafast, high-energy laser pulses is temporal compression through self-phase modulation in noble gases. Noble gases are ideal for high energy applications due to their high damage thresholds and flexibility through the gas species and pressure. Therefore, they have scaled nonlinear compression to the order of hundred millijoules pulse energy while maintaining high beam quality and average power. Further scaling is limited however, as the enormous pulse energies available from state-of-the-art ytterbium amplifier technology have surpassed the gases' ionization thresholds. Plasma effects encountered beyond the ionization threshold, especially plasma defocusing, degrade the output pulse and prevent scaling to higher energies. In this thesis, I will develop a method to overcome the gas ionization thresholds and scale spectral broadening methods to higher energy - divided-pulse nonlinear compression. In divided-pulse nonlinear compression, a high-energy pulse is divided into multiple low-energy pulses that are spectrally broadened. The low-energy pulses have peak intensity below the gas's ionization threshold and are able to pass through the spectral broadening stage with high efficiency, even when the single, high-energy pulse cannot. After spectral broadening, the low-energy pulses are recombined back into a high-energy pulse and compressed to a short duration. In this thesis, I will demonstrate both that the method overcomes the gas ionization limitations and that the recombination and compression steps can be implemented with high efficiency, leading to high-quality, high-energy, well-compressed pulses. In the course of this demonstration, I had to develop other tools that will be beneficial for future high-energy temporal compression systems. I improved existing pulse propagation equations that model the nonlinear spectral broadening processes in a hollow-core fiber and used the improved equations to quantify the detrimental effects of gas ionization. Alignment tolerances for the pulse division and recombination steps are tight, so I developed an analytic alignment tolerances model to quantify the effects of alignment errors and identified a useful compensator to loosen the tolerances. Finally, I also identified a new use for divided-pulse nonlinear compression that I will demonstrate, temporal contrast improvement, which rejects the prepulses and amplified spontaneous emission produced by many high-power laser amplifier systems."--Pages x-xi.

This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apparatus performs a method of generating one or more output laser pulses in a range of 2 to 6 microns. When a plurality of the output laser pulses are generated, a first output pulse has any selected wavelength within the range and a second output pulse is temporally closely spaced relative to the first output pulse and has a chosen wavelength differing from the selected wavelength. An oscillator laser cavity is provided with a tunable oscillator rod capable of generating initial laser pulses within a range of from 750 to 1000 nm, and a tuning element is coupled to the rod. A flashlamp is operable to pump the rod. For two pulse operation, the flashlamp has a given duration. A Q-switch provides the initial laser pulses upon operation of the tuning element and the flashlamp. A Raman device coupled to the rod shifts the wavelength of such initial laser pulse into the range of from 2 to 6 microns to form the output laser pulse having a wavelength within the range. For multiple pulses, a controller causes the Q-switch to provide first and second ones of the initial laser pulses, spaced by a time interval less than the given duration. Also, a selector coupled to the tuning element is operable within such duration to successively select the wavelength of the first output pulse and the chosen wavelength of the second initial pulse. The Raman device is responsive to each of the initial light pulses to generate radiation at first and second Stokes wavelengths, each of said the output laser pulses being radiation at the second Stokes wavelength.
