Some of the proposals directly use the angular-momentum-dominated beams (e.g. electron cooling of heavy ions), while others require the beam to be transformed into a flat beam (e.g. possible electron injectors for light sources and linear colliders). In this paper, we report our experimental study of an angular-momentum-dominated beam produced in a photoinjector, addressing the dependencies of angular momentum on initial conditions. We also briefly discuss the removal of angular momentum. The results of the experiment, carried out at the Fermilab/NICADD Photoinjector Laboratory, are found to be in good agreement with theoretical and numerical models.

Book excerpt: The transformation of a round, angular-momentum-dominated electron beam produced in a photoinjector into a flat beam using a transformer composed of three skew-quadrupoles [1] has been developed theoretically [2, 3] and experimentally [4]. In this paper, we present numerical and analytical studies of space-charge forces, and evaluate the corresponding limits on the ratio of vertical-to-horizontal emittances. We also investigate the sensitivities of flat-beam emittances on the quadrupole misalignments in each of the six degrees of freedom.

Book excerpt: Flat beams--beams with asymmetric transverse emittances--have important applications in novel light-source concepts and advanced-acceleration schemes and could possibly alleviate the need for damping rings in lepton colliders. Over the last decade, a flat beam generation technique based on the conversion of an angular-momentum-dominated beam was proposed and experimentally tested. In this paper we explore the production of compressed flat beams. We especially investigate and optimize the flat beam transformation for beams with substantial fractional energy spread. We use as a simulation example the photoinjector of Fermilab's Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator. The optimizations of the flat beam generation and compression at Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator were done via start-to-end numerical simulations for bunch charges of 3.2 nC, 1.0 nC, and 20 pC at ~37 MeV. The optimized emittances of flat beams with different bunch charges were found to be 0.25 [mu]m (emittance ratio is ~400), 0.13 [mu]m, 15 nm before compression, and 0.41 [mu]m, 0.20 [mu]m, 16 nm after full compression, respectively, with peak currents as high as 5.5 kA for a 3.2-nC flat beam. These parameters are consistent with requirements needed to excite wakefields in asymmetric dielectric-lined waveguides or produce significant photon flux using small-gap micro-undulators.

Book excerpt: The optimum photo-electron distribution from the cathode of an RF photoinjector producing a space charge dominated beam is a uniform distribution contained in an ellipsoid. For such a bunch distribution, the space charge forces are linear and the emittance growth induced by those forces is totally reversible and consequently can be compensated. With the appropriate tuning of the emittance compensation optics, the emittance, at the end of photoinjector beamline, for an ellipsoidal laser pulse, would only have two contributions, the cathode emittance and the RF emittance. For the peak currents of 50A and 100 A required from the SBand and L-Band RF gun photoinjectors discussed here, the RF emittance contribution is negligible. If such an ellipsoidal photo-electron distribution were available, the emittance at the end of the beamline could be reduced to the cathode emittance. Its value would be reduced by more than 40% from that obtained using cylindrical shape laser pulses. This potentially dramatic improvement warrants review of the challenges associated with the production of ellipsoidal photo-electrons. We assume the photo-electrons emission time to be short enough that the ellipsoidal electron pulse shape will come directly from the laser pulse. We shift the challenge to ellipsoidal laser pulse shaping. To expose limiting technical issues, we consider the generation of ellipsoidal laser pulse shape in terms of three different concepts.

Book excerpt: This dissertation will elucidate the design, construction, theory, and operation of the Next Generation Photoinjector (NGP). This photoinjector is comprised of the BNL/SLAC/UCLA 1.6 cell symmetrized S-band photocathode radio frequency (rf) electron gun and a single emittance-compensation solenoidal magnet. This photoinjector is a prototype for the Linear Coherent Light Source X-ray Free Electron Laser operating in the 1.5 {angstrom} range. Simulations indicate that this photoinjector is capable of producing a 1nC electron bunch with transverse normalized emittance less than 1 {pi} mm mrad were the cathode is illuminated with a 10 psec longitudinal flat top pulse. Using a Gaussian longitudinal laser profile with a full width half maximum (FWHM) of 10 psec, simulation indicates that the NGP is capable of producing a normalized rms emittance of 2.50 {pi} mm mrad at 1 nC. Using the removable cathode plate we have studied the quantum efficiency (QE) of both copper and magnesium photo-cathodes. The Cu QE was found to be 4.5 x 10{sup -5} with a 25% variation in the QE across the emitting surface of the cathode, while supporting a field gradient of 125 MV/m. At low charge, the transverse normalized rms emittance, {epsilon}{sub n, rms}, produced by the NGP is {epsilon}{sub n, rms} = 1.2 {pi} mm mrad for Q{sub T} = 0.3 nC. The 95% electron beam bunch length was measured to 10.9 psec. The emittance due to the finite magnetic field at the cathode has been studied. The scaling of this magnetic emittance term as a function of cathode magnetic field was found to be 0.01 {pi} mm mrad per Gauss. The 1.6 cell rf gun has been designed to reduce the dipole field asymmetry of the longitudinal accelerating field. Low level rf measurements show that this has in fact been accomplished, with an order of magnitude decrease in the dipole field. High power beam studies also show that the dipole field has been decreased. An upper limit of the intrinsic non-reducible thermal emittance of a photocathode under high field gradient was found to be {epsilon}{sub n, rms} = 0.8 {pi} mm mrad. Agreement is found between the theoretical calculation of the thermal emittance, {epsilon}{sub 0} = 0.62 {pi} mm mrad, and the experimental results, after taking into account all of the emittance contribution terms. The 1 nC emittance was found to be {epsilon}{sub n, rms} = 4.75 {pi} mm mrad with a 95% electron beam bunch length of 14.7 psec. Systematic bunch length measurements showed electron beam bunch lengthening due the electron beam charge. They will show that the discrepancy between measurement and simulation is due to three effects. The major effect is due to the variation of the QE in the photo-emitting area of the Cu cathode. Also, space charge emittance blowup in the transport line will be shown to be a significant effect because the electron beam is still in the space charge dominated regime. The last effect, which has been observed experimentally, is the electron bunch lengthening as a function of total electron bunch charge.

Book excerpt: The generation of a flat electron beam directly from a photoinjector is an attractive alternative to the electron damping ring as envisioned for linear colliders. It also has potential applications to light sources such as the generation of ultrashort x-ray pulses or Smith-Purcell free electron lasers. In this paper, we report on the experimental generation of a flat beam with a measured transverse emittance ratio of 100 {+-} 20 for a bunch charge of {approx_equal} 0.5 nC. The experimental data, obtained at the Fermilab/NICADD Photoinjector Laboratory, are compared with numerical simulations and the expected scaling laws. Possible improvement of the experiment along with application for such a flat beams are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation will illustrate the design, theory and fabrication of a new generation of radiofrequency (RF) photoinjector aimed at obtaining signicant improvements in beam brightness, through an innovative accelerating cavity design, with minimized RF breakdown rates and a novel fabrication technique. The UCLA 1.4 cell RF photoinjector has been inspired by the SPARC (LNF-INFN, Italy) 1.6 cell RF electron gun currently operating in the Pegasus beamline. Using the clamping technique with the INFN proprietary-design gaskets, the fabrication for the 1.4 cell photoinjector the INFN can be completed without any brazing process. Careful rounding of all the inside surfaces allows better management of the pulsed heating temperature rise that largely contributes to the rf breakdown limits of older generations of high gradient electron guns. Finally, the clamping technique and innovative gasket design offers a lower risk assembly and lower fabrication costs. The UCLA 1.4 cell rf electron gun has been designed to operate at a 120MV/m gradient and an optimal injection phase of 70 degrees in order to increase the extraction field experienced by the electrons at photo-emission by a factor of 1.9 compared to the one in the standard 1.6 cell design running at the same peak eld. The maximum achievable beam brightness in a RF photogun depends on the extraction eld with a scaling which diers for the various regimes of operation (cigar, pancake, blowout). Nevertheless, for all cases, improving the extraction field improves the beam brightness at least linearly regardless of operating regime. From the electromagnetic point of view the gun presents a large mode separation, an extra pumping port for dipole moment compensation, a racetrack full cell geometry for quadrupole moment compensation, strongly rounded elliptical iris and coupler for minimal pulsed heating. The electron gun has also been designed to be compatible with several cutting edge experiments. The inclusion of oblique incidence laser ports allows for short focal length laser illumination on the cathode to generate ultra-low emittance bunches as demonstrated in recent experiments. The new photoinjector is also compatible with a load-lock chamber to test advanced photocathodes, such as alkali antimonide cathodes. These promising materials have yet to be tested in high gradient accelerating cavities due to the lack of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) storage system that is capable of loading cathodes into the injector without breaking vacuum. The clamping technique has proven useful in the assembly of accelerating cavities. In the last chapter of this thesis, we will also discuss the design and use of the clamping method in the realization of an X-band deflecting cavity that will play a role in the future ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments at UCLA. The goal of the new deflecting cavity is to develop an innovative, inexpensive and low energy UED system that provides short bunches and others improvements in the temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction measurements.

Such beams, known as electron vortex beams, are theoretically able to transfer their orbital angular momenta to matter, causing the matter to rotate. Nanoparticles in an aqueous solution were observed with an electron vortex beam to detect the transfer of orbital angular momentum in a low-friction environment. Observing the transfer of orbital angular momentum to particles in solution is difficult due to the necessity of imaging the particles through a liquid and the random movement of particles in the solution. Thus, orbital angular momentum transfer to matter could not conclusively be observed in this environment. Initial data, observations, and a discussion of ways to eliminate particle movement, increase image quality, and reduce uncertainty of particle movement while observing orbital angular momentum transfer are discussed. Research was conducted in the Material Science Institute at the University of Oregon under the advisement of B. McMorran.
