Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical vortices are singularities in phase fronts of laser beams. They are characterized by a dark core due to phase dislocation emanating from the zero in field. A "charge" can be associated with the dislocation, the sign of which changes depending on whether the phase increases or decreases by an integer multiple of 2[pi] upon circling the zero. The object of the research presented in this dissertation was to explore ways for triggering or exploding a higher order vortex and to examine arithmetic properties of optical vortices using analytical and numerical methods. Diffractive optical masks can be produced to generate complex array patterns. Horizontal and vertical shift of complex patterns can be done with great ease. Rouche's theorem was used for analyzing and then providing a means for dramatically modifying a vortex structure for vortex-order conversion. We also report an efficient method for destroying an optical vortex. We have shown how fabricating masks for observing vortices in the complex space (off the real plane) one can super resolve submicron sized features. The results presented in the thesis offer us a better understanding of dynamics of exploded vortices which may result in application in optical switching, optical data storage, manipulation of micro particles and free-space data communication.

It presents an overview of, and the latest research on this novel type of optical beam, which is a hot topic in the domain of modern optics, especially in optical communication and beam manipulation. Summarizing the fundamentals of optical vortices, it discusses their characterization and propagation, and focuses on the generation of vortices such as vortex-arrays, and the detection of vortices and their orbital angular momentum state. It also comprehensively examines the adaptive compensation systems, as well as vector beams and polarization vortices with anisotropic polarization distributions. Further it provides a detailed description of perfect vortices with beam diameters independent of the angular momentum. This book is intended for researchers, engineers and graduate students working in the field of optics and laser beam applications.

Book excerpt: This book deals with applications in several areas of science and technology that make use of light which carries orbital angular momentum. In most practical scenarios, the angular momentum can be decomposed into two independent contributions: the spin angular momentum and the orbital angular momentum. The orbital contribution affords a fundamentally new degree of freedom, with fascinating and wide-spread applications. Unlike spin angular momentum, which is associated with the polarization of light, the orbital angular momentum arises as a consequence of the spatial distribution of the intensity and phase of an optical field, even down to the single photon limit. Researchers have begun to appreciate its implications for our understanding of the ways in which light and matter can interact, and its practical potential in different areas of science and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Maxwell theory, we have known that electromagnetic radiation carries not only energy but also momentum. The momentum of the light includes both the linear momentum and angular momentum, which has a spin angular momentum associated with polarization and an orbital part associated with spatial phase distribution. While the angular momentum is along the propagation direction mostly, it is still worth exploring the transverse orbital angular momentum.Light is twisted around the propagation axis in optical vortices, which is characterized by a helical wavefront and a zero intensity in the center. The optical vortices with transverse orbital angular momentum means the spiral phase is applied to the spatiotemporal plane instead of the transverse plane. The degree of circulation could be controlled by given a specific topological charge. We are going to present how to generate a spatiotemporal optical vortex with a controllable intrinsic transverse orbital angular momentum, as well as the phase measurement of the vortices beam. The experiment is also completed and the result matches the theory very well. On this basis, we will introduce the three-dimension measurement of the wave packet. The reconstruction intensity profile will present in this work. The propagarion of ST vortices in the 4f system is also studied. The unique property of optical vortices with transverse angular orbital momentum attracting us to explore more applications in the future, such as high speed optical communications, optical tweezer, and manipulate nanostructures on ultrafast time scales. The result of this work encourages us to move to the next step.

Book excerpt: This book deals with theoretical bases of the modern optics division concerned with coherent light fields with singularities characterized by phase uncertainty. Singular light fields include laser vortex beams or beams that carry orbital angular momentum. Laser vortex beams that have been introduced in optics in recent years are discussed in detail. Among them, of special notice are families of asymmetric laser vortex beams that, while being devoid of radial symmetry, remain unchanged upon propagation. What makes the laser vortex beams especially interesting is the ability to preserve their structure while propagating in a scattering medium or through a turbulent atmosphere. The orbital angular momentum is an extra degree of freedom of laser vortices because beams with different topological charge can be utilized as independent channels for data transmission in wireless communications. Laser vortex beams are generated from conventional Gaussian beams using liquid crystal light modulators, which are now readily available at any optical laboratory. Provide a framework for the comparative analysis of the efficiency of different vortex beams for micromanipulation. Includes detailed illustrations, enabling the vortex structure to be easily understood even by non-experts. Presents detailed descriptions of more than a dozen most popular types of vortex laser beams. Explores how optical vortices have been used in many practical applications including conventional and quantum wireless communications, micromanipulation, optical measurements with super-resolution, spiral interferometry, microscopy, and atom cooling. Presents in a systematic and detailed form many analytical and numerical results for the propagation vortex optical beams (chiefly in the linear propagation regime).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to realize the space-time manipulation of spatiotemporal vortices by controlling their phase. Specifically, lens systems can provide the spatial phase, thereby changing the orientation of the optical vortex orbital angular momentum by adding torque. The dispersion effect can realize the precise control of the wave packet in the temporal domain. Adjusting the state of the laser to a partial coherent state can explore the effect of randomness on vortices. We also analyzed how the physical parameters of the vortex evolve under variation of each of these conditions, which gives us a general heuristic framework for understanding STOVs phenomena.
