Book excerpt: Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have experienced a tremendous increase in installed capacity in the past decade. Although solar PV power is environmentally friendly and can be used to extend the life of fossil fuel reserves, it is of an intermittent nature. Through nine chapters, this book provides an understanding of solar PV systems’ power output intermittency and its impacts on power systems. The first part of the book highlights the source of the variability of both solar irradiation and PV systems’ output, while the second highlights the impact of factors such as temperature and dust on PV systems’ output variability through case studies. The third part highlights the impacts of PV systems’ output variability of the design and operation of power systems. This book will appeal to students, researchers, operators, engineers, designers, and policymakers working on solar PV or electric power systems design, planning, or operation.

Book excerpt: Iraqis experience interruptions of the public electricity supply of up to 18¬†hours a day. In response, private entrepreneurs and the Local Provincial Councils (LPCs) have installed an estimated 55,000,Äì80,000 diesel generators, each rated typically between 100 and 500 kVA. The generators supply neighbourhoods through small, isolated distribution networks to operate lighting, fans and small appliances when power is not available from the public supply. A single radial live conductor connects each customer to the generator and payment for the electricity is based on a monthly charge per ampere. The operation and regulation of the neighbourhood diesel generator networks was reviewed through a comprehensive literature survey, site visits and interviews conducted with local operators and assemblers of the generator sets. The electricity is expensive, the generators can only supply small loads, have considerable environmental impact and the unusual single wire distribution practice is potentially hazardous. However, the use of the generators is likely to continue in the absence of any alternative electricity supply. The diesels and networks are poorly regulated and there is scope to enforce existing standards and develop a new standard to address the hazards of the connection practice. The chapter goes on to assess the possibilities of using small photovoltaic systems for power generation in Iraq.

Book excerpt: With increasing apprehensions over global warming and environmental issues, the need to develop renewable energy is becoming more critical to secure our future energy needs. Solar energy is the most abundant source of energy and is easily accessible. However, making efficient use of solar energy is not an easy task. Energy materials, especially in their micro and nanoscale, have an excellent potential for absorbing, transferring and storing solar energy when they are dispersed in an aqueous medium. The increased surface area to volume ratio of energy materials at nanoscale exhibits extraordinary characteristics. Various applications relevant to heat transfer, energy conversion, and storage have increasingly used nanoparticles due to their ability to absorb, store, and carry heat. However, successful deployment of materials in energy harvesting and storage applications must also consider some of the very fundamental challenges, including but not limited to sedimentation, entrainment, stability, and life of these potential energy materials. Additionally, there are novel applications of newly developed specialized materials in solar energy capture, transport and storage. This topic is to circumscribe all challenges, innovative applications and numerical studies in materials for energy capture, transfer, and storage to have a safe future in terms of solar energy utilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities for achieving a net-zero energy transition in Africa. With a focus on policy, technology, financing, and socio-political factors, the book presents four potential scenarios for a sustainable energy transition in the continent. The scenarios presented highlight the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability and social development. While foreign investments in renewable energy could be beneficial, they must be carefully monitored and regulated to prevent exploitation and ensure accountability. The book also emphasizes the need for collaboration and a calculated transition to ensure that all stakeholders are involved in the process. Additionally, the challenges of achieving self-sufficiency and export-free energy are discussed, with the importance of setting limitations and regulations to prevent a vicious cycle of poverty and dependency on foreign aid. With a deep understanding of Africa's environmental, socio-political, and socio-cultural complexities, “Africa's Path to Net-Zero” offers valuable insights for policymakers, investors, and anyone interested in promoting a sustainable energy future for the continent.

Book excerpt: The world's deserts are sufficiently large that, in theory, covering a fraction of their landmass with PV systems could generate many times the current primary global energy supply. In three parts, this study details the background and concept of VLS-PV, maps out a development path towards the realization of VLS-PV systems and provides firm recommendations to achieve long-term targets. This represents the first study to provide a concrete set of answers to the questions that must be addressed in order to secure and exploit the potential for VLS-PV technology and its global benefits.

Why don’t we drive hydrogen cars that are powered by the sun and rain? The availability of cheap green energy is increasing. . We have solar and wind power, and even energy derived from ambient heat. At the same time we have very diverse energy needs: fuel for cars, electricity, heat for buildings, feedstock for industrial processes, to name just a few. Energy supply and demand do not match, which means that we have to match resources, storage and consumption in an intelligent way. Solar Power to the People casts a thoughtful vision on sustainable energy. We have to bring the power of the sun to the people. That is what sustainable energy and water is all about. The authors believe we have to act quickly. The matter is urgent.
