The curve r is assumed to be the union of s + 1 nonintersecting simple smooth closed contours rOo r •. . . • rs which form the positively l oriented boundary of a finitely connected bounded domain in t. Our main requirement on the symbol W is that on each contour rj the function W is the restriction of a rational matrix function Wj which does not have poles and zeros on rj and at infinity. Using the realization theorem from system theory (see. e. g . • [1]. Chapter 2) the rational matrix function Wj (which differs from contour to contour) may be written in the form 1 (0. 1) W . (A) = I + C. (A - A. f B. A E r· J J J J J where Aj is a square matrix of size nj x n• say. B and C are j j j matrices of sizes n. x m and m x n . • respectively. and the matrices A. Book excerpt: At almost all academic institutions worldwide, complex variables and analytic functions are utilized in courses on applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and other related subjects. For most students, formulas alone do not provide a sufficient introduction to this widely taught material, yet illustrations of functions are sparse in current books on the topic. This is the first primary introductory textbook on complex variables and analytic functions to make extensive use of functional illustrations. Aiming to reach undergraduate students entering the world of complex variables and analytic functions, this book utilizes graphics to visually build on familiar cases and illustrate how these same functions extend beyond the real axis. It covers several important topics that are omitted in nearly all recent texts, including techniques for analytic continuation and discussions of elliptic functions and of Wiener–Hopf methods. It also presents current advances in research, highlighting the subject’s active and fascinating frontier. The primary audience for this textbook is undergraduate students taking an introductory course on complex variables and analytic functions. It is also geared toward graduate students taking a second semester course on these topics, engineers and physicists who use complex variables in their work, and students and researchers at any level who want a reference book on the subject.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected, peer-reviewed papers from the "Modern Methods, Problems and Applications of Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis VIII" (OTHA 2018) conference, which was held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in April 2018. The book covers a diverse range of topics in advanced mathematics, including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, function theory, differential equations and fractional analysis – all fields that have been intensively developed in recent decades. Direct and inverse problems arising in mathematical physics are studied and new methods for solving them are presented. Complex multiparameter objects that require the involvement of operators with variable parameters and functional spaces, with fractional and even variable exponents, make these approaches all the more relevant. Given its scope, the book will especially benefit researchers with an interest in new trends in harmonic analysis and operator theory, though it will also appeal to graduate students seeking new and intriguing topics for further investigation.

Book excerpt: This book offers a presentation of some new trends in operator theory and operator algebras, with a view to their applications. It consists of separate papers written by some of the leading practitioners in the field. The content is put together by the three editors in a way that should help students and working mathematicians in other parts of the mathematical sciences gain insight into an important part of modern mathematics and its applications. While different specialist authors are outlining new results in this book, the presentations have been made user friendly with the aid of tutorial material. In fact, each paper contains three things: a friendly introduction with motivation, tutorial material, and new research. The authors have strived to make their results relevant to the rest of mathematics. A list of topics discussed in the book includes wavelets, frames and their applications, quantum dynamics, multivariable operator theory, $C*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras. Some longer papers present recent advances on particular, long-standing problems such as extensions and dilations, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, and diagonals of self-adjoint operators.

Book excerpt: This book contains a derivation of the subset of stabilizing controllers for analog and digital linear time-invariant multivariable feedback control systems that insure stable system errors and stable controller outputs for persistent deterministic reference inputs that are trackable and for persistent deterministic disturbance inputs that are rejectable. For this subset of stabilizing controllers, the Wiener-Hopf methodology is then employed to obtain the optimal controller for which a quadratic performance measure is minimized. This is done for the completely general standard configuration and methods that enable the trading off of optimality for an improved stability margin and/or reduced sensitivity to plant model uncertainty are described. New and novel results on the optimal design of decoupled (non-interacting) systems are also presented. The results are applied in two examples: the one- and three-degree-of-freedom configurations. These demonstrate that the standard configuration is one encompassing all possible feedback configurations. Each chapter is completed by a group of worked examples, which reveal additional insights and extensions of the theory presented in the chapter. Three of the examples illustrate the application of the theory to two physical cases: the depth and pitch control of a submarine and the control of a Rosenbrock process. In the latter case, designs with and without decoupling are compared. This book provides researchers and graduate students working in feedback control with a valuable reference for Wiener–Hopf theory of multivariable design. Basic knowledge of linear systems and matrix theory is required.

Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Boundary Elements held at the University of Stuttgart, Germany from August 31st to September 4th, 1987, which was organized in co-operation with the Computational Mechanics Institute and GAMM (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics). This Conference, as the previous ones, aimed to review the latest developments in technique and theory and point out new advanced future trends. The emphasis of the meeting was on the engineering advances versus mathematical formulations, in an effort to consolidate the basis of many new applications. Recently engineers have proposed different techniques to solve non-linear and time dependent problems and many of these formulations needed a better mathematical understanding. Furthermore, new approximate formulations have been proposed for boundary elements which appeared to work in engineering practice, but did not have a proper theoretical background. The Conference also discussed the engineering applications of the method and concentrated on a link between BEM practitioners, industrial users and researchers working on the latest development of the method. The editors would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Ms. Liz Newman and Mr. H. Schmitz for their unstinting work in the preparation of the Conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has a dual purpose. The first is to expose a general methodology to solve problems of electromagnetism in geometries constituted of angular regions. The second is to bring the solutions of some canonical problems of fundamental importance in modern electromagnetic engineering with the use of the Wiener-Hopf technique. In particular, the general mathematical methodology is very ingenious and original. It is based on sophisticated and attractive procedures exploiting simple and advanced properties of analytical functions. Once the reader has acquired the methodology, she/he can easily obtain the solution of the canonical problems reported in the book. The book can be appealing also to readers who are not directly interested in the detailed mathematical methodology and/ or in electromagnetics. In fact the same methodology can be extended to acoustics and elasticity problems. Moreover, the proposed practical problems with their solutions constitute a list of reference solutions and can be of interests in engineering production in the field of radio propagations, electromagnetic compatibility and radar technologies.
