Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 4 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of basic and applied astronautics. This book deals with one of the more practical aspects of artificial satellites, measurement of the Doppler effect. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the Doppler effect of Earth-circling satellites. This text then explores the possibility of the existence of intelligent beings other than man. Other chapters consider the historical development of multistage rockets and space carrier vehicles and explain the concepts and approaches to manned orbital flight. This book discusses as well the problems of bringing spacecraft safely through planetary atmospheres and onto the surface. The final chapter deals with radioactive elements as energy sources for spacecraft propulsion in orbital transfer and for travel between the worlds of the Solar System. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, astronomers, chemists, geologists, and geochemists.

Book Synopsis Ein Beitrag Zur Theorie Der Stufenraketan (A Contribution to the Theory of Multistage Rockets). by : Werner Schulz
Download or read book Ein Beitrag Zur Theorie Der Stufenraketan (A Contribution to the Theory of Multistage Rockets). written by Werner Schulz and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of papers dealing with the optimisation of multi-stage rockets is presented first. These papers contain investigations, in terms of suitable non-dimensional parameters, about the dependence of the performance of rockets on the mass ratios of various components of the structure, the payload, the thrust, and the specific impulse. Then a condition is derived for the most favourable instant at which, for a given trajectory, the transition from one stage of a multi-stage rocket to the next one occurs. If each stage of a multi-stage rocket is ignited at the very moment the preceding stage is burnt out, and if the mass of the burnt-out stage is shed simultaneously from the rest of the rocket, the propellant would have to be distributed over the various stages in such a way that the ratio of the rocket acceleration over the mass flow at cut-off prior to shedding equals the same ratio at ignition of the next stage after shedding, in order to obtain the maximum cut-off velocity of the last stage. In order to achieve a ceiling of the trajectory as high as possible or a range as large as possible, the most favourable time is generally lagging slightly behind that for the maximum cut-off velocity. Book excerpt: This book describes a new type of rocket science needed to create low-cost, reliable, responsive space transportation. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the issues explored within this book. The text is beyond the current state-of-the-art engineering of modern launch vehicles, going into a scientific investigation that opens the door to true design optimization. The purpose of this work is to enable the reader to understand how low-cost space transportation is practical, and why it has been so hard to achieve.
