Book Synopsis 41 Rules of Pronunciation of English Words by : Ram Nivas Kumar
Download or read book 41 Rules of Pronunciation of English Words written by Ram Nivas Kumar and published by Ram Nivas Kumar. This book was released on with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often see that people in India and some other regions speak in their way others fail to understand or hardly come to the sense of the speech. Why is this? The reason behind is that there is a lack of uniformity in pronunciation of their words. Well, one is not free to speak one’s own pronunciation. There must be uniformity in the matter of pronunciation of English words at least in a certain region. Keeping this in view, I made consistent efforts for several years to collect the rules concerned to add some uniformity to the subject. And based on the depth study of advanced dictionaries of international fame, I found out 41 rules of pronunciation which I assembled all them and composed of this book. Well, knowledge of English is regarded as an index of education, and the ability to speak English correctly is regarded as an index of good schooling. Without knowledge of English, the education of a literate person may seem to be interrogated. Now learning English is an ever-growing demand. And speaking English correctly is a social requirement as well. While we speak of spoken English, we are afraid of the correct pronunciation of the words coming to our tongue. To help readers learn pronunciation of English words, I made an intensive research; went through lots of dictionaries of international fame, found out some general rules, assembled all them and asked one to follow (illustrative not exhaustive). First, I would like to make it clear that sound and pronunciation are not the same things. Both are somewhat different things. The sound of a particular word depends on our lung, tongue, larynx and pharynx. It also depends upon climatic condition and geographical spheres. While human mechanism is capable of producing many sounds of a single word, the pronunciation of a particular word is fixed for all and included in almost all dictionaries of international fame. There exists no single form of pronunciation which alone can be regarded as correct. The pronunciation fixed by Prof. R. K. Bansal of the University of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad and Prof. A. C. Gimson of the University of London may differ from that of Collins Dictionary (Primitive/pristine). However, some general rules have been fixed for better learning. Table of Contents 1. Preface 2. Foreword 3. Introduction 4. A Piece of Research Work 5. Speak with Correct Pronunciation 6. Usefulness of Correct Pronunciation 7. English Sound and Spelling 8. Rules of Pronunciation (Rules 1-41) 9. Tips to Pronounce a Word Correctly

Excerpt: ...by a mere English reader on the first syllable of the word, Eriphyle. But the truth is, that every 'such reader would speak it according to Rule VI. Eriphyle: and Parnel has actually used it so in verse--"The fad Eriphyle retreats to moan ' What wrought her husband's death, and caus'd her own." Elysium, 1. 45.--in spite of Virgil, whom he seems to have had in his eye when he chose the epithetyaf." "His Phaedram Procrimque locis, mcejlamque Eri phylen "Crudelis nati monstrantem vulnera cernit." AEn. VI. 445. From the fame place he has taken Laodamia, and anglicised her name in the same manner, a few lines below: "Fair Laodamia mourns her nuptial night." Rule V. might be illustrated in a similar manner.. Proserpine The analogy of the English language accents every word, of more than two syllables, on the antepenultima. We have indeed many polysyllables in which the accent is thrown further back; but they belong chiefly to a few terminations, or are influenced by the accentuation of words from which they are derived. I have thrown them together here. Proserpine was at first accented on.the middle syllable when used by our poets, according to the Latin. Thus Spenser: . "'Gan threaten hellish paine, ' And sad Proserpine's wrath, them to affright." F. %. I. 2 St. 2. And Milton: "Not that fair field "Of Enna, where Proserpin, gathering flow'rs,"--P. L. IV. 269. But growing familiar in English writing, it has since taken the English accentuation on the antepenult: ' But Proserpine the rest in form surpast." NichoL Misc. Poems, IV. 133. Shakspeare accentsBarahbas on the first.--Vol. iii. p. 125 Except as herein excepted; ..".'.., . Terminations '--;.'.-'i.
