The argument in this book is that the two concepts are inter-related and that good governance is a prerequisite for sustainability. During this time, however, the threats posed by the silent pandemic of antimicrobial resistance to human, animal, and plant health, food production, and the environment have not ceased and are steadily growing. More than ever before, we know that addressing the interlinked and multi-faceted challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance requires that we work together – across sectors, government, academic disciplines, civil society, the private sector, and the multilateral system – to advance a One Health approach. This strategic framework on antimicrobial resistance represents an important milestone in the decades-long history of collaboration between the Tripartite organizations - a collaboration that now is even stronger as a result of our close engagement with the United Nations Environment Programme. The framework sets out for the first time what our organizations – as leaders in the multilateral system on the human, animal, plant, and environmental health – will do jointly to support countries’ efforts to scale up national responses to antimicrobial resistance. Countries and partners are strongly encouraged to replicate and amplify the One Health approach used in the framework, based on their own contexts and needs.

Book excerpt: The Court of Justice of the European Union ('the Court' or 'the Institution') reports on its activity each year by publishing a report composed of the following: - the 'Judicial activity' report, - this management report (annual activity report by the authorising officer by delegation) drawn up in accordance with Article 74(9) of Regulation 2018/1046 on the financial rules applicable to the general budget of the Union ('the Financial Regulation'). Article 74(9) of the Financial Regulation requires the authorising officer by delegation to report to his or her Institution on the performance of his or her duties in the form of an annual activity report containing financial and management information and by declaring that he or she has reasonable assurance that: a) the information contained in the report presents a true and fair view; b) the resources assigned to the activities described in the report have been used for their intended purpose and in accordance with the principle of sound financial management; and c) the control procedures put in place give the necessary guarantees concerning the legality and regularity of the underlying transactions. The annual activity report includes information on the operations carried out, by reference to the objectives and performance considerations, the risks associated with those operations, the use made of the resources provided and the efficiency and effectiveness of internal control systems. Similarly to last year, the activities and the objectives achieved over the year are presented transversally and thematically, grouped according to five management areas. This makes it possible to highlight what has been achieved by the Institution over the past year, irrespective of the administrative entity in charge of a particular task or project within the Institution. The sections of the report relating to the risks associated with operations and interinstitutional cooperation are also presented transversally. Thus, following a first introductory chapter, Chapter II sets out the main developments in judicial activity in 2020 and the main aspects of the management of the Covid-19 health crisis. Chapter III is focused on the main results concerning the administrative activity of the Institution in 2020 as regards its various areas of management; Chapter IV analyses the risks associated with operations and Chapter V reports on interinstitutional cooperation and cooperation with bodies in the Member States in 2020. Chapters VI, VII and VIII report on the use of the budgetary and human resources made available to the Court, on the functioning of the internal control system and on the follow-up to the observations made in the Court of Auditors' reports and the Resolution of the European Parliament granting discharge for the 2019 financial year. Finally, various annexes provide more specific information, some of which is required under specific provisions of the Financial Regulation.

Book excerpt: In the face of climate change and resulting environmental and social crises, sustainable consumption has become a widely discussed issue and a key plank of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The majority of the sustainable consumption research uses the SDG framework, but this only serves to reinforce an individualistic, efficiency-based approach and it does not sufficiently cover the specific situation of transition economies. In contrast, this volume promotes a collective approach to sustainable consumption, and combines general theoretical issues with empirical examples from the Polish economy. The first part of the book presents a theoretical approach to collective consumption which has the core concepts of justice and human nature at its heart. This approach emphasises the role of collective rationality and categorises aspects of sustainable consumption as a common and public good. The second part investigates diversified aspects of sustainability, including socio-economic inequalities as barriers to sustainable consumption, consumer sovereignty in the context of current legal regulations, and the impact on employees of changes to the types and conditions of work. It also examines the sharing economy and the legal conditions of its development. The third part adopts a political perspective focusing on the state policies enhancing the role of investment in public goods, analyses photovoltaic programmes which promote prosumption and indicates challenges to sustainability faced by many countries such as the energy crisis, sustainable finance, and cooperative platforms. This book will be of great interest to researchers and scholars interested in sustainability and consumption issues in economics, management, law, public administration, and political science.
