And again much is lost in the college course in histology by the fact that, of those tissues which are treated of in the medical histology, the complete significance is lost by not seeing their earlier representation and variation in the lower forms. This volume has been written to secure a work that covers the general field of histology and is not restricted in the main to human and mammalian forms. It is intended to be a work that teaches general principles and teaches histology as a pure science and for its own sake. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Principles of Animal Histology A text-book of histology must have some very definite reason for appearing at the present time when so many good books bearing that title have appeared in the last few years and promise to continue to appear. These books, however, with practically no exceptions, have been intended for the medical school, and with this in view have been restricted to the histology of man, as a main theme, with more or less reference to other animals, principally the mammals. Such works have not filled the need of a text-book of general histology for the college course, a book that treats of the principles of the subject. They do not show what the animal cell is capable of as a builder of tissues which enable the organism to make use, more or less completely, of nearly all the known forces of physics and many of those of chemistry. This can be realized when we consider that they do not even mention such tissues as produce electricity, light, gases, and many other things. It is believed that it will serve as a broad foundation for future studies of morphology and embryology as well as for the medical studies. As to method of treatment, it has seemed convenient to treat each part, with some exceptions, by writing a general discussion of the subject, and following this discussion with detailed laboratory descriptions of types of the tissue, abundantly illustrated with good pen and ink drawings. Such concrete examples have been selected from readily accessible materials in most cases, and the proper procedure for securing and preparing the materials has been indicated in small type at the end of each chapter in many cases. In the last part of the book a chapter on technique will be found, giving a short statement of principles and a guide for some concrete practice. In some chapters the seminar work is not separated from the statements of principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Anatomy and Histology of the Laboratory Rat in Toxicology and Biomedical Research presents the detailed systematic anatomy of the rat, with a focus on toxicological needs. Most large works dealing with the laboratory rat provide a chapter on anatomy, but fall far short of the detailed account in this book which also focuses on the needs of toxicologists and others who use the rat as a laboratory animal. The book includes detailed guides on dissection methods and the location of specific tissues in specific organ systems. Crucially, the book includes classic illustrations from Miss H. G. Q. Rowett, along with new color photo-micrographs. Written by two of the top authors in their fields, this book can be used as a reference guide and teaching aid for students and researchers in toxicology. In addition, veterinary/medical students, researchers who utilize animals in biomedical research, and researchers in zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology and pharmacology will find this book to be a great resource. Illustrated with over 100 black and white and color images to assist understanding Contains detailed descriptions and explanations to accompany all images, thus helping with self-study Designed for toxicologic research for people from diverse backgrounds, including biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, immunology and general biomedical sciences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the origin and evolutionary radiation of the synapsids. About 320 million years ago a group of reptiles known as the synapsids emerged and forever changed Earth’s ecological landscapes. This book discusses the origin and radiation of the synapsids from their sail-backed pelycosaur ancestor to their diverse descendants, the therapsids or mammal-like reptiles, that eventually gave rise to mammals. It further showcases the remarkable evolutionary history of the synapsids in the Karoo Basin of South Africa and the environments that existed at the time. By highlighting studies of synapsid bone microstructure, it offers a unique perspective of how such studies are utilized to reconstruct various aspects of biology, such as growth dynamics, biomechanical function, and the attainment of sexual and skeletal maturity. A series of chapters outline the radiation and phylogenetic relationships of major synapsid lineages and provide direct insight into how bone histological analyses have led to an appreciation of these enigmatic animals as once-living creatures. The penultimate chapter examines the early radiation of mammals from their nonmammalian cynodont ancestors, and the book concludes by engaging the intriguing question of when and where endothermy evolved among the therapsids. “Ever since Nick Hotton’s book from the 1980s we have needed an update on the biology of therapsids, and it has been Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan and her students and associates who through their bone histological work have made the greatest progress in this field.” —Martin Sander, Steinmann Institute, University of Bonn “Forerunners of Mammals is full of meticulous detail . . . [I]t also contains a number of excellently rendered illustrations of some of the animals covered in the book, and the final chapter is a discussion of the evolution of endothermy that anyone with a background in biology might find of interest. . . . Recommended.” —Choice “Forerunners of Mammals will take interested readers beyond the classic jaw-to-ear appreciation of therapsids, towards a deeper appreciation of the ancestry of mammals.” —Journal of Mammalian Evolution “This volume represents a state-of-the-art contribution to our understanding of the paleobiology of how mammals arose, and what factors contributed to their evolutionary radiation and eventual success. It is highly recommended for anyone interested in these topics, and will be accessible to readers with minimal background in bone histology and synapsid paleontology.” —Quarterly Review of Biology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42. Written and edited by highly experienced, board-certified toxicologic pathologists Includes more than 700 high-resolution microscopic images from organs that are typically examined in safety assessment toxicology studies Detailed figure legends and chapter narratives present the salient features of each organ at each time interval Figures are available for further study via Elsevier’s Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification Valuable resource for toxicologic pathologists who are confronted with interpretation of lesions in juvenile rats in situations where age-matched concurrent controls are not available for comparison, e.g., with unscheduled decedents Figures are available for further study on ScienceDirect with Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification
