Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Economic Geology a Textbook Scope of Economic Geology. - Economic geology is the application of geology to economic problems. It is sometimes termed mining geology or applied geology. It treats of the occurrence, distribution, and origin of mineral deposits. In general the economic geologist is expected to answer the questions: Where is the deposit? Why is it where it is? To what depth is it likely to extend? What changes are likely to take place in it with increasing depth? How shall one find the continuation of a deposit that is "lost"? The practising economic geologist is expected to appraise mines and prospects or estimate their value and to recommend development work that will reveal at minimum cost any deposits that are not exposed. He is expected also to have a general knowledge of the distribution of deposits of the valuable minerals. Changes in mining, milling, and metallurgic practice are continually taking place and such changes may make it possible to treat at a satisfactory profit material that was formerly valueless. A few decades ago the introduction of the cyanide process made workable many deposits of gold-bearing rock that had previously been unworkable. Later the improvement of the cyanide process made certain silver-bearing deposits valuable. Still later the oil-flotation process made valuable ores of material that could not be treated before. These and other changes again and again have revived mining districts that were essentially abandoned. The geologist is frequently called upon for information about districts that are dormant. Changes in trade and transportation are continually changing conditions for mining. The economic geologist is expected to be informed as new needs arise. When the European war was begun there was need for many metals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive overview of economic geology for the general geologist and anyone else interested in the minerals industry and the global supply of raw materials. It includes some thought-provoking statements and questions for discussion on globalisation and current practices in the minerals industry. In the second edition, all chapters have been extensively revised, and a new author has been added to increase coverage of some mineral deposits and topics. The economic issues surrounding the exploitation of mineral resources is discussed in three of the six chapters of the book. It deals with issues that are commonly addressed in current science reporting – the rate of exploitation of natural resources, the question of when or if these resources will be exhausted, the pollution and social disturbance that accompanies mining, the compromises and challenges that arise from the explosion in demand from China, India and other rapidly developing countries, and the moral issues that surround mining of metals in lesser-developed countries for consumption in the “first-world” countries. The book will be useful both as an introductory text for students in the earth sciences and a reference volume for students, teachers and researchers of geography, economics and the social sciences.

Book excerpt: Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and "green" mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology: Or Geology in Its Relations to the Arts and Manufactures There are works on agricultural geology, on building and decorative stones, on mortars and cements, on coal-mining, on veins and lodes, and on ores and metallurgy; but as far as the author knows there is no general treatise on geology in its numerous relations to the Arts and Manufactures. As a teacher in a busy centre of miscellaneous industry, he has experienced the want of such a work, and especially of one sufficiently brief and methodical to be used as a Text-book; hence the origin of the present volume. While primarily intended for the student of Applied Geology, it may be useful to the agriculturist, builder, miner, civil engineer, manufacturing chemist, and others who have to deal with minerals and metals; and at the same time may not be devoid of interest to the general reader. The field of industrial requirements is yearly extending, and there are few substances in the earth's crust which are now not turned to account in the multifarious industries of civilised life. A knowledge of these substances - their nature, geological position, and abundance - cannot fail to be of use to those who have to deal with them; and some acquaintance with them, in a general way, can as little fail to be of interest to the intelligent observer of that scientific invention and industrial skill which labour so assiduously to convert every product of nature into objects of utility and ornament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology: With Special Reference to the United States The continued advance in our knowledge of Economic Geology has necessitated considerable revision for the new edition. In addition, the author has, at the request of a number of teachers, included a description of the more important Canadian mineral deposits, as well as brief references to some of the well-known ones of other countries. While these additions to the text and illustrations have increased the size of the book somewhat, the number of pages is not to be taken as a gauge of the actual increase in size, for the reason that over one hundred full-page illustrations, formerly bound as inserts, are paged in with the text in the present edition. The latest available statistics have been included, and unless otherwise stated are taken from the United States Geological Survey, and Canadian Department of Mines reports. In a few cases, investigations to which reference might have been made in the text have appeared too late to include them, but it has still been possible to insert them in the reference list, and this has been done.
