Today’s ham radio goes beyond wireless to extreme wireless, Operators transmit data and pictures, use the Internet, laser, and microwave transmitters, and travel to places high and low to make contact. In an emergency or natural disaster, ham radio can replace downed traditional communication and save lives. Whether you’re just getting turned on to ham radio or already have your license, Ham Radio for Dummies helps you with the terminology, the technology and the talknology. You discover how to: Decipher the jargon and speak the language Buy or upgrade your equipment, including the all-important antennas Build a ham radio shack, complete with the rig, a computer, mobile/base rig, microphones, keys, headphones, antennas, cables and feedlines Study for your license, master Morse code, take the test and get your call sign Understand the basics of ragchews (conversations), nets (organized on-air meetings) and DX-ing (competing in contacts to make contacts) Keeping logs with the vital statistics, including time (in UTC or World Time), frequency, and call sign Written by Ward Silver, an electrical engineer, Certified Amateur Radio License Examiner, and columnist for QST, a monthly magazine for ham operators, Ham Radio for Dummies gives you the info you need to delve into the science or dive into the conversation. It explains how you can: Tune in to the most common types of signals, including Morse Code (CW), single-sideband (SSB), FM, Radioteletype (RTTY), and data signals Break in, introduce yourself, converse, and say or signal goodbye Communicate while traveling (ham radio goes where mobile phones go dead) Register with an emergency organization such as ARES and RACES Help in emergencies such as earthquakes, wildfires, or severe weather Pursue your special interests, including contacting distant stations, participating in contests, exploring the digital modes, using satellites, transmitting images, and more Complete with a glossary and ten pages of additional suggested resources, Ham Radio for Dummies encourages you to touch that dial and take that mike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization problems in practice are diverse and evolve over time, giving rise to - quirements both for ready-to-use optimization software packages and for optimization software libraries, which provide more or less adaptable building blocks for app- cation-specific software systems. In order to apply optimization methods to a new type of problem, corresponding models and algorithms have to be “coded” so that they are accessible to a computer. One way to achieve this step is the use of a mod- ing language. Such modeling systems provide an excellent interface between models and solvers, but only for a limited range of model types (in some cases, for example, linear) due, in part, to limitations imposed by the solvers. Furthermore, while m- eling systems especially for heuristic search are an active research topic, it is still an open question as to whether such an approach may be generally successful. Modeling languages treat the solvers as a “black box” with numerous controls. Due to variations, for example, with respect to the pursued objective or specific problem properties, - dressing real-world problems often requires special purpose methods. Thus, we are faced with the difficulty of efficiently adapting and applying appropriate methods to these problems. Optimization software libraries are intended to make it relatively easy and cost effective to incorporate advanced planning methods in application-specific software systems. A general classification provides a distinction between callable packages, nume- cal libraries, and component libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects, Latent Class Analysis of Survey Error successfully guides readers through the accurate interpretation of survey results for quality evaluation and improvement. This book is a comprehensive resource on the key statistical tools and techniques employed during the modeling and estimation of classification errors, featuring a special focus on both latent class analysis (LCA) techniques and models for categorical data from complex sample surveys. Drawing from his extensive experience in the field of survey methodology, the author examines early models for survey measurement error and identifies their similarities and differences as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Subsequent chapters treat topics related to modeling, estimating, and reducing errors in surveys, including: Measurement error modeling forcategorical data The Hui-Walter model and othermethods for two indicators The EM algorithm and its role in latentclass model parameter estimation Latent class models for three ormore indicators Techniques for interpretation of modelparameter estimates Advanced topics in LCA, including sparse data, boundary values, unidentifiability, and local maxima Special considerations for analyzing datafrom clustered and unequal probability samples with nonresponse The current state of LCA and MLCA (multilevel latent class analysis), and an insightful discussion on areas for further research Throughout the book, more than 100 real-world examples describe the presented methods in detail, and readers are guided through the use of lEM software to replicate the presented analyses. Appendices supply a primer on categorical data analysis, and a related Web site houses the lEM software. Extensively class-tested to ensure an accessible presentation, Latent Class Analysis of Survey Error is an excellent book for courses on measurement error and survey methodology at the graduate level. The book also serves as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners working in business, government, and the social sciences who develop, implement, or evaluate surveys.

Book excerpt: The three-volume set LNCS 8009-8011 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, UAHCI 2013, held as part of the 15th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2013, held in Las Vegas, USA in July 2013, jointly with 12 other thematically similar conferences. The total of 1666 papers and 303 posters presented at the HCII 2013 conferences was carefully reviewed and selected from 5210 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. The total of 230 contributions included in the UAHCI proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this three-volume set. The 78 papers included in this volume are organized in the following topical sections: universal access to smart environments and ambient assisted living; universal access to learning and education; universal access to text, books, ebooks and digital libraries; health, well-being, rehabilitation and medical applications; access to mobile interaction.
