Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Original Free Will Baptists Original Free Will Baptists are the spiritual descendants of the General Baptists who settled in North Carolina during the colonial period. These General Baptists were the earliest Baptists to settle in the colony and were among the earliest organized religious groups in the colony, preceded only by the Quakers and the Anglicans. The story of these early Baptists has often been overshadowed by the accounts of other and later religious move ments which swept through the settlements of North Carolina and the rest of the region which became known as the South. Once this denomination had adopted the name Free Will Baptist and had begun to develop its own identity, they then began to preserve some account of their annual conferences, without which it would be impossible for one to know very much about them, apart from the oral traditions passed on from generation to generation. In the late nineteenth century there appeared two accounts of their history in North Carolina. The first was a summary account of their origin in this state, written by Rufus K. Heam about 1880, and the second consisted of a revised and enlarged version of Heam's account of their beginnings and a more detailed history of their pilgrimage through the nineteenth century, using abstracts of the minutes of the conferences during this period and written by Thad F. Harrison and J. M. Barfield. The latter was published in 1897 and served to inform a later generation of Free Will Baptists concerning their heritage. During the twentieth century more adequate records of this denomination havebeen kept and more attention has been given to preserving such materials, especially during the last few decades. In addition, research has turned up more information on the early period, including the colonial and the English General Baptist background of the denomination. As a result it is possible to give a more comprehensive and more accurate account of the denomina tion's history. For many years the author has had a deep interest in the history of Original Free Will Baptists. That interest, which beganof time the idea that he should undertake to write a history of the denomination began to take root and finally came to fruition following his retirement from the, college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Baptists, Who They Are, and What They Have Done: Being Eight Lectures, Historical and Descriptive, Given by General Baptist Ministers in London, During the Past Winter We have spoken of Baptists not because we think them perfect. We know them too well to cherish any such mistakes. Nor have we chosen this topic because we are vain at least we think not. We take no credit to ourselves for being Baptists. Some of us certainly would not have been such if we could have helped it. Talking after the manner of men, we could have done better for ourselves if we had helped it. But necessity was laid upon us. We are simply true. We have followed such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Missouri Baptist General Association An intimate acquaintance of over a third of a cen tury has prepared me to speak of him from personal knowledge as well as from the record his work has made. There are lines written deeper in humanity than those recorded by the pen'. And Dr. Yeaman has by a long and useful life written his name by works of righteousness and his service of love upon the hearts of the people to whom he has been closely allied and with whom he has ever been in brain and heart in thorough sympathy. But it is of the work of the author in Missouri that I wish here to write. Almost from the very hour of his settlement in St. Louis, in March, 1870, he became completely absorbed in the Baptist interests in the whole state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baptist Missionary Society, Vol. 2 of 2: From 1792 to 1842; To Which Is Added a Sketch of the General Baptist Mission NO part of the world has of late years awakened a deeper interest in the minds Of men than Jamaica. That island has been the theatre Of transactions which, in some respects, are unparalleled in the history of mankind connected, as they have been, not much with the political revolutions Of empires, as with the more felicitous and more splendid achieve ments Of Christianity. There, Oppression has been overthrown; inhumanity counteracted; and man elevated, from his lowest condition, to the rights of freedom, and the liberty Of the gospel. The struggle has been arduous, but the result glorious; affording lessons Of inestimable worth both to present and future generations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indiana Baptist History, 1798-1908 The author having through many years interested himself in gathering data for a history of the Baptists of Indiana, had the impression that he owed it to his brethren to undertake the work. He has found them willing and glad to assist in the undertaking, and he is under obligation to many; he would particularly mention the help rendered by the Rev. J. K. Howard, of Indianapolis, and the Rev. L. S. Sanders, of Franklin, in gaining a knowledge of the Associations of southwestern Indiana; and the Rev. Charles Herring, of Lima, in securing statistics of the Free Baptists of northern Indiana. Certain facts are found here which may also be found in Dr. William Cathcart's Baptist Encyclopaedia, and in Dr. J. A. Smith's Baptists of the Western States east of the Mississippi - but the author furnished the Indiana notes for both these treatises. As to the statistics of numbers and finances, only approximate accuracy can be claimed, because of the imperfect records and reports of the churches and because of the fact that the church year, the Association year, the Convention year and the year of the different national denominational organizations do not coincide with the calendar year, nor with each other. The statistics given are substantially correct. The biographical sketches have been given in connection with the Association or Society in which the person did most of his denominational work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky Baptist History: 1770-1922 The story of the rise, progress, trials and triumphs of Baptists in Kentucky is more thrilling and remarkable than the purest fiction of the wildest imagination. One hundred and fifty-two years ago there was one Baptist on Kentucky soil, Elder Squire Boone; today there are about three hundred thousand Baptists in the State of Kentucky. This, too, in spite of the fact that Kentucky's fruitful soil has been the hotbed of almost every conceivable heresy. Kentucky has been in theological, as well as in profane history, a "dark and bloody ground." She has been the storm center of religious controversy, the battle-field of jarring opinions from her earliest history. Her preachers have been trained in a stern school, being men of war from their youth up. "Infidelity," "Deism," "Unitarianism," "Hell-Redemptionism, " "Arianism," " Two-Seedism, " "Campbellism," "Hard-shellism," "Old Landmark-ism," "Whittsittism," "Gospel Missionism," succeeding and overlapping one the other, for more than 125 years have divided the Baptist forces of this state and shorn them of much of their power. But our brethren farther south should not complacently refer to Kentucky Baptists as "a scrappy bunch," forgetting the fact that Kentucky has fought the battles for the other states as well as for herself, and that but for the heroic struggles in Kentucky there would of necessity have been greater struggles in these other states. Kentucky has served as a break-water for the South against the flood of heresies that has swept down from the North. The history has been un folded under such subjects as admit of easy applica tion to all the States alike. By means of such treatment, the essential facts of a general denomina tional history of the States of the South, east of the Mississippi, are easily presented.
