Book excerpt: Over the last several years airport operators have introduced green initiatives in order to improve the overall sustainability of their airports. Drivers could include financial viability, staffing considerations, or other social or environmental factors. There is a significant compilation of sustainability practices from larger airports, but a less robust description of initiatives for smaller airports. This report focuses on drivers and outcomes of green initiatives undertaken at small commercial and general aviation airports. Information used in this study was acquired through a review of the literature and survey or interviews with airport operators at small and general aviation airports. Although the study found that more than half of small airports have adopted one or more sustainable initiatives and almost 20% have a formal sustainability plan in place, many of those participating in the study do not believe that their airport has an impact on the environment, and because of lack of funding and different priorities, they choose not to pursue sustainable initiatives. However, sustainability is more than environmental initiatives. These are barriers, but more airports will pursue sustainable initiatives if more funding is made available, sustainability incentives are created, or sustainability becomes a mandate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several criteria relating to the handling of general aviation on airports have been developed. In many cases, modifications of existing criteria are suggested. These include the subjects of runway-length corrections, instrument-approach needs, airspace needs, annual capacity of air ports, guidance for planning separate runway facilities for general aviation, procedures for performing economic analyses, and the effects of airport accessibility. The study has concentrated on planning for general aviation in metropolitan areas. Observations of general aviation operations at air-carrier and general aviation airports have indicated that new criteria for determining the numbers of airports required in metropolitan areas are needed. In developing regional plans and individual airport plans, the importance of using a cost-versus-benefit economic analysis is stressed. The criteria developed have been tested by applying them to the Lambert-St. Louis airport and to regional planning for the Washington, D.C. area.

Book excerpt: "In April of 2006, LopezGarcia Group was contracted by the TxDOT Environmental Studies Division (ENV) to undertake a study of historic-age general aviation airports within the state of Texas. TxDOT and , more specifically, the TxDOT Aviation Division (AVN), supports engineering and technical services for planning, construction, and maintenance of aeronautical facilities; creating long-range development plans for aviation facilities; the application, receipt, and disbursement of federal funds for aviation facilities; and supports the statewide airport system (TxDOT 2006). This history of general aviation in Texas is intended to provide the contextual preparation for subsequent fieldwork, wherein TxDOT will undertake historic-age aviation resource surveys at airports they support. These surveys will provide information on historic-age aviation resources that may be affected by undertakings supported by TxDOT. TxDOT undertakings are subject to current national and state historic preservation laws. Both the Texas Antiquities Code and the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), as amended, apply to these undertakings."--Page ii.

Book excerpt: TRB's Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2471 consists of 9 papers selected for awards in a nationwide competition under the 2014 to 2015 Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues. Topics explored by the papers include U.S. civil air show crashes, 1993 to 2013; identifying and analyzing atypical flights; spatiotemporal dynamics in identification of aircraft-bird strikes; airport infrastructure investment; quantifying the performance of warm-mix asphalt and reclaimed asphalt pavement in flexible airfield pavements; and airfield pavement response caused by heavy aircraft takeoff. This issue also explores the impact of heavy aircraft takeoffs on airfield pavement; an evaluation of pavement preservation and maintenance activities at general aviation airports in Texas; airport traffic and metropolitan economies; and an analysis of the timing of flight delay announcements by U.S. airlines. The Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues is managed by TRB's Airport Cooperative Research Program and sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration. The program is designed to encourage applied research on airport and related aviation system issues and to foster the next generation of aviation community leaders. -- Publisher's website
