First, the book includes the genealogy research of one Harding line beginning with Adam, 4th Earl Harding (1349-1412) in Northumberland England down to Thomas Harding who came to Northumberland, Virginia in 1651. The "Virginia Hardings" lived in Northumberland and then Stafford County, Virginia between 1651 and 1819. The history of these "Virginia Harding" families is discussed in detail. Henry Wildy Harding, Sr. then left Stafford County, Virginia in 1819 and came to Tennessee and finally to Kentucky as the result of the "Jackson Purchase" where land could be acquired at a very reasonable price. American History is wrapped around this family including the Virginia Colony, events of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and family participation in the Civil War. A unique feature of the book is the inclusion of over 800 biographies (most with pictures) of the descendants of Henry Wildy Harding, Sr. of which over 500 are living cousins as of Dec 2017. All cousins with biographies have been assigned a D'Aboville number that shows how they connect to this Harding line. The book includes information about church history, the colonies, slavery, and pioneer life as this family lived in Virginia and then moved west to Kentucky. After the Civil War, family members moved to Texas, South Carolina, Mississippi and back to Tennessee. Famous cousins, include President Warren G. Harding, and John Harding, who established the Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville, Tennessee, are discussed and documented as well as connections to John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley of the Mayflower. British Royalty connections are also revealed.

Samuel and Love were married in 1789 and lived on Cape Cod ... Between the years 1798--1800 the family moved from Cape Cod to Brookfield, Vt."--Page 22. After his marriage in 1624 to Marthe Doane of Plymouth, Massachusetts, they made their home in Plymouth. Joseph Harding died in 1630 and Martha in 1633. Joseph was the son of John Harding, who was born in 1567 in England and died in 1637 probably in Massachusetts. Book excerpt: The Croatan Indians of Sampson County, NC, written by George Edwin Butler (1868-1941) and composed only a year after Special Indian Agent Orlando McPherson's Indians of North Carolina report, was an appeal to the state of North Carolina to create schools for the "Croatans" of Sampson County just as it had for those designated as Croatans in, for example, Robeson County, North Carolina. Butler's report would prove to be important in an evolving system of southern racial apartheid that remained uncertain of the place of Native Americans. It documents a troubled history of cultural exchange and conflict between North Carolina's native peoples and the European colonists who came to call it home. The report reaches many erroneous conclusions, in part because it was based in an anthropological framework of white supremacy, segregation-era politics, and assumptions about racial "purity." Indeed, Butler's colonial history connecting Sampson County Indians to early colonial settlers was used to legitimize them and to deflect their categorization as African-Americans. In statements about the fitness of certain populations to coexist with European-American neighbors and in sympathetic descriptions of nearly-white "Indians," it reveals the racial and cultural sensibilities of white North Carolinians, the persistent tensions between tolerance and self-interest, and the extent of their willingness to accept indigenous "Others" as neighbors. The recorded information was dated 1275. For simplicity, I have in most cases used the spelling Keys or Keyes. The Keys (families) were started by Milley Keys, except for one family in this area and that family is listed in Chapter 7 of this document. There are some instances where the two families inter-married. The 2nd family was the decedents of William Keys from Virginia perhaps a cousin of Milley. (Evidence points to Milleys ancestors being from England and dating back to the mid 1650s.)
