Book Synopsis Louisiana's Response to Extreme Weather by : Shirley Laska
Download or read book Louisiana's Response to Extreme Weather written by Shirley Laska and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book takes an in-depth look at Louisiana as a state which is ahead of the curve in terms of extreme weather events, both in frequency and magnitude, and in its responses to these challenges including recovery and enhancement of resiliency. Louisiana faced a major tropical catastrophe in the 21st century, and experiences the fastest rising sea level. Weather specialists, including those concentrating on sea level rise acknowledge that what the state of Louisiana experiences is likely to happen to many more, and not necessarily restricted to coastal states. This book asks and attempts to answer what Louisiana public officials, scientists/engineers, and those from outside of the state who have been called in to help, have done to achieve resilient recovery. How well have these efforts fared to achieve their goals? What might these efforts offer as lessons for those states that will be likely to experience enhanced extreme weather? Can the challenges of inequality be truly addressed in recovery and resilience? How can the study of the Louisiana response as a case be blended with findings from later disasters such as New York/New Jersey (Hurricane Sandy) and more recent ones to improve understanding as well as best adaptation applications – federal, state and local?

Book Synopsis American Uprising by : Daniel Rasmussen
Download or read book American Uprising written by Daniel Rasmussen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A chilling and suspenseful account [of] the culmination of a signal episode in the history of American race relations.” —Adam Goodheart, The New York Times Book Review In January 1811, five hundred slaves, dressed in military uniforms and armed with guns, cane knives, and axes, rose up from the plantations around New Orleans and set out to conquer the city. Ethnically diverse, politically astute, and highly organized, this self-made army challenged not only the economic system of plantation agriculture but also American expansion. Their march represented the largest act of armed resistance against slavery in the history of the United States. American Uprising is the riveting, long-neglected story of the rebel army's dramatic march on the city, and its shocking conclusion. No North American slave uprising—not Gabriel Prosser's, not Denmark Vesey's, not Nat Turner's—has rivaled the scale of this rebellion either in terms of the number of the slaves involved or the number who were killed. More than one hundred slaves were slaughtered by federal troops and French planters, who then sought to write the event out of history and prevent the spread of the slaves' revolutionary philosophy. Through groundbreaking research, Daniel Rasmussen offers a window into expansionist America, illuminating the early history of New Orleans and providing new insight into the path to the Civil War and the slave revolutionaries who fought and died for the hope of freedom. “Crisp, confident . . . Rasmussen tells this story with verve.” —John Stauffer, The Wall Street Journal “Breathtaking. . . . [A] fascinating narrative of slavery and resistance [that] tells us something about history itself—about how fiction can become fact, and how ‘history’ is sometimes nothing more than erasure.” —Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

This book was released on 2005-01-31 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1941, Old Louisiana Plantation Homes and Family Trees is the definitive guide to the important plantation homes of the Pelican State, as well as the socially and historically prominent families who lived in them. Volume I of the two-volume, boxed set describes structures in several diverse sections of the state, from traditional, Spanish-moss-hung plantations in south Louisiana to the African-inspired structures on the rounds of Melrose Plantation in Natchitoches Parish. The first volume features many rare photographs of historically significant townhomes, plantations, and outbuildings--many no longer extant--and provides detailed genealogical and anecdotal information on a genteel society and lavish lifestyle that is now only a cherished memory. Some of the great houses discussed include D'Estrehan, Tezcuco, Seven Oaks, Parlange, Asphodel, Evergreen, and Rosedown. Volume II traces the history of several important families and features numerous portraits, coats of arms, and archival photographs. It also contains a wealth of genealogical and biographical information about many of the most prominent families in Louisiana history. Some of the family names included are La Frenier, De Livaudais, Forstall, Fortier, Schmidt, Sghers, Milliken, Parlange, De Brierre, D'Herbigny, Butler, Pipes, Ellis, Percy, Plauch, Barrow, Bringier, Kenner, Stauffer, Knox, Semmes, Walmsley, Ranlett, Smyth, Sully, De Marigny, De La Ronde, Almonaster, De Dreux, Villere, Beauregard, Matthews, Rathbone, De Buys, Hicky, Duggan, De Macarty, vonPhul, Cade, Du Brocca, Allain, D'Estrehan des Tours, De La Barr, Koch, Muller, Bruce, Boehm, Seebold, De Bachell, De Vilbiss, De Beaulieu de Marconnay, Konzelman, Parker, Pitkin, Levert, Ware, Prudhomme, Wilkinson, and Stewart.
Download or read book Cabanocey written by Lillian C. Bourgeois and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1999-04-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana has sixty-four parishes, and many of them are as individual and different as the state itself is different from others in the Union. St. James Parish, a small parish of 249 square miles, is not only one of the oldest settlements in the state, but it is different in its population make-up and is important historically. Cabanocey . . . is a splendid history of the Parish of St. James. . . . Lillian C. Bourgeois captured the spirit that animates the population, which is descended from French, Spanish, Acadian, German, and Creole peoples. Bourgeois writes of the population's customs, beliefs, language differences, and folklore. Cabanocey is not a collection of dry facts and dates; rather, it vividly describes how, more than one hundred years ago, the people of St. James Parish lived, who they were, and what they contributed to their parish and their state. Before the Civil War, St. James Parish was the educational center of Louisiana, and Jefferson College was the first important college in the state. Founded in 1830, it had fine buildings, a well-equipped laboratory, and an impressive library. The Convent of the Sacred Heart (1835) for girls was well-known by prominent families in Louisiana, Mexico, and Central America, who sent their daughters there. Cabanocey contains St. James genealogies and thousands of names of early settlers, including the soldiers, taxpayers, officials, prominent families, and the first settlers and their children. From the early censuses and church and court records, descent is traced for many names. The censuses of 1766, 1769, and 1777 are complete and were obtained from the archives in Seville, Spain.
