He was married to Barbara Zahnd (1823-1904) in 1847 possibly in Albany, N.Y. She was born in Schwarzenburg, Canton Bern, Switzerland. They were parents of seven children. Descendants live in Wisconsin, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Canada and elsewhere.
