Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the human right to adequate food and nutrition as evolving concept and identifies two structural "disconnects" fueling food insecurity for a billion people, and disproportionally affecting women, children, and rural food producers: the separation of women’s rights from their right to adequate food and nutrition, and the fragmented attention to food as commodity and the medicalization of nutritional health. Three conditions arising from these disconnects are discussed: structural violence and discrimination frustrating the realization of women’s human rights, as well as their private and public contributions to food and nutrition security for all; many women’s experience of their and their children’s simultaneously independent and intertwined subjectivities during pregnancy and breastfeeding being poorly understood in human rights law and abused by poorly-regulated food and nutrition industry marketing practices; and the neoliberal economic system’s interference both with the autonomy and self-determination of women and their communities and with the strengthening of sustainable diets based on democratically governed local food systems. The book calls for a social movement-led reconceptualization of the right to adequate food toward incorporating gender, women’s rights, and nutrition, based on the food sovereignty framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how and why Portugal and Spain increasingly engaged with women in their African colonies in the crucial period from the 1950s to the 1970s. It explores the rhetoric of benevolent Iberian colonialism, gendered Westernization, and development for African women as well as actual imperial practices – from forced resettlement to sexual exploitation to promoting domestic skills. Focusing on Angola, Mozambique, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, the author mines newly available and neglected documents, including sources from Portuguese and Spanish women’s organizations overseas. They offer insights into how African women perceived and responded to their assigned roles within an elite that was meant to preserve the empires and stabilize Afro-Iberian ties. The book also retraces parallels and differences between imperial strategies regarding women and the notions of African anticolonial movements about what women should contribute to the struggle for independence and the creation of new nation-states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses migration and space-spanning social network relationships as normal realities of life in African societies. It offers an overview of the research landscape and introduces an agency-centered theoretical model that provides a conceptual framework for translocality. The authors Malte Steinbrink and Hannah Niedenführ plead for a translocal approach to social transformation, showing how the translocality of livelihoods is shaping the lives of half a billion people on the continent and impacting local conditions. Using an action-oriented approach, the book analyzes the effects of translocal livelihoods on diverse aspects of economic, environmental and social change in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. The study thus makes an innovative contribution not only to migration research and development studies but also to the discussion around the policy and practice of development cooperation and planning. It is time to rethink development in light of translocal realities. The book appeals to scholars and researchers in geography, sociology, policy-making and planning, development studies, migration research and rural development.

Book excerpt: Increasing recognition of the interaction between poverty, and resources and environmental degradation has led to interventions that put more and more emphasis on working with local communities to improve the management of the environment and natural resources. Identifying and overcoming the barriers to women's, and men's, full participation in the management of resources is a necessary first step towards the ultimate goals of poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Understanding the environmental roles and responsibilities of women and men is critical to sustainable resource management practices. The chapters in the book reflect experiences with mainstreaming gender and women's issues in natural resources management. The introductory paper, focusing on the history and current status of gender and natural resources management, is followed by five further papers presenting cases of this approach, written by experts and practitioners from different parts of the world. The papers examine diverse natural resources from different perspectives, ranging from the household and community level to national and regional policy. They examine the security of women's rights to common property resources and land in West Africa; mainstreaming gender in water policy and institutions in Gujarat, India; gender-responsive planning in wetland development in Uganda; empowering women in managing natural resources in mountain areas of the Hundu-Kush Himalayas of Pakistan; and the development of gender policies for environmental ministries in Mesoamerica. The papers are complemented by an extensive annotated bibliography, including references to books, journals and electronic documents, and a list of relevant Web resources. Together, these resources provide a global overview of the work in this field. Published in association with KIT Publishers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Turkey, since the middle of the 1940s, gecekondu (squatter) settlements have emerged in an urban context characterised by rapid rural-to-urban migration, inefficient administrative structures and intense land speculation. Today, some practices of the early gecekondu are still in use, while its dwellers have introduced new strategies to avoid demolition, get access to infrastructure and achieve legalisation. Recent gecekondu builders by-pass planning authorities by adopting tools of formal planning. At the same time local authorities bend their own rules and tend to tolerate informalities.
