Book excerpt: Discrepancies between males and females in access to schooling, school completion rates, and participation in employment opportunities are still more the norm in some regions of the world than others. Limited access to education plagues women in Nigeria as well as in Sub-Saharan Africa. Disparity in access to educational opportunity is a pressing gender equity issue in Nigeria (World Bank, 2003). Relatively few studies have focused on obtaining the viewpoints of women who experience this phenomenon. To hear the voices of these women regarding how they gained or were denied access to education in the Nigerian context, a cross-section of 24 (12 educated and 12 non-literate) Nigerian women were recruited for this phenomenological qualitative study. While 12 of them were college professors currently in teaching positions at three different universities, 12 others were non-literate, self-employed women. Purposefully selected, the participants were representative of the three major ethnic groups, and of the geo-political character of Nigeria. Review of relevant literature focused on the three historical moments in Nigerian education, and how they played out with other socio-cultural factors to affect women's participation in education. The primary method for collecting data was individual, face-to-face in-depth interviews. Utilizing the phenomenological approach, the interviews focused on "generating useful information about lived experience and its meanings, as well as to understand how, through experience, the phenomenon being studied appears to the consciousness of the participant" (Denzin & Lincoln, 2003). Significant themes that emerged for the non-literate participants indicated that lack of information of the value of education on the part of parents, early marriage, and cultural capital on males over females accounted for denial of access to education. For the educated, family background, men's perception of educated women as a threat, emotional support from significant others were important factors. A cross-sectional theme that emerged revealed that traditional education was still highly regarded today, but incomplete without formal education. Surprisingly, religion was not a barrier to women education in this study. Other findings and implications for practice and research were discussed.

This study found a significant wealth gap in reading and numeracy achievements among Nigerian children. I also found that family wealth, parental education, and region explain differences in academic achievement. Family wealth was found to be the most important variable influencing achievement in reading and numeracy, followed by mother's education and then region. Overall, the findings in this study suggest no significant differences in reading and numeracy achievement for boys and girls. Although gender was not found to be consistently associated with academic achievement in this study, it should not be assumed to mean that gender equality in education exists in Nigeria. It is widely reported elsewhere that gender-biased educational opportunity plays a major role in influencing educational attainment and achievement. More research, preferably using a longitudinal study design, is needed to identify the trends and patterns of gender roles in Nigerian educational attainment and achievement. The findings in this study provide the foundation for making further investigations on the association of social, economic, and cultural factors with academic achievement and to assess inequality in education in Nigeria.

The predominant theoretical perspective that has been advanced to explain the school failure of marginalized students is the deficit thinking paradigm—a parsimonious, endogenous, and pseudoscientific model that blames such students as the makers of their own school failure. Deficit thinking asserts that the low academic achievement of many marginalized students is due to their limited intellectual ability, poor academic achievement motivation, and being raised in dysfunctional families and cultures. Organizational building of human capacity development continues to become a major factor and issue of discourse because of the fundamental role it plays in the economic growth and development of countries in the world. It drives the employment of personnel and the movement towards achieving the organizational goals. It is an undeniable fact that organizational goals are achievable because of the type of staff list of an organization. It is therefore imperative to assess how gender equity drives human capacity training in organizations. In this work the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) of Lagos acts as a field work. A survey research design was used for the study. The sampled population consisted of 1,314 senior members of staff of twenty LGEAs in Lagos Sate. Five of these LGEAs, which is twenty percent, were selected at random using simple random sampling procedure. Then, stratified sampling procedure was used to select the sample size from the chosen LGEAs. The Bowley’s formula was used to calculate the sample in order to have an empirically backed up data. The research employed the human capital theory to assess the gender factor among male and female workers and if they are open to the same opportunities in the organizational structure. It was found that gender equity existed among staff of Local Government Education Authority in Lagos State in the aspect of opportunities open to women and men in the area of human capacity training and leadership development, except that the degree of association for women is at a lower percentage compared to men. It is therefore recommended that the use of eclectic mixture of the equity theory and human capital theory gives not only a better understanding of how equally men and women are treated when given the same opportunities, but also in clearly measuring the extent to which men and women perform on their job towards the achievement of organizational goals given the same training.

The study employs a qualitative research design, as it deals with unpacking concepts, exploring experiences of individuals in a social environment and dealing with data that is subject to interpretation.

The sample consisted of twenty male and female faculty at senior-management level in Nigerian public universities drawn from the four geographic regions of Nigeria, namely, North Central, South East, South South, and South West. Results revealed the existence of pronounced gender inequality and evidence of several factor constraints that contribute to the disproportionate representation of female and male faculty at the senior-management level in public Nigerian universities. These factors were highlighted in open, axial, and selective coding.
