Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An audit of the Bureau of Reclamation's (BoR) final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the operations of the Glen Canyon Dam (GCD). This report discusses: whether BoR's determination of the impact of various dam-operating alternatives on selected resources was reasonable; and what, if any, concerns still exist on the part of key interested parties about the final EIS. Since the GCD, located in Page, AZ, was completed by the BoR in 1963, it has been used to generate power during periods of high demand. The fluctuation releases of water have caused concerns about the detrimental effects such flows have in the Grand Canyon.

The first section of the book provides the context and theoretical foundation of nonmarket valuation, along with practical data issues. Both practitioners of nonmarket valuation and those who are new to the field will come away from these methods chapters with a thorough understanding of how to design, implement, and analyze a nonmarket valuation study. The concluding section takes stock of the usefulness of nonmarket valuation, highlighting chapters on benefit transfer, the role of nonmarket valuation in real decisions about natural resources, and where nonmarket valuation is headed in the future. As a companion to A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation, a website has been developed, http://www.fs.fed.us/nonmarketprimerdata/. This website includes downloadable datasets for each of the techniques described in the Primer, as well as links to published journal articles and reports based on the data. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book sheds light on the ways in which modern tools of welfare economics can be used to assess the benefits and costs of resource conflicts involving hydropower. The chapters highlight key methodological issues in this area; ranging from the intersection between cost-benefit analysis and behavioral economics, to the value of load balancing services provided by hydropower. The inclusion of insights from expert contributors from both sides of the Atlantic brings a unique and interesting range of viewpoints to the work.Several factors suggest that resource conflicts involving moving water are likely to be even more difficult to resolve today than they have been in the past. The contributors, top scholars in resource economics, consider a variety of issues through the lens of cost-benefit analysis. In the first part ofthe book, they address specific cases and issues from North America and Europe. The book closes with a more general look at the topic.
