Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by a ranking authority in Gaussian harmonic analysis, this book embodies a state-of-the-art entrée at the intersection of two important fields of research: harmonic analysis and probability. The book is intended for a very diverse audience, from graduate students all the way to researchers working in a broad spectrum of areas in analysis. Written with the graduate student in mind, it is assumed that the reader has familiarity with the basics of real analysis as well as with classical harmonic analysis, including Calderón-Zygmund theory; also some knowledge of basic orthogonal polynomials theory would be convenient. The monograph develops the main topics of classical harmonic analysis (semigroups, covering lemmas, maximal functions, Littlewood-Paley functions, spectral multipliers, fractional integrals and fractional derivatives, singular integrals) with respect to the Gaussian measure. The text provide an updated exposition, as self-contained as possible, of all the topics in Gaussian harmonic analysis that up to now are mostly scattered in research papers and sections of books; also an exhaustive bibliography for further reading. Each chapter ends with a section of notes and further results where connections between Gaussian harmonic analysis and other connected fields, points of view and alternative techniques are given. Mathematicians and researchers in several areas will find the breadth and depth of the treatment of the subject highly useful.

Book excerpt: The changes to U.S. immigration law that were instituted in 1965 have led to an influx of West African immigrants to New York, creating an enclave Harlem residents now call ''Little Africa.'' These immigrants are immediately recognizable as African in their wide-sleeved robes and tasseled hats, but most native-born members of the community are unaware of the crucial role Islam plays in immigrants' lives. Zain Abdullah takes us inside the lives of these new immigrants and shows how they deal with being a double minority in a country where both blacks and Muslims are stigmatized. Dealing with this dual identity, Abdullah discovers, is extraordinarily complex. Some longtime residents embrace these immigrants and see their arrival as an opportunity to reclaim their African heritage, while others see the immigrants as scornful invaders. In turn, African immigrants often take a particularly harsh view of their new neighbors, buying into the worst stereotypes about American-born blacks being lazy and incorrigible. And while there has long been a large Muslim presence in Harlem, and residents often see Islam as a force for social good, African-born Muslims see their Islamic identity disregarded by most of their neighbors. Abdullah weaves together the stories of these African Muslims to paint a fascinating portrait of a community's efforts to carve out space for itself in a new country. -- Book jacket.

In Harmonic Analysis and Applications, the analysis and synthesis of functions in terms of harmonics is presented in such a way as to demonstrate the vitality, power, elegance, usefulness, and the intricacy and simplicity of the subject. This book is about classical harmonic analysis - a textbook suitable for students, and an essay and general reference suitable for mathematicians, physicists, and others who use harmonic analysis. Throughout the book, material is provided for an upper level undergraduate course in harmonic analysis and some of its applications. In addition, the advanced material in Harmonic Analysis and Applications is well-suited for graduate courses. The course is outlined in Prologue I. This course material is excellent, not only for students, but also for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers as a general reference. Chapter 1 covers the Fourier analysis of integrable and square integrable (finite energy) functions on R. Chapter 2 of the text covers distribution theory, emphasizing the theory's useful vantage point for dealing with problems and general concepts from engineering, physics, and mathematics. Chapter 3 deals with Fourier series, including the Fourier analysis of finite and infinite sequences, as well as functions defined on finite intervals. The mathematical presentation, insightful perspectives, and numerous well-chosen examples and exercises in Harmonic Analysis and Applications make this book well worth having in your collection.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first coherent account of the area of analysis that involves the Heisenberg group, quantization, the Weyl calculus, the metaplectic representation, wave packets, and related concepts. This circle of ideas comes principally from mathematical physics, partial differential equations, and Fourier analysis, and it illuminates all these subjects. The principal features of the book are as follows: a thorough treatment of the representations of the Heisenberg group, their associated integral transforms, and the metaplectic representation; an exposition of the Weyl calculus of pseudodifferential operators, with emphasis on ideas coming from harmonic analysis and physics; a discussion of wave packet transforms and their applications; and a new development of Howe's theory of the oscillator semigroup.

Book excerpt: 'Written by a well-known expert in fractional stochastic calculus, this book offers a comprehensive overview of Gaussian analysis, with particular emphasis on nonlinear Gaussian functionals. In addition, it covers some topics that are not frequently encountered in other treatments, such as Littlewood-Paley-Stein, etc. This coverage makes the book a valuable addition to the literature. Many results presented in this book were hitherto available only in the research literature in the form of research papers by the author and his co-authors.'Mathematical Reviews ClippingsAnalysis of functions on the finite dimensional Euclidean space with respect to the Lebesgue measure is fundamental in mathematics. The extension to infinite dimension is a great challenge due to the lack of Lebesgue measure on infinite dimensional space. Instead the most popular measure used in infinite dimensional space is the Gaussian measure, which has been unified under the terminology of 'abstract Wiener space'.Out of the large amount of work on this topic, this book presents some fundamental results plus recent progress. We shall present some results on the Gaussian space itself such as the Brunn-Minkowski inequality, Small ball estimates, large tail estimates. The majority part of this book is devoted to the analysis of nonlinear functions on the Gaussian space. Derivative, Sobolev spaces are introduced, while the famous Poincaré inequality, logarithmic inequality, hypercontractive inequality, Meyer's inequality, Littlewood-Paley-Stein-Meyer theory are given in details. This book includes some basic material that cannot be found elsewhere that the author believes should be an integral part of the subject. For example, the book includes some interesting and important inequalities, the Littlewood-Paley-Stein-Meyer theory, and the Hörmander theorem. The book also includes some recent progress achieved by the author and collaborators on density convergence, numerical solutions, local times.

Book excerpt: This book illustrates the wide range of research subjects developed by the Italian research group in harmonic analysis, originally started by Alessandro Figà-Talamanca, to whom it is dedicated in the occasion of his retirement. In particular, it outlines some of the impressive ramifications of the mathematical developments that began when Figà-Talamanca brought the study of harmonic analysis to Italy; the research group that he nurtured has now expanded to cover many areas. Therefore the book is addressed not only to experts in harmonic analysis, summability of Fourier series and singular integrals, but also in potential theory, symmetric spaces, analysis and partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds, analysis on graphs, trees, buildings and discrete groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras, and even in far-reaching applications as for instance cellular automata and signal processing (low-discrepancy sampling, Gaussian noise).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a century ago, harmonic analysis entered a (still continuing) Golden Age, with the emergence of many great masters throughout Europe. They created a wealth of profound analytic methods, to be successfully exploited and further developed by succeeding generations. This flourishing of harmonic analysis is today as lively as ever, as the papers presented here demonstrate. In addition to its own ongoing internal development and its basic role in other areas of mathematics, physics and chemistry, financial analysis, medicine, and biological signal processing, harmonic analysis has made fundamental contributions to essentially all twentieth century technology-based human endeavours, including telephone, radio, television, radar, sonar, satellite communications, medical imaging, the Internet, and multimedia. This ubiquitous nature of the subject is amply illustrated. The book not only promotes the infusion of new mathematical tools into applied harmonic analysis, but also to fuel the development of applied mathematics by providing opportunities for young engineers, mathematicians and other scientists to learn more about problem areas in today's technology that might benefit from new mathematical insights.

Book excerpt: Generalized Functions, Volume 4: Applications of Harmonic Analysis is devoted to two general topics—developments in the theory of linear topological spaces and construction of harmonic analysis in n-dimensional Euclidean and infinite-dimensional spaces. This volume specifically discusses the bilinear functionals on countably normed spaces, Hilbert-Schmidt operators, and spectral analysis of operators in rigged Hilbert spaces. The general form of positive generalized functions on the space S, continuous positive-definite functions, and conditionally positive generalized functions are also deliberated. This publication likewise considers the mean of a generalized random process, multidimensional generalized random fields, simplest properties of cylinder sets, and definition of Gaussian measures. This book is beneficial to students, specialists, and researchers aiming to acquire knowledge of functional analysis.
