Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series Mechanics and Physics of Discrete Systems aims to provide a coherent picture of the modern development of discrete physical systems. Each volume will offer an orderly perspective of disciplines such as molecular dynamics, crystal mechanics and/or physics, dislocation, etc. Emphasized in particular are the fundamentals of mechanics and physics that play an essential role in engineering applications. Volume 1, Gauge Theory and Defects in Solids, presents a detailed development of a rational theory of the dynamics of defects and damage in solids. Solutions to field equations are used to determine stresses, dislocation densities and currents that arise from histories of loading of boundaries of bodies. Analysed in detail is a gauge theory with a gauge group that is not semi-simple, and whose action occurs at the classical macroscopic level. Yang-Mills theory is applied where the state variables are elastic displacements in solids, determination of mechanical and electromagnetic observables by choice of gauge conditions is demonstrated, and practices of classical dislocation theory are derived from first principles.
Book Synopsis Theory of Defects in Solids by : A. M. Stoneham
Download or read book Theory of Defects in Solids written by A. M. Stoneham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the theory of defects in solids, concentrating on the electronic structure of point defects in insulators and semiconductors. The relations between different approaches are described, and the predictions of the theory compared critically with experiment. The physical assumptions and approximations are emphasized. The book begins with the perfect solid, then reviews the main methods of calculating defect energy levels and wave functions. The calculation and observable defect properties is discussed, and finally, the theory is applied to a range of defects that are very different in nature. This book is intended for research workers and graduate students interested in solid-state physics. From reviews of the hardback: 'It is unique and of great value to all interested in the basic aspects of defects in solids.' Physics Today 'This is a particularly worthy book, one which has long been needed by the theoretician and experimentalist alike.' Nature

Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Progress in the Theory and Numerics of Configurational Mechanics by : Paul Steinmann

This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Con?gurational mechanics has attracted quite a bit of attention from various - search ?elds over the recent years/decades. Having been regarded in its infancy of the early years as a somewhat obscureand almost mystic ?eld of researchthat could only be understood by a happy few of insiders with a pronounced theoretical inc- nation, con?gurational mechanics has developed by now into a versatile tool that can be applied to a variety of problems. Since the seminal works of Eshelby a general notion of con?gurational - chanics has been developed and has successfully been applied to many pr- lems involving various types of defects in continuous media. The most pro- nent application is certainly the use of con?gurational forces in fracture - chanics. However, as con?gurational mechanics is related to arbitrary mat- ial inhomogeneities it has also very successfully been applied to many ma- rials science and engineering problems such as phase transitions and inelastic deformations. Also the modeling of materials with micro-structure evolution is an important ?eld, in which con?gurational mechanics can provide a better understanding of processes going on within the material. Besides these mechanically, physically, and chemically motivated applications, ideas from con?gurational mechanics are now increasingly applied within computational mechanics.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Generalized Continua by : Gérard A. Maugin
Download or read book Mechanics of Generalized Continua written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their 1909 publication Théorie des corps déformables, Eugène and François Cosserat made a historic contribution to materials science by establishing the fundamental principles of the mechanics of generalized continua. The chapters collected in this volume showcase the many areas of continuum mechanics that grew out of the foundational work of the Cosserat brothers. The included contributions provide a detailed survey of the most recent theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics and can serve as a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics and applied mathematics.
Book Synopsis Earthquake Source Asymmetry, Structural Media and Rotation Effects by : Roman Teisseyre
Download or read book Earthquake Source Asymmetry, Structural Media and Rotation Effects written by Roman Teisseyre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough book is the first to examine the rotational effects in earthquakes, a revolutionary concept in seismology. Existing models do no yet explain the significant rotational and twisting motions that occur during an earthquake and cause the failure of structures. The rotation and twist effects are investigated and described, and their consequences for designing tall buildings and other important structures are presented. This book will change the way the world views earthquakes.
Book Synopsis Deformation and Fracture of Solid-State Materials by : Sanichiro Yoshida
Download or read book Deformation and Fracture of Solid-State Materials written by Sanichiro Yoshida and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces a comprehensive theory of deformation and fracture to engineers and applied scientists. Here “comprehensive” means that the theory can describe all stages of deformation from elastic to plastic and plastic to fracturing stage on the same basis (equations). The comprehensive approach is possible because the theory is based on a fundamental physical principle called the local symmetry, or gauge invariance, as opposed to phenomenology. Professor Yoshida explains the gist of local symmetry (gauge invariance) intuitively so that engineers and applied physicists can digest it easily, rather than describing physical or mathematical details of the principle. The author also describes applications of the theory to practical engineering, such as nondestructive testing in particular, with the use of an optical interferometric technique called ESPI (Electronic Speckle-Pattern Interferometry). The book is not a manual of applications. Instead, it provides information on how to apply physical concepts to engineering applications.
Book Synopsis Material Inhomogeneities in Elasticity by : G.A. Maugin
Download or read book Material Inhomogeneities in Elasticity written by G.A. Maugin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self contained, this book presents a thorough introduction to the complementary notions of physical forces and material (or configurational) forces. All the required elements of continuum mechanics, deformation theory and differential geometry are also covered. This book will be a great help to many, whilst revealing to others a rather new facet of continuum mechanics in general, and elasticity in particular. An organized exposition of continuum mechanics on the material manifold is given which allows for the consideration of material inhomogeneities in their most appropriate framework. In such a frame the nonlinear elasticity of anisotropic inhomogenous materials appears to be a true field theory. Extensions to the cases of electroelasticity and magnetelasticity are then straightforward. In addition, this original approach provides systematic computational means for the evaluation of characteristic parameters which are useful in various branches of applied mechanics and mathematical physics. This is the case for path-independent integrals and energy-release rates in brittle fracture, the influence of electromagnetic fields on fracture criteria (such as in ceramics), the notion of momentum of electromagnetic fields in matter in optics, and the perturbation of solitons propagating in elastic dispersive systems.

Book Synopsis Micromechanics of Defects in Solids by : T. Mura
Download or read book Micromechanics of Defects in Solids written by T. Mura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

Book Synopsis Progress in Gauge Field Theory by : G. 't Hooft
Download or read book Progress in Gauge Field Theory written by G. 't Hooft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of gauge theory for elementary particle physics is by now firmly established. Recent experiments have yielded convincing evidence for the existence of intermediate bosons, the carriers of the electroweak gauge force, as well as for the presence of gluons, the carriers of the strong gauge force, in hadronic interactions. For the gauge theory of strong interactions, however, a number of important theoretical problems remain to be definitely resolved. They include the quark confinement problem, the quantitative study of the hadron mass spectrum as well as the role of topology in quantum gauge field theory. These problems require for their solution the development and application of non-perturbative methods in quantum gauge field theory. These problems, and their non-perturbative analysis, formed the central interest of the 1983 Cargese summer institute on "Progress in Gauge Field Theory. " In this sense it was a natural sequel to the 1919 Cargese summer institute on "Recent Developments in Gauge Theories. " Lattice gauge theory provides a systematic framework for the investigation of non-perturbative quantum effects. Accordingly, a large number of lectures dealt with lattice gauge theory. Following a systematic introduction to the subject, the renormalization group method was developed both as a rigorous tool for fundamental questions, and in the block-spin formulation, the computations by Monte Carlo programs. A detailed analysis was presented of the problems encountered in computer simulations. Results obtained by this method on the mass spectrum were reviewed.
Book Synopsis Dislocation Theory by : David J. Fisher
Download or read book Dislocation Theory written by David J. Fisher and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dislocation Theory covers the research into this fascinating field which was reported in the period: 1995-1999. The coverage is limited to purely theoretical work; more practical aspects having certainly been covered by the relevant DDF volumes during that period. As indicated above, the widest possible range of dislocation phenomena has been included; with the exception of liquid crystal defects. But the coverage also includes that close relative of the dislocation; the disclination.
