Book excerpt: Cancer is the leading cause of death in many countries, and digestive cancer is one of the most common types of neoplasms. Advances in research on the management of digestive cancer therefore represent an important contribution to the welfare of humankind throughout the world. The VICC Kyoto International Symposium on Recent Advances in the Management of Digestive Cancer was held in Kyoto from March 31 to April 2, 1993 under the presidency of Dr. T. Takahashi of the Kyoto Prefectural Vniversity of Medicine. At this event, leading researchers and clinicians presented new findings and the latest results of clinical trials concerning digestive cancers. The VICC President and other members of the Executive Committee of the VICC also gave speeches on their own fields, and more than 1000 participants from 28 countries were very well received. This book presents the proceedings of this symposium. In addition to 30 selected papers presented at special lectures and symposia by invited speakers, this book contains 230 free papers presented at poster sessions during this conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cases of intestinal anisakiasis, caused by infestation with Anisakis simplex larva, are being increasingly reported in both Europe and the United States. The most information about this affliction, however, comes from Japan, where specialists have greater experience in its diagnosis and treatment. This book is based on approximately 600 cases of intestinal anisakiasis in Japan and gives important new findings on the subject. Specific topics include the changes in infection rates among fish, the clinical manifestation of intestinal anisakiasis, the identification of Anisakis larva with genetic techniques, echographic and laparographic findings, and X-ray findings. The discussion of serological diagnosis includes the detection of Anisakis-specific IgG and IgE antibodies in patients' sera by using monoclonal antibodies against the larva.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains abstracts of most of the significant scientific literature dealing with prostaglandins published between 1906~when certain biologically active tissue extracts first stimulated the speculation of researchers~and 1970~when the use of prostaglandins for experimental control of fertility and induction of labor had been reported from six countries. Of the more than 4000 articles now identified which were published between 1906 and 1972, approximately half had appeared in print by the end of 1970. A second volume will cover the material printed in 1971 and 1972 with special emphasis on the role of prostaglandins in reproductive physiology. The reasons for publishing this considerable compilation of data are twofold. On the one hand, prosta· glandins, a family of fatty acid derivatives first identified in human semen, have been shown to have great and varied effects on all aspects of human physiology due to activity at the cellular level as mediators in the formation of cyclic AMP. The study of prostaglandins is considered today one of the most promising fields in the biological sciences. Secondly, as is now recognized, prostaglandins play an important role in reproduction, influencing both male and female fertility. It is hoped that this volume will make the results of early prostaglandin research available to investigators throughout the world, including especially those in developing coun· tries who may not have easy access to such material.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a practical and comprehensive account of the management of diarrhea and constipation in the elderly. These common disorders are not only a burden in themselves but are often manifestations of a more serious underlying illness; thus, effective diagnosis and treatment are essential to improve quality of life. The chapters include updates on pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment, and highlight the vulnerability of the elderly to diarrhea and its complications. The etiology of diarrhea is explained, including infections of the gastrointestinal tract, and systemic diseases of which it is a symptom. The authors represent diverse disciplines: immunology, physiology, microbiology, nutrition, and psychiatry. The book is aimed at geriatricians, general practitioners, gastroenterologists, and allied health workers.
