Book excerpt: Ever since Congo was handed to Leopold II, the humanitarian king of Belgium in the late 19th century, a trickle of reports on human rights abuse have been coming down from the dense jungles. After recent media attention back home, the British government has asked Roger Casement, their representative in the African free state, to look into these claims. He travels deep into Congo’s interior, to the shores of Lake Mantumba, where a local man named Nsala helps him expose the truth while a Belgian official Gaspard Bunschoten tries his best to maintain an illusion that is doomed to fall apart.

Book excerpt: The historical book "Stray Pearls: Memoirs of Margaret De Ribaumont, Viscountess of Bellaise" by Charlotte Yonge transports readers to 16th-century France. The heroine and narrator Margaret De Ribaumont's memoirs provide a vivid picture of life during the turbulent period of religious conflict and political intrigue in the book. Readers follow Margaret's trip as she leaves behind her beautiful upbringing in the French countryside and arrives to the lavish and perilous court of King Henry III as the narrative progresses. She navigates love, grief, and the nuances of her own conflicted allegiance between the Catholic and Huguenot groups as she goes. Readers see significant historical occurrences like the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre via Margaret's eyes and meet lovable people who influence her future. Readers are transported to a bygone period when beauty and violence coexist because to Charlotte Yonge's diligent research and powerful writing. The work examines themes of religion, love, responsibility, and the human spirit's resiliency in the face of difficulty. The emotional and introspective narrative voice of Margaret offers a close-up view of the significant historical events taking place all around her. "Stray Pearls" offers readers an engrossing look into the complicated and interesting world of 16th-century France via a gripping blending of romance, history, and coming-of-age narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events—with their embrace of radical individualism and antiauthoritarianism—triggered a break from the past, and the women’s movement split into two strands. One became universalist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women’s claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. Yet French women have more often donned the mantle of particularism, advancing their contributions as mothers to prove their worth as citizens, than they have thrown it off, claiming absolute equality. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, illustrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity.

Book excerpt: The first standalone in C.J. Duggan's addictive HEART OF THE CITY series - a sassy, sexy romance from the internationally bestselling author of the SUMMER and PARADISE series. 'You're breaking up with me!' He was silent. 'In Paris.' Eyes dropping. 'Under the Eiffel-fucking-Tower!' I screamed. Twenty-five-year-old Claire Shorten had looked forward to spending a romantic weekend in Paris for as long as she could remember, and now it was here - three blissful days of strolling through cobbled streets arm-in-arm with her beloved, eating copious amounts of baked goods and soaking up the culture through each and every pore of her body. Well, at least, that was how she'd pictured it . . . Even after her boyfriend dumps her rather unceremoniously in the most romantic place on earth, Claire is determined not to give up on her dream altogether - with or without a boyfriend. She finds herself a job in the kitchen of a small hotel; Michelin-starred it most certainly is not, but somehow Claire makes a place for herself amidst the dirty dishes and the foreign misfits who run the place. When the restaurant attracts the attention of the enigmatic - if not slightly terrifying - tycoon Louis Delarue, and Claire manages to survive his high-powered business luncheon from hell, she knows that she can survive anything, surely. But all bets are off when Louis makes a game-changing decision: he's coming back for a second course . . . PRAISE FOR C.J. DUGGAN'S HEART OF THE CITY SERIES: 'Fun and sexy ...
