Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on an uncooled 20,000lb-thrust gaseous-H and LOX rocket engine over a range of chamber pressure from 45 to 300 psia and oxidant-fuel ratio from 2 to 7. Combustion dead times were measured and compared with dead times calculated from frequency data for two assumed combustion models. Measured combustion dead time decreased with increasing chamber pressure at constant oxidant-fuel ratio or LOX injection velocity. This dead time also decreased with oxidant-fuel ratio at constant chamber pressure or O injection velocity. For the engine model where combustion dead time was considered to be the inverse of twice the measured chamberpressure frequency, only a fair agreement with the measured dead time was obtained. When the measured chamber-pressure frequencies were corrected for gas-dynamics effects in terms of the gas residence time, close agreement with the measured dead times was obtained. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical rocket performance data for the propellant combination of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are presented in convenient graphical forms to permit rapid determination of specific impulse, vacuum specific impulse, and characteristic velocity. Data are presented for both frozen and equilibrium composition during expansion for chamber pressures of 15, 30, 60, 150, 300, 600, 900 and 1200 pounds per square inch absolute over a wide range of percent fuel from approximately 8 to 34 and area ratios to approximately 300. For rapid calculation of the theoretical nozzle performance with over- or under- expansion, separated flow, and introduction of propellants at different initial conditions or heat loss from the combustion chamber, the following theoretical data are also presented: combustion-chamber temperature, nozzle-exit temperature, and the ratio of chamber-pressure to nozzle-exit pressure. An easy method is given for estimating theoretical specific impulse at chamber pressures other than those presented.

Book excerpt: Cold flow experiments with a full-size SSME preburner shear coaxial injector element using liquid and gaseous nitrogen at pressures up to 4 MPa showed that the intact liquid core decreased in length with increasing chamber pressure up to the critical pressure, after which it increased in length. Increasing the liquid to gas mass flow rate ratio resulted in an increase in the length of the liquid core. LDV measurements showed flow recirculation downstream of the LOX post. Results from a linearized model of the injector, combustion and vaporization processes compared well to unsteady pressure measurements made during liquid oxygen/gaseous hydrogen hot-fire tests. Vaporization and combustion of liquid droplets in both subcritical and supercritical environments have been studied systematically. A variety of liquid propellants and propellant simulants, including hydrobon and cryogenic fluids, in both steady and oscillatory environments were treated numerically. Because the model allows solutions from first principles, a systematic examination of the droplet behavior over wide ranges of pressure, temperuture, and ambient flow velocity is made possible. Results can not only enhance the basic understanding of the problem, but can also serve as a basis for establishing droplet vaporization and combustion correlations for the study of liquid rocitet engine combustion, performance, and stability. Book excerpt: Annotation Since the invention of the V-2 rocket during World War II, combustion instabilities have been recognized as one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid propellant rocket engines. This book is the first published in the United States on the subject since NASA's Liquid Rocket Combustion Instability (NASA SP-194) in 1972. In this book, experts cover four major subject areas: engine phenomenology and case studies, fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability, combustion instability analysis, and engine and component testing. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of technical information from Russia and China--a first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic oscillations were induced in a sub-scale liquid rocket engine that burned liquid oxygen and gaseous hydrogen as propellants. The oscillations in the chamber were forced by a rotating gear just downstream of the nozzle throat. High frequency data was acquired for pressure and velocity via a pressure transducer and a magnetic flowmeter. The magnetic flowmeter obtains the acoustic gas velocity by measuring the voltage induced by the ionized combustion products moving through an externally imposed magnetic field. A cross correlation was performed on the velocity and pressure signals to determine the amplitude and phase difference of the two signals.
