Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1913, Clarence Floyd Hirshfield's book Gas Engines for the Farm was likely unique upon its release. The book is intended to be a buyer's manual to be used by farmer's considering the purchases of a gas engine. As mechanical power would have been a relatively new advantage for a farmer in 1913, literature on the subject was presumably scarce, and thus this book was intended to fill that gap. Early chapters cover the basics of a gas-powered engine, including appropriate fuels and the operational principles and design of an internal combustion engine. Comparisons are made between the steam engine and the gas-powered engine in order to illuminate some of the important differences. Later chapters wade more deeply into the specifics of an engine's operation and upkeep, presenting information on the cooling system, carburetors, the ignition apparatus, mufflers, and more. This volume is truly a treasure chest of early information on gas-powered farm equipment. The final chapters of the book are essentially the buyer's guide. Hirshfeld identifies desirable features of construction, the brands that one should consider, and finally examines how to best balance power, speed, and price. There is no doubt that one would be better prepared to make a large purchase after reading this manual. Read today, this book is primarily a pleasant trip back in time. While the fundamentals of the internal combustion engine have not changed in 100 years, the advancements in power and speed have been significant. The early chapters of this book are thus still relevant today; however, the latter chapters are most definitely out of date. Gas Engines for the Farm is recommended for all rural historians, or anybody simply looking to take a trip back in time to when gas powered engines were first making their presence felt on the farms across America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Motors: Steam and Gas Engines, Hydraulic and Electric Motors Windmills In preparing this book it has been the intention to include the fundamental principles governing the construction, working and management of motors which are suitable for farm use. The motors treated include steam engines, gas and oil engines, traction engines, automobiles, water motors, windmills and electric motors. The method followed in each chapter was to give: 1. the fundamental principles underlying the particular motor, 2. the principal parts of the motor, 3. auxiliary parts, 4. uses to which the particular type of motor is adapted, 5. selection, erection and management of the different machines. While this book was prepared primarily as a text-book for students in agricultural engineering, the subject matter is so presented that it will be of equal value to farmers and to operators of various kinds of engines and motors. Much practical information is included regarding steam, gas and electricity, and the text is illustrated with over 275 cuts. Some space is devoted to the more refined methods used in engineering practice for improving the economy of various motors. While many of these methods are not used at the present time in connection with farm motors, it is the opinion of the author that a knowledge of the best engineering practice is not only of considerable educational value, but will lead to the more perfect manipulation of the simple farm motors. The successful rural engineer of the near future will be the man that applies proven engineering to the machinery and constructions used on the farm. The author is particularly indebted in the preparation of this book to Professors E. B. McCormick, M. R. Bowerman, R. A. Seaton, and W .W. Carlson, of the Kansas State Agricultural College; to Professors Allen & Bursley of the University of Michigan; and to Mr. S. Yesner of Boston, Mass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas Engine Theory and Design IT has been the aim of the author to prepare a book for all who are interested in gas engines - students, draughts men, engineers, as well as the men who operate gas engines of any kind, and wish to become better acquainted with the theory and the why of many things. The book should be of special interest to the technical student, and was, in fact, first prepared for the engineering classes at the Michigan Agricultural College, since no suit able text - book could be found. The reading-matter throughout has been arranged care fully and with a definite object in view. The large number of figures illustrating the text have been made as simple as possible. It has also been the aim of the author to make the treatment clear and concise, and for this reason every paragraph should be studied - not merely read over. It is hoped that this book will enable every earnest stu dent to acquire a foundation upon which he may eventually build a broad and comprehensive knowledge of the subject. Acknowledgment is due Professor L. L. Appleyard for his kindly criticism and assistance in reading the proofs. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which.
