Some of these problems (e.g., the pur ity of natural waters and air) have attracted the attention not only of specialists but also of society generally. It would be impossible to do research on trace components and contaminants if we did not have reliable rapid and sensitive methods of determining substances present in mixtures in minute concentrations. Gas chromatography is an effective method of purity testing. This book deals with analysis for trace components, together with the basic methods of gas chromatography that are used for the purpose. We have tried to reflect here the principal papers in this area appearing in the foreign literature and in Rus sian. Weare indebted to Plenum Pre~'B for the opportunity of pre senting this edition. Book excerpt: The characteristics of gas chromatography peaks arising from various compounds when the column flow is reversed has been studied. It is shown that all compounds are eluted after reversal of the flow with the peak maximum at a time equal to or less than the time of flow reversal. The half width of the reverse peak is determined by a constant related to the number of plates in the column, and the square root of twice the time of flow reversal multiplied by the square root of the time of emergence of the compound when run in the forward direction. The method appears applicable to the concentration of trace high boiling impurities in any matrix in which the bulk components can be rapidly eluted through a suitable column.

Impurities in concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm may be detected. Using reproducible and equal volume injections, quantitative results are determined by comparing the detector response obtained for known levels of some impurity in a properly prepared standard blend with the detector response obtained for the impurities in a comparable sample.

A custom interface introduced the liquid sample to the chromatography. This was followed by rapid chromatographic analysis. Characteristics of the analysis include response times less than one minute and automated data processing. Analytes were chosen based on their known presence in the recycle water streams of semiconductor manufacturers and their potential to reduce process yield. These include acetone, isopropanol, butyl acetate, ethyl benzene, p-xylene, methyl ethyl ketone and 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate. Detection limits below 20 ppb were demonstrated for all analytes and quantitative analysis with limited speciation was shown for multianalyte mixtures. Results are discussed with respect to the potential for on-line liquid process monitoring by this method.

There is growing interest in developing alternative feedstocks for the eventual production of high-quality turbine engine fuels. The major analytical technique for separating the chemical constituents and analyzing fuels and synfuel feedstocks is high-resolution gas chromatography (HRGC), and the extreme chemical complexity of these hydrocarbon mixtures continues to challenge even the most sophisticated HRGC techniques. Therefore, the principal objective of this research was to identify and evaluate advanced HRGC instrumental procedures which show potential for improving the analysis of hydrocarbon jet fuels and various feedstocks. A gas chromatograph can be viewed as an assembly of individual components arranged to form a time invariant linear system. Accordingly, a systems approach has been used in this investigation to study, refine, and modify HRGC instrumentation.
