Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas Chemists Handbook, 1916 The magnitude and delicacy of this work is fully realized and this is presented primarily as'a progress report. In time, the Institute would be well repaid for the expense incurred in the publication of such a handbook by the uniformity of practice that would result from the adoption of these methods and by the convenience to the gas Chemist of having recognized standard methods pertaining to the industry collected in one convenient publication. While this first issue of the Handbook was a very decided step in the right direction, it was recognized that much was still to be accomplished and the continuance of the work de volved upon the 1915 Committee on Chemical 'tests. This Committee was unable to do more than report satisfactory progress at the 1915 meeting of the Institute and the same Committee was re-appointed to continue the revision over 1916. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While strides are being made in the research and development of environmentally acceptable and more sustainable alternative fuels—including efforts to reduce emissions of air pollutants associated with combustion processes from electric power generation and vehicular transportation—fossil fuel resources are limited and may soon be on the verge of depletion in the near future. Measuring the correlation between quality of life, energy consumption, and the efficient utilization of energy, the Handbook of Alternative Fuel Technologies, Second Edition thoroughly examines the science and technology of alternative fuels and their processing technologies. It focuses specifically on environmental, technoeconomic, and socioeconomic issues associated with the use of alternative energy sources, such as sustainability, applicable technologies, modes of utilization, and impacts on society. Written with research and development scientists and engineers in mind, the material in this handbook provides a detailed description and an assessment of available and feasible technologies, environmental health and safety issues, governmental regulations, and issues and agendas for R&D. It also includes alternative energy networks for production, distribution, and consumption. What’s New in This Edition: Contains several new chapters of emerging interest and updates various chapters throughout Includes coverage of coal gasification and liquefaction, hydrogen technology and safety, shale fuel by hydraulic fracturing, ethanol from lignocellulosics, biodiesel, algae fuels, and energy from waste products Covers statistics, current concerns, and future trends A single-volume complete reference, the Handbook of Alternative Fuel Technologies, Second Edition contains relevant information on chemistry, technology, and novel approaches, as well as scientific foundations for further enhancements and breakthroughs. In addition to its purposes as a handbook for practicing scientists and engineers, it can also be used as a textbook or as a reference book on fuel science and engineering, energy and environment, chemical process design, and energy and environmental policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Technical Gas-Analysis: Containing Concise Instructions for Carrying Out Gas-Analytical Methods of Proved Utility The field first opened out by Winkler has been very successfully cultivated by other chemists; and it is now quite usual, at any rate in Germany, to perform technical gas-analyses, not merely in chemical works, but for testing the efficiency of steam-boiler furnaces and such purposes. In England some of these pro cesses have also been introduced; but they are not as yet known and appreciated to the same extent as abroad. Hence it may not be unwelcome to English chemists to have a translation of a short treatise, just published by Winkler, which is primarily intended for teaching purposes - that is, for the use of teachers and students in public laboratories - but which likewise serves as a guide and handy book to other chemists wishing to make themselves acquainted with the subject. This treatise is not intended, as was its predecessor, to furnish a complete enumera tion of all apparatus hitherto proposed for technical gas-analysis, but merely to give representative examples of each kind of apparatus, embracing all the divisions of this branch of Chemistry.
