Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the use of praise and blame in Greek tragedy in relation to heroic identity, Kate Cook demonstrates that the distribution of praise and blame, a significant social function of archaic and classical poetry, also plays a key role in Greek tragedy. Both concepts are a central part of the discourse surrounding the identity of male heroic figures in tragedy, and thus are essential for understanding a range of tragedies in their literary and social contexts. In the tragic genre, the destructive or dangerous aspects of the process of kleos (glory) are explored, and the distribution of praise and blame becomes a way of destabilising identity and conflict between individuals in democratic Athens. The first half of this book shows the kinds of conflicts generated by 'heroes' who seek after one kind of praise in tragedy, but face other characters or choruses who refuse to grant the praise discourses they desire. The second half examines what happens when female speakers engage in the production of these discourses, particularly the wives and mothers of heroic figures, who often refuse to contribute to the production of praise and positive kleos for these men. Praise and Blame in Greek Tragedy therefore demonstrates how a focus on this poetically significant topic can generate new readings of well-known tragedies, and develops a new approach to both male heroic identity and women's speech in tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging in the medieval period, chivalry embodied ideals that elite warriors cherished and practices that formed their profession. In this major new overview, Richard Kaeuper examines how chivalry made sense of violence and war, making it tolerable for elite fighters rather than non-knightly or sub-knightly populations. He discusses how chivalry buttressed status and profession, shaped active piety, and fostered intense warrior attachments and heterosexual relationships. Though showing regional and chronological variations, chivalry at its core enshrined the practice of prowess in securing honor, with this process significantly blessed by religion. Both kingship and church authority sought to direct the great force of chivalry and, despite tensions, finally came to terms with rising knightly status and a burgeoning military role. Kaeuper engages with a wide range of evidence in his analysis, drawing on the chivalric literature, manuscript illumination, and sermon exempla and moral tales.

Book excerpt: Dawn Escoto has always loved poetry. She grew up on it—hearing readings as well as reading, memorizing, and writing poetry. Her mother taught her to appreciate the nineteenth-century American poets, especially Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As an adult, Emily Dickinson became one of her favorites. But Escoto doesn’t really copy any particular poet; instead, she studies techniques from various writers and has created her own voice. Poetry runs through her veins. All of her siblings, along with cousins on both sides of the family, write poetry. She has published three volumes of poems on endangered species, under the title Going, Going, Gone. Her journey as a poet began at age eight and has continued throughout her life. Since 1994 she has written over forty collections, with emphases on hymns; psalms set to music; words of encouragement; celebration of holidays and special occasions; synopses of sermons; tributes to heroes, family, and friends; endangered animals; flowers and birds; limericks; and more. This volume of poems contains examples from Garlands of Grace, Millennial Messages, Divine Sentiments, Then Sings My Soul, New Testament Psalms, New Wine, Old Wineskins, Children’s Choruses, and Tributes to Courage. It is her hope that these poems will draw you heavenward in worship of the One she exalts in her life and in her writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeing through Texts invites us into the world of south Indian Hinduism through a study of 100 songs of the Tiruvāymoli, the great masterpiece of the ninth-century Hindu saint Saṭkōpan. These unique songs, dedicated to the Hindu god Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa, lead us through poetic and imaginative, philosophical and moral reflections on the nature of the self and the world, ancient myths and temple worship, and the mystical moods of longing, desire, and love in which one seeks, loses, and finds again the God who loves us first. The book is also a study of the interpretation of the Tiruvāymoli in the traditional Hindu Śrivaiṣṇava commentaries of the twelfth-fourteenth centuries, as well as a comparative theological study which explores the implication of the songs and their commentaries for readers from outside the Śrivaiṣṇava tradition.
