Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if I told you we would have to eat eight oranges today to get the same amount of vitamin C our grandparents received from just one orange? Fruit and vegetables are picked when slightly unripe, sprayed with chemicals, waxed, boxed, stacked on pallets and kept in a cold store for up to 12 months. So when you think you’re eating healthily and buying ‘fresh’ food, you are possibly buying fruit that was picked over a year ago. The longer produce is in storage the more its nutritional value deteriorates. Comparing the nutritional data of produce over the last 50 years shows a reliable decline in the amount of protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamins and other micronutrients. Additionally, overseas shipping causes air pollution, affecting the health of humans, animals, and the environment. The recent pandemic showed us that in uncertain times, grocery stores may not have everything your family needs. But what if there was a way to grow nutritious fruits and vegetables right from your own backyard garden and lessen your dependence on corporations? And what if it was surprisingly achievable? The ability to use the Earth’s natural resources is indispensable. In The Self-Sufficient Garden, you’ll learn: - The process of planning a garden even if you don’t live in an ideal climate, don’t have enough space or have no money to spare - Different types of gardening, and their pros and cons, so you can determine what fits your lifestyle and needs - The importance of soil science and why healthier soil creates healthier people - The little-known basics of gardening, how to maximize your yields, extend your growing season and set up an irrigation system to benefit your garden and save you time - Organic pest control techniques to keep your plants safe and grow healthier crops - How to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and trees and the process of crop rotation and remineralization to further help the environment - How to start your own seeds, conserve natural resources and make your own compost – all things that reduce your carbon footprint. Plus much more. Even if you’ve never made your hands dirty, don’t know how to hold a trowel or only have a balcony or a patio, you can still create an abundant garden and make a difference. You can grow your own food and start your self-sufficiency journey today!

Book excerpt: Row by row - maximize your harvest and feed your soil by developing a customized plan for your garden Everyone loves to prepare a meal with ingredients fresh from their own garden. But for most of us, no matter how plentiful our harvest, homegrown produce comprises only a fraction of what we eat. And while many gardening guides will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about individual crops, few tackle the more involved task of helping you maximize the percentage of your diet you grow yourself. Grow a Sustainable Diet will help you develop a comprehensive, customized garden plan to produce the maximum number of calories and nutrients from any available space. Avoid arriving in August buried under a mountain of kale or zucchini (and not much else) by making thoughtful choices at the planning stage, focusing on dietary staples and key nutrients. Learn how to calculate: Which food and cover crops are best for your specific requirements How many seeds and plants of each variety you should sow What and when to plant, harvest and replant for maximum yield. Focusing on permaculture principles, biointensive gardening methods, getting food to the table with minimum fossil fuel input, and growing crops that sustain both you and your soil, this complete guide is a must-read for anyone working toward food self-sufficiency for themselves or their family.

Do you find it a must to wash your veggies properly before eating them? Are pesticides in fruits and vegetables a constant thing on your mind while walking through the supermarket aisles? Do you spend time checking the labels before buying your greens to ensure you are making healthy choices? The problem is, labels are just labels at the end of the day. After consumer surveys revealed that the perception of healthfulness is a key driver of food choices, the food industry started doing everything to deliberately mislead customers with confusing labels. Have you ever fallen for catchwords such as "whole grain", "organic", "natural" and "no cholesterol"? But what's really inside? Fact is, you've been fooled more than once and there is only one way to avoid consuming the poisonous cocktail of pesticides in supermarket crops: Backyard Gardening. Imagine growing your favorite vegetables just a few meters away from your house, ready to be picked whenever you want. While the thought of it alone might be absurd, or almost close to being impossible, you will be surprised what a few months can do, to make it happen. In Backyard Gardening, you will discover: The principles of organic farming, and how to reap the best results How you can let your garden work for you, instead of the other way around Ways for how you can create healthier fertilizers, without spending a single cent Which particular insect you should never kill and how it can actually strengthen your crop Why plants and humans are more alike than you think and how this one insight prevents your plants from dying How this one simple trick will cut your expenses in half and save you more than 7 hours of work per week A step-by-step guide on how you can effectively create healthier soil for your crops to thrive The tried-and-tested methods of managing pests without having to succumb to commonly used pesticides And much more. How many times have you told yourself that you want to start your own organic garden, but then thought you don't have the time or space for it? Don't worry. Even if you are living in a 25m2 student apartment with a 4m2 balcony, it is easy to grow fruits and vegetables to suit outdoor areas of any size. Take the example of a tomato plant. A time investment of 6 minutes per week over 12 weeks is enough to grow, raise, and harvest produce from your own plant! Don't leave any stone unturned to make sure your kids and your family eat healthy, fresh foods every single day just because you are afraid of learning a new craft. Book excerpt: ** COLOR EDITION ** Do you want to discover a scientific technique for building your own hydroponic garden? Then keep reading... Hydroponics is a means of growing plants without soil. It makes use of nutrient-rich water or a nutrient solution as well as techniques that allow the plant to grow. You can also use sand or gravel, with added nutrients. In this chapter, you are going to learn the history of the growing art that we call hydroponics. You will also learn about some of its practical uses throughout history. Traditionally, the soil is used to grow plants. It was thought that soil was necessary since plants started out in the earth, with nutrient-rich soils like the strawberry plants that were first grown in the wild before being cultivated for gardens. At some point in history, it was discovered that the soil was not necessary for the growing process. Rather, the role of soil is to act as a reservoir to hold the nutrients that a plant needs in order to grow. Crops grown hydroponically, according to studies, grow faster and healthier and are better than crops grown on soil; this is because they would not have to go through a lot of disadvantages that the soil may present, such as; situations of a break out of a soil-borne disease in the area, the struggle to have to push its way through the soil during germination, the attack from organism and pests that live in the soil. And of course, the plants in hydroponic systems do not have to 'hustle' for nutrients and water because this is basically what they are planted in, in hydroponic systems-water-based mineral nutrient solutions. Hydroponics also helps you save water, which sounds a bit strange when you think of water is essential for this process. Usually, it's every alternate day so that the soil soaks up the water and is transported to the roots. That sounds fine, doesn't it? But that's only a portion of the big picture. Some of the water is bound to seep out of the container, some of it evaporates, and a portion of it seeps further into the soil beyond the plant's roots. So, in practice, the plant essentially only uses up a small portion of the water. Hydroponics uses a simple recirculating mechanism that ensures that the water is fully soaked up by the roots. It means that the portion of water that isn't absorbed by the plant is directly sent to the reservoir. The same water from the reservoir is later pumped up to the plants. Since the reservoir is shut tight, there is no chance for the water to evaporate, and it certainly will not seep out of the bottom of the container. You can save around 80% of the water by switching to hydroponics instead of using regular soil gardening. This book covers the following topics: Equipment Hydroponic Growing System Plant necessities Best plant for hydroponics Pest and disease Choosing the right site for your garden Maintenance of your hydroponic garden And Much More! Do not get scared; hydroponic gardening is not as complicated, tricky, and demanding as your mind is about to convince you that it is; on the contrary, it is very simple! And this is what this book is about-to enlighten you and get you started on having your own hydroponic garden. Ready to get started? Click "Buy Now"!
