Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gardening in California, Landscape and Flower This handbook is respectfully submitted to gardeners in California, amateur and professional, as supplementary to, and a modification of those excellent treatises and encyclopedias on Landscape and Flower Gardening which have become the authorities and text-books on the subject, but which were written for the conditions of climate and season in European countries and the Eastern States of our own land. In California these conditions are so different, and the possibilities of the culture and development of trees, shrubs and flowers are so much greater than in Europe or any other of the United States of America, that our gardeners have had to do a great deal of original investigation and experimental work. The results of such investigation and work by the writer are recorded in these pages. The difference referred to is well illustrated by the universally loved Pansy which, in the Eastern States, is sown in February, flowering in May or June, while in California it is sown in July and flowers from November to May, and also by the Acacia which, in the East, is grown in pot in the conservatory, protected by glass and heated by artificial heat, whereas, in our State, it grows, a handsome tree, in any soil in the open air and flowers in midwinter. Although it has been found necessary to treat of the conservatory to a certain extent, yet this has been done only as subsidiary to the main purpose of the book, the treatment, in the conservatory, of plants which are not hardy in the open air locally, being the same here as in any other part of the country. It should, however, be kept in view that hundreds of trees, shrubs and flowers, which cannot possibly exist, in the open air, in those parts of the United States and Europe where the climatic conditions are more harsh than here, flourish and give grand effects out of doors in California. Book excerpt: This book takes the "houseplant look" outside by exploring the wonders of lush, green, foliage plants that are hardy in the garden to -10F. Unlike flowers that fade, these big-leaved, larger-than-life plants provide year-round impact for decades and small, urban gardens that are well protected are the perfect home for them. Expert horticulturist Philip Oostenbrink has been an enthusiastic grower for years and in this book recommends the best hardy, foliage plants for texture, leaf shape, and color. Jungle gardens can be shady and immersive, sunny and open or somewhere in between and there are plants suited to all these environments including purple-leaved bananas, desert-island palms, spiky agaves, architectural Pseudopanax, and succulents such as Echeveria and Aeonium. Beautiful special photography by Sarah Cuttle features standout jungle gardens that demonstrate how to combine foliage plants effectively and create backdrops and container displays that make the plants pop. This book is the irresistible next step for all houseplant addicts and for all who are ready to embark on their very own jungle adventure.

Book excerpt: It may be the Golden State, but your garden can be any color you want it to be. California is already famous as one of the world's leading fruit and vegetable producers--but a glance at a valley oak or California buckwheat is just a small glimpse of the native plants the state has to offer the home gardener. Written by Alameda resident and longtime gardening journalist Claire Splan, California Month-by-Month Gardening is the sister manual to our California Getting Started Garden Guide. Inside, Splan dedicates a thoroughly detailed chapter to each month of the year, telling you what species you should consider planting, precisely when you should plant them, and how to care for them for maximum health. Within each month are recommendations for annuals, bulbs, lawns (and lawn alternatives), natives, perennials, roses, shrubs, trees, vines, and groundcovers. An introductory overview of California's microclimates and soil types, along with a primer on general gardening techniques and a color-coded USDA zone map, prepares you to make your best effort as a gardener in California. Splan's instructions go much further than just the basics, as you learn how to plan, plant, care for, water, fertilize, and troubleshoot your diverse garden spaces during every single month of the year. Fully illustrated with beautiful color photography of the "how to" steps and plants, California Month-by-Month Gardening keeps your garden prosperous through all types of California weather and terrain. For our full introduction to gardening in California, we also recommend companion books California Getting Started Garden Guide and California Fruit & Vegetable Gardening.
