Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden and Forest, 1900, Vol. 3: A Journal of Horticulture, Landscape Art and Forestry Plants of this species may be grown either in pots or has kets, but the latter are preferable, as, when wires are attached, the plants can be hung nearer the glass, and thus obtain a clearer light. Plenty of heat and moisture are essential to them during the season of growth, and they may be freely watered and syringed. The flowers appear on the growing stems, and when they have disappeared it is generally a sign that growth has almost ceased, and the plants should then be placed in a slightly cooler house to rest for two or three months, only receiving water at intervals in order to keep the growths from shriveling. A compost of rough fibrous peat, with a little Sphagnum, is very suitable for them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden and Forest, 1889, Vol. 2: A Journal of Horticulture, Landscape Art and Forestry Many of these trees at the time of the formation of the gardens were extremely rare or quite unknown in France. On the site of what used to be the botanic garden, where some of the earliest experiments in the naturalization of foreign plants were made in France, is now a pretty flower-garden, which contains a good collection of Ameri can plants - Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Andromedas, Kal mias and Magnolias. Two fine Gingko trees, one of which is about forty feet high, stand here, and are, I believe, the oldest in France, having been planted about 1789. A fine cut-leaved Beech, a curious but handsome Weeping Sophora and a splendid Pyramidal Oak make up the more remarkable specimens in this part of the grounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden and Forest, Vol. 7: A Journal of Horticulture, Landscape Art and Forestry; January to December, 1894 We are glad to reprint this advice, not only because it is the best which could be given with regard to the special case in view, but because it is a cheering proof that correct ideas as to the relation between monuments of any kind and their surroundings are rapidly gaining ground among members of the architectural profession, where, as we have often said before, their prevalence is especially desirable. It is also a renewed proof of the esteem in which the art of landscape-design is held by the best architects and _of the growing spirit of cordiality and co - operation between the two professions.
