Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garcia Bend (HB) By: Frank Tedrow II This is a story about much more than a place. It’s a story about a group of friends who found the perfect place to party. It’s about an iconic time from 1977 to 1982 when a group of friends became a family. Garcia Bend was a small patch of land located between the Sacramento River on one side and Pocket Road on the other, surrounded by farmland. But for the Party Animals, the original founders of Bums Beach, it was a hideout, a clubhouse, a paradise. But all good parties come to an end. In this volume, Frank Tedrow II revisits the final weekend of the Garcia Bend party, two days of drugs, friends, mayhem, and brotherly love. The last perfect time, when this crew of close friends were still a family. That is what this book is about. Garcia Bend the people, not Garcia Bend the place.

Book Synopsis Sacramento's Greenhaven/Pocket Area by : Carol Ann Gregory
Download or read book Sacramento's Greenhaven/Pocket Area written by Carol Ann Gregory and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greenhaven/Pocket community is located just southwest of downtown Sacramento. Geographically, its unique location is within a meandering bend of the Sacramento River, thus termed "the Pocket" because it is bounded by the Sacramento River to the north, west, and south. Captured here in over 180 vintage images are the sorrows and triumphs of the area's earliest settlers, encompassing the continents of the world and spanning over a century. The Greenhaven/Pocket area was a rural farming community for 110 years before suburban development, with the most significant group of people contributing to the area's history and identity being Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Terceira. They began arriving a few years after the Gold Rush and by 1880, almost half of the Portuguese population in Sacramento County was within these townships that encompassed and surrounded the Riverside/Pocket area. Pictured here is the evolution of this thriving community, from the earliest founding families and their sprawling ranches, to the Japanese settlement of World War I, and finally to the innovative Greenhaven 70 plan development in the 1960s that laid the foundation for today's community.

Book Synopsis Linking Ecosystem Function to Microbial Diversity by : Anne E. Bernhard
Download or read book Linking Ecosystem Function to Microbial Diversity written by Anne E. Bernhard and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the link between microbial diversity and ecosystem processes is a fundamental goal of microbial ecologists, yet we still have a rudimentary knowledge of how changes in diversity affect nutrient cycling and energy transfer in ecosystems. Due to the complexity of the problem, many published studies on this topic have been conducted in artificial or manipulated systems. Although researchers have begun to expose some possible mechanisms using these approaches, most have not yet been able to produce conclusive results that relate directly to natural systems. The few studies that have explored the link between diversity and activity in natural systems have typically focused on specific nutrient cycles or processes, such as nitrification, denitrification, and organic carbon degradation pathways, and the microbes that mediate them. What we have learned from these studies is that there are often strong associations between the physical and chemical features of the environment, the composition of the microbial communities, and their activities, but the rules that govern these associations have not been fully elucidated. These earlier studies of microbial diversity and processes in natural systems provide a framework for additional studies to broaden our understanding of the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem function. The problem is complex, but with recent advances in sequencing technology, -omics, and in-situ measurements of ecosystem processes and their applications to microbial communities, making direct connections between ecosystem function and microbial diversity seems more tractable than ever.

Book Synopsis Grateful Dead and the Art of Rock Improvisation by : David Malvinni
Download or read book Grateful Dead and the Art of Rock Improvisation written by David Malvinni and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 15 years since the death of lead guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead stands as a cultural symbol of the unresolved cultural clashes of 1960s. The band’s 30-year odyssey is a testament to the American imagination, with thousands of live concert recordings by fans and the band itself, preserved alongside a cultural iconography of images, artwork, and paraphernalia. Most recently, the Grateful Dead has stepped up release of its live archive of recordings, culminating in one of the largest boxed sets of live music—73 compact discs—ever released. This publicly available archive of recorded music lays the groundwork for David Malvinni’s exploration in Grateful Dead and the Art of Rock Improvisation on the band’s musical signature as the ultimate jam band. Malvinni considers a a select group of songs from the Dead’s early repertoire, from its unique covers of “Viola Lee Blues,” “Midnight Hour,” and “Love Light” to original masterpieces like “Dark Star.” Marrying basic music analysis to philosophical frames offered by improvisatory musings of Heidegger, Derrida, and Deleuze, Malvinni outlines the core aesthetic underlying the Dead’s musical styling. In tracing the evolution of the band’s unique jam style, Malvinni outlines The Dead’s gift as gatherers and collectors of old and new soundscapes in their improvisations. Like no other band, The Dead brought together a variety of styles from roots and folk to country and free jazz to postmodern European art music. Devoted Deadheads reveled in the band’s polyglot approach to playing live, its free-wheeling and often risky efforts to reach a type of cosmic ecstasy, commonly described as the “X factor.” Although fans and scholars alike recognize the Grateful Dead as icons of the psychedelic music, the band’s improvisatory approach still remains an enigma to the uninitiated. In Grateful Dead and the Art of Rock Improvisation, Malvinni unravels this mystery, walking readers through the band’s musical decision-making process. Written for rock music fans with little to no background in music theory, and scholars and students of popular music culture, the book reveal the method behind the seeming madness of America’s greatest jam band.
