Book Synopsis Home Applications and Games by : Timothy Paul Banse
Download or read book Home Applications and Games written by Timothy Paul Banse and published by Middle Coast Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, this second edition is a faithful reproduction of the original, classic book that boasts 31 easy to use Atari BASIC programs. Simply type them in and use them to manage your checkbook or to keep an inventory of household good. You can even play graphic games, shooting down MIG fighters or battling the monster Grendel, or one of the evil Ghost Town Vampire girls. You can also compose music, encrypt or decrypt private files. What's special about this book is that its programs take advantage of all the sophistication of Atari BASIC. Its 6502 Motorola main processor talks to a separate graphics chip which offers great graphics for games, a feature that was unavailable on other home computers of the time. More particularly, in addition to graphics, Atari BASIC supports sound, (SOUND statement), graphics (GRAPHICS, SETCOLOR, COLOR, PLOT and DRAWTO) and peripheral units like joysticks (STICK, STRIG) and paddles (PADDLE, PTRIG). Other home computer users were often left with cryptic PEEKs and POKEs for such programming. As such, this book's litany of programs provides a self teaching guide to all the nuances of Atari Basic.

Book excerpt: The word "legacy" is perhaps thrown around far too much in the world of computing, but when it comes to Atari's 8-bit range it couldn't be more relevant. Fresh from designing the best-selling 2600 VCS, Atari's engineers set to work on the follow up - a powerful home computer that was equally adept at playing games. This might seem normal today but back then computers really weren't seen as games machines. Starting with the release of the Atari 400 and 800 in 1979 and continuing on with the XL and XE models, the Atari 8-bit series, as it would become known, was the very first home computer to feature custom graphics and sound chips. In fact its design would very much become the template that all subsequent home micros would follow going forward. In this book I take you on another journey through the life of the Atari 8-bit computer range looking at a varied cross section of the 8000+ games available with a review and screenshot of each one. This is not a list of the best games, a list of the worst games or indeed a complete guide to what's available. This is a meandering journey through the Atari 8-bit library from the earliest titles released at the end of the seventies, to modern homebrews and even unreleased prototypes. A Compendium of Atari 8-bit Games: Volume 2 is a celebration of the historic home micro with over 300 game reviews, important history, nostalgic memories, personal opinions, interesting stories, trivia, 3 developer interviews and so much more besides.

Book Synopsis The New Media Reader by : Noah Wardrip-Fruin
Download or read book The New Media Reader written by Noah Wardrip-Fruin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-02-14 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sourcebook of historical written texts, video documentation, and working programs that form the foundation of new media. This reader collects the texts, videos, and computer programs—many of them now almost impossible to find—that chronicle the history and form the foundation of the still-emerging field of new media. General introductions by Janet Murray and Lev Manovich, along with short introductions to each of the texts, place the works in their historical context and explain their significance. The texts were originally published between World War II—when digital computing, cybernetic feedback, and early notions of hypertext and the Internet first appeared—and the emergence of the World Wide Web—when they entered the mainstream of public life. The texts are by computer scientists, artists, architects, literary writers, interface designers, cultural critics, and individuals working across disciplines. The contributors include (chronologically) Jorge Luis Borges, Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, Ivan Sutherland, William S. Burroughs, Ted Nelson, Italo Calvino, Marshall McLuhan, Jean Baudrillard, Nicholas Negroponte, Alan Kay, Bill Viola, Sherry Turkle, Richard Stallman, Brenda Laurel, Langdon Winner, Robert Coover, and Tim Berners-Lee. The CD accompanying the book contains examples of early games, digital art, independent literary efforts, software created at universities, and home-computer commercial software. Also on the CD is digitized video, documenting new media programs and artwork for which no operational version exists. One example is a video record of Douglas Engelbart's first presentation of the mouse, word processor, hyperlink, computer-supported cooperative work, video conferencing, and the dividing up of the screen we now call non-overlapping windows; another is documentation of Lynn Hershman's Lorna, the first interactive video art installation.

Book Synopsis The Game That Never Ends by : Julien Mailland
Download or read book The Game That Never Ends written by Julien Mailland and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the fascinating legal history of the videogame industry, written for nonlawyers. Why did a judge recall FIFA 15, a nonviolent soccer game, from French shelves in 2014? Why was Vodka Drunkenski, a character in Nintendo-Japan’s Punch-Out!, renamed Soda Popinski in the US and then in Western Europe, where the pun made no sense? Why was a Dutch-American company barred by US courts from distributing a clone of Pac-Man? Julien Mailland answers all these questions and more in The Game That Never Ends, an inside look at the legal history that undergirds our favorite videogames. Drawing on a series of case studies as vignettes of the human comedy, Mailland sheds light on why and how the role of lawyers is key for understanding the videogame industry. Each chapter in The Game That Never Ends is a mini-puzzle that pieces together how an important legal issue arose, was resolved, and impacted the industry and the experience of gamers in real time. These chapters are interspersed with shorter chapters called “The Lawyer’s Corner,” opportunities to dive deeper into individual cases. Lightly footnoted, these interludes connect the previous chapters together by providing a conceptual meta-analysis. Offering a comprehensive overview of the global legal history of videogames, The Game That Never Ends will leave readers with a nuanced, in-depth, and more global understanding of the videogame industry.
