Book excerpt: For the last 20 years the dominant form of user interface has been the Graphical User Interface (GUl) with direct manipulation. As software gets more complicated and more and more inexperienced users come into contact with computers, enticed by the World Wide Web and smaller mobile devices, new interface metaphors are required. The increasing complexity of software has introduced more options to the user. This seemingly increased control actually decreases control as the number of options and features available to them overwhelms the users and 'information overload' can occur (Lachman, 1997). Conversational anthropomorphic interfaces provide a possible alternative to the direct manipulation metaphor. The aim of this paper is to investigate users reactions and assumptions when interacting with anthropomorphic agents. Here we consider how the level of anthropomorphism exhibited by the character and the level of interaction affects these assumptions. We compared characters of different levels of anthropomorphic abstraction, from a very abstract character to a realistic yet not human character. As more software is released for general use with anthropomorphic interfaces there seems to be no consensus of what the characters should look like and what look is more suited for different applications. Some software and research opts for realistic looking characters (for example, Haptek Inc., see http://www.haptek.com). others opt for cartoon characters (Microsoft, 1999) others opt for floating heads (Dohi & Ishizuka, 1997; Takama & Ishizuka, 1998; Koda, 1996; Koda & Maes, 1996a; Koda & Maes, 1996b).

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 16th International Workshop on Security Protocols, SP 2008, held in Cambridge, UK, in April 2008. The 17 revised full papers presented together with edited transcriptions of some of the discussions following the presentations have gone through multiple rounds of reviewing, revision, and selection. The theme of this workshop was “Remodelling the Attacker” with the intention to tell the students at the start of a security course that it is very important to model the attacker, but like most advice to the young, this is an oversimplification. Shouldn’t the attacker’s capability be an output of the design process as well as an input? The papers and discussions in this volume examine the theme from the standpoint of various different applications and adversaries.

Book excerpt: With globalization, interdisciplinary studies in the world of science have increased and gained importance. In particular, being able to examine the changes in social sciences in a healthy way necessitated an approach with a multidimensional perspective. This situation has increased the need for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary literature. In order to understand the importance of social sciences, first of all, it is necessary to examine what the social sciences really are and what their purpose is. Social science is essentially the study of society: it provides insight into the social environment and nature, and studies how individuals behave, communicate and relate to one another. It also analyzes how individuals' behaviors and social interactions affect the socioeconomic, political and cultural climate of the world. Social sciences and social scientists have great responsibilities in the development of society and country. As it is known, many phenomena such as reflections of socio-cultural life, human relations, political, legal and economic variables are within the scope of social and human sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of contributions to the subject of multicriteria decision making and differential games, all of which are based wholly or in part on papers that have appeared in the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications. The authors take this opportunity to revise, update, or enlarge upon their earlier publications. The theory of multicriteria decision making and differential games is concerned with situations in which a single decision maker is faced with a multiplicity of usually incompatible criteria, performance indices or payoffs, or in which a number of decision makers, or players, must take into account criteria each of which depends on the decisions of all the decision makers. The first six chapters are devoted to situations involving a single decision maker, or a number of decision makers in complete collaboration and thus being in effect a single decision maker. Chapters I -IV treat various topics in the theory of domination structures and nondominated decisions. Chapter V presents a discussion of efficient, or Pareto-optimal, decisions. The approach to multicriteria decision making via preference relations is explored in Chapter VI. When there is more than one decision maker, cooperation, as well as noncooperation, is possible. Chapters VII and VIII deal with the topic of coalitions in a dynamic setting, while Chapters IX and X address the situation of two unequal decision makers, a leader and a follower.

Book excerpt: Louis XVI was a gentle and unassuming man who did not want to be king but attempted to work for the welfare of his people--until his government was engulfed by the violent upheavals of the French Revolution. Facing the rapidly changing desires of his subjects, he gave way to the policies they demanded. Few rulers have acquiesced to such startling changes of government within such a brief span of time. Louis XVI lacked the charisma of Marie Antoinette, but he is remarkable for the courage he exhibited when facing violent armed men only a few feet away. The quiet dignity with which he approached his execution has been praised by countless people, including Albert Camus and Victor Hugo. This biography traces the painfully exciting events involving Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and their two children. The royal family was first taken by a violent mob from Versailles to Paris. They attempted an escape but it failed when they had almost reached safety. A year later the king and queen were guillotined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in Vladimir Tkachuk's series on Cp-theory gives reasonably complete coverage of the theory of functional equivalencies through 500 carefully selected problems and exercises. By systematically introducing each of the major topics of Cp-theory, the book is intended to bring a dedicated reader from basic topological principles to the frontiers of modern research. The book presents complete and up-to-date information on the preservation of topological properties by homeomorphisms of function spaces. An exhaustive theory of t-equivalent, u-equivalent and l-equivalent spaces is developed from scratch. The reader will also find introductions to the theory of uniform spaces, the theory of locally convex spaces, as well as the theory of inverse systems and dimension theory. Moreover, the inclusion of Kolmogorov's solution of Hilbert's Problem 13 is included as it is needed for the presentation of the theory of l-equivalent spaces. This volume contains the most important classical results on functional equivalencies, in particular, Gul'ko and Khmyleva's example of non-preservation of compactness by t-equivalence, Okunev's method of constructing l-equivalent spaces and the theorem of Marciszewski and Pelant on u-invariance of absolute Borel sets.
