Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of patients with colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is on the increase, the purpose of this book is to review the latest topics concerning management of the disease. In recent years, the diagnostic power of endoscopy and molecular pathology has also grown tremendously, as a result of which they now have a far greater influence on the treatment of CAC. At the moment, appropriate monitoring programs for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease remain uncertain. At the same time, the latest findings on DNA methylation and microRNAs hold the promise of making revolutionary changes in these areas. Moreover, recent drug advances in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases have changed surgical indications. On the other hand, the indication of mucosectomy on colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis and prophylactic abdominoperineal resection for Crohn’s disease remain controversial. This book provides the latest information on the remaining issues of CAC from the point of view of expert surgeons.

This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies (NGS) are revolutionizing the field of food microbiology. Microbial whole genome sequencing (WGS) can provide identification, characterization, and subtyping of pathogens for epidemiological investigations at a level of precision previously not possible. This allows for connections and source attribution to be inferred between related isolates that may be overlooked by traditional techniques. The archiving and global sharing of genome sequences allow for retrospective analysis of virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance markers, mobile genetic elements and other novel genes. The advent of high-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, in combination with the advantages offered by massively parallel second-generation sequencing for metagenomics, enable intensive studies on the microbiomes of food products and the impact of foods on the human microbiome. These studies may one day lead to the development of reliable culture-independent methods for food monitoring and surveillance. Similarly, RNA-seq has provided insights into the transcriptomes and hence the behaviour of bacterial pathogens in food, food processing environments, and in interaction with the host at a resolution previously not achieved through the use of microarrays and/or RT-PCR. The vast un-tapped potential applications of NGS along with its rapidly declining costs, give this technology the ability to contribute significantly to consumer protection, global trade facilitation, and increased food safety and security. Despite the rapid advances, challenges remain. How will NGS data be incorporated into our existing global food safety infrastructure? How will massive NGS data be stored and shared globally? What bioinformatics solutions will be used to analyse and optimise these large data sets? This Research Topic discusses recent advances in the field of food microbiology made possible through the use of NGS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytoantioxidants and Nanotherapeutics Discover the medicinal importance of antioxidant herbal medicines, phytochemicals, and nanodelivery systems for a wide range of diseases Phytomedicine has been—and continues to be—central to many cultures and societies due to its low toxicity, low cost, accessibility, and efficacy in treating difficult diseases. In fact, many plant-derived bioactive natural products serve as potential sources of drug leads or therapeutic agents in the treatment of a wide range of human diseases. When combined with nanotechnology, phytomedicine has the potential to affect and impact a tissue-specific site, which can reduce drug dosage and side effects while improving activity. Phytoantioxidants and Nanotherapeutics offers a comprehensive look at the significant role that phytomedicine-derived antioxidants play on the field of medicine, particularly when combined with the nanotechnology-derived drug delivery systems. The book thoroughly covers the herbs, plant extracts, and other dietary elements that may be used as sources of natural antioxidants and similarly highlights the use of phytomedicine- derived bioactive compounds including plant polyphenols and flavonoids to reducing the impact of oxidative stress induced human diseases. The text also demonstrates the biochemical and therapeutic targets of nanodrugs and discusses nanostructure toxicity, while emphasizing the challenges and regulatory issues involved with nanophytotherapeutics. Phytoantioxidants and Nanotherapeutics readers will also find: A helpful bridge between the cutting-edge field of nanotechnology delivery and phytotherapeutics The potential role of bioactive phytochemicals, particularly polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids, in oxidative stress-induced diseases Description of the latest developments on nanotherapeutics of phytoantioxidants for the treatment of certain chronic human diseases, such as cancer, inflammations, diabetes, viral, bacterial and parasitic infections, nervous system disorders, cardiovascular disorders, and neurological diseases. Phytoantioxidants and Nanotherapeutics is a useful reference for drug manufacturers and drug developers, formulation scientists, biomedical scientists, medicinal chemists, phytochemists, healthcare providers, and academics and researchers.

Book excerpt: Twelve-time New York Times bestselling author Mark Hyman, MD, presents his unique Pegan diet—including meal plans, recipes, and shopping lists. For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets leaving most of us bewildered and confused. For those of us on the sidelines, trying to figure out which approach is best has been nearly impossible—both extreme diets have unique benefits and drawbacks. But how can it be, we've asked desperately, that our only options are bacon and butter three times a day or endless kale salads? How do we eat to reverse disease, optimal health, longevity and performance. How do we eat to reverse climate change? There must be a better way! Fortunately, there is. With The Pegan Diet's food-is-medicine approach, Mark Hyman explains how to take the best aspects of the paleo diet (good fats, limited refined carbs, limited sugar) and combine them with the vegan diet (lots and lots of fresh, healthy veggies) to create a delicious diet that is not only good for your brain and your body, but also good for the planet. Featuring thirty recipes and plenty of infographics illustrating the concepts, The Pegan Diet offers a balanced and easy-to-follow approach to eating that will help you get, and stay, fit, healthy, focused, and happy—for life.

Book excerpt: Nutritional disorders are related to poor health outcomes including longer hospital stays, postoperative complications, cancer treatment toxicity, shorter survival, and reduced quality of life. The use of nutritional assessment tools for both diagnostic and outcome measure purposes has been widely explored. However, understanding of their responsiveness to nutritional interventions is still in its incipient stages. There has been increasing awareness of the importance of nutritional screening and assessment, especially the integration of skeletal muscle mass evaluation into clinical practice. In this context, a standardized definition of low muscle mass, myosteatosis, and muscle strength is still under debate. Since there is no clear definition of proper cut-off points for each assessment tool, the understanding and synthesis of the literature results are hindered. Moreover, the interplay among nutritional disorders has been under-explored in literature research. Efforts should be made to assess the association between comprehensive nutritional diagnosis and the prognosis of chronic diseases and surgical outcomes, as most studies provide information on one feature of nutritional status and do not explore standardized nutritional assessment widely.
