Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gallery of American Portraits Several of the following sketches have already appeared in some of the occasional productions of the author, and received the approbation of the public. It has been suggested by his friends, that as some of these sketches merit preservation, and may possibly be useful to the future historian, and that as they are now interspersed in detached volumes, it would be proper to embody them in one small work, and thus united, give them to the public. In yielding to this suggestion, it may be necessary to remark, that a more intimate acquaintance with those whose characters he has endeavored to portray, has enabled him to make some changes, and add some new traits, which will render the sketches more complete. In all these, he has carefully endeavored to avoid the indulgence of any feeling which might warp his judgment or give too rich or too dark a coloring to the picture he presents. He flatters himself that they will be found as correct as such sketches can be made, without entering minutely into the various shades or slight peculiarities of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, Vol. 2 Although guilty of some excesses while' in London, he afterwards became a model Of temperance and industry, and even reformed his brother printers by his example and exhortation. While in London, he continued to devote his leisure hours to books and study, and in 1726, after a stay of eighteen months, he returned to America, with Mr. Denham, a merchant Of Philadelphia, as his clerk, on a salary of 50 a year. On his arrival, he found that his old sweetheart, Miss Read, had been induced by her parents, in con sequence Of his neglect, which franklin justly regarded as one of the great errors of his life, to marry another man. Extraordinary circumstances, however, prevented that couple from ever living together; and, at a subsequent period, franklin married the lady, who proved an excellent and invaluable wife. His truly worthy master, Mr. Denham, died in the course of the ensuing year, when franklin returned to his original business, first under Keimer his former master, then with a young man of the name Of Meredith; they printed a newspaper, which was conducted with much ability, and acquired franklin some reputation; the project Was very profitable, and afforded him an Opportunity of distinguishing himself as a political writer. He also Opened a shop for the sale of books and stationery. In 1732, having had leisure for both reading and writing, he began to publish Poor Richard's Almanac, which he continued with great success for many years. 64 The Way to Wealth, extracted from that publication, and consisting Of numerous and valuable concise maxims, has been translated into various languages, and inserted in almost every newspaper and magazine in England and America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans Three years were passed in expe ditions of this nature, the young smn veyor making his home in his intervals of duty mostly at Mount Vernon. The health of his brother, the owner of this place, to whom he was much attached, was now failing with consumption, and George accompanied him in one of his tours for health in the autumn of 1751 to Barbadoes. As usual, he kept a journal of his observations - he was always diligent and exact in these records from a boy, so that of no one so illustrious in history have we a more perfect picture through life which tells us of the every-day living and hospitalities of the place, with a shrewd glance at its agricultural re sources and the conduct of its gover nor. A few lines cover nearly a month of the visit; they record an attack of the smallpox, of which his countenance always bore some faint traces. Leav ing his brother, partially recruited, to pursue his way to Bermuda, George re turned in February to Virginia. The health of Lawrence, however, continued to decline, and in the ensuing summer he died at Mount Vernon. The estate was left to a daughter, who, dying in infancy, the property passed, according to the terms of the will, into the pos session of George, who thus became the owner of his memorable home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Portraits, 1875-1900 To the complications which peculiarly affect work on contemporaries must be joined an increasing sense of the difficulty of accomplishing the portrayal of souls at all. More than ever I feel that such portrayal, at least as I can perform it, has no final value. Souls tremble and shift and fade under the touch. They elude and evade and mock you, fool you with false lights and perplex you with impenetrable shadows, till you are almost ready to give up in despair any effort to interpret them. But you cannot give it up; for there is no artistic effort more fascinating and no study so completely inexhaustible. If the substance on which we have to found spiritual interpretation could be relied on, we might have more confidence in the superstructure. But the further we go, the more our confidence is shaken. Take one special form of material, the report of words and conversations. All historians and biographers use such report, are tempted to use it much more than they do. Yet how abominably uncertain it is and must be. Who of uscan remember for an hour the exact words he himself used, even important words, significant words? Much more, who can remember such words of any one else? Yet diarists and biographers will go home and set down at the end of a long evening, or perhaps a day or two later, elaborate phrases which the alleged speaker may have used, and much more likely may not. And this, when the turn of a sentence may alter the light on a man's soul! Of such materials is biography made. I should not wish any one to have more confidence in mine, at least, than I have myself. I desire to acknowledge generally the courtesy and helpfulness of many correspondents who have offered useful suggestions and corrected errors. And for the Opportunity of profiting by these, I must chiefly thank the editor of the Atlantic Monthly whose steady and cordial support and sympathy enable me to prosecute my work with an enthusiasm which I could hardly draw from any other source. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Portrait Gallery: Containing Portraits and Memoirs of Men Now Living Instruction is often most effectually given by example. Not a few men, it is believed, pass their lives in obscurity and want, mainly because from the unfavorable circumstances in which their lives commence, they pass the period of youth under a vague but general impression that emi nence, in any important respect, is unattainable by them; and hence they form no fixed purpose to attain it. A better means of dissipating this delusion, rousing the minds of young men and lads to high and noble aims, and' stimulating them to the achievements of such aims, can. Hardly be adopted than holding before them the example and history of others who have pushed their way upward into affluence, honor and usefulness, from amid circumstances not less discouraging than their own. Success, though sometimes apparently flowing from the caprices of fortune, is, after all, the surest test of real merit; and it is encouraging to every young man who, repining not at the accidents of his birth, looks up with a trustful spirit to higher Spheres of usefulness and fame, to know that others have gone before him with prospects no fairer than his own, and have triumphed. The success of others gives us confidence in Ourselves. What they have done, we may do; and thus the example of those who have successfully trod any of the diversified paths of life be comes the mental heritage of every aspiring spirit, more valuable than houses or lands. It is the capital which plumes the pinions of hope the stock in trade which gives confidence to the mind, when failure might else point to despair. This work exhibits, as all biography will, that those who are most successful in obtaining honors, public respect and wealth, have not pur sued these as the end of their labors, but have obtained them as incidents to active virtues. When we make reputation, honor or riches the motives instead of the rewards of our conduct, we reverse the order which Provi dence has established, and fail of obtaining what we are perversely seek ing. When Solomon was asked what he most desired, he said, Give thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life, nor riches, nor the life of thine enemies, lo! I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given thee what thou hast not asked, both riches and honor. He asked to perform well his duties, and the performance brought with it riches and honor as incidents of duty.
