Book excerpt: As part of the SAGE Guide to Writing series, The SAGE Guide to Writing in Corrections,1e, by Steven Hougland and Jennifer Allen, focuses on teaching students how to write in the academic setting while introducing them to a number of other professional writings specific to the correctional profession, such as the pre-sentence investigation report, contact sheets, court status reports, incident reports, rehabilitation and therapy. Covering correctional institutions as well as community corrections, the goal is to interweave professional and technical writing, academic writing, and information literacy, with the result being a stronger, more confident report writer and student in corrections. This text will be a concise supplemental writing book in courses focused on writing in the criminal justice discipline, report writing, or in introductory corrections courses. It is part of a series of books on this topic that will span criminal justice, policing, corrections, and research methods.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the findings of a nationwide study on the use of private prisons in the United States. The number of these prisons grew enormously between 1987 and 1998, with proponents suggesting that allowing facilities to be operated by the private sector could result in cost reductions of 20%. The study examined the historical factors that gave rise to the higher incarceration rates, fueling the privatization movement, and the role played by the private sector in the prison system. It outlines the arguments, both in support of and opposition to, privatized prisons, reviews current literature on the subject, and examines issues that will have an impact on future privatizations. The report concludes that, rather than the projected 20-percent savings, the average saving from privatization was only about 1 percent, and most of that was achieved through lower labor costs. Nevertheless, there were indications that the mere prospect of privatization had a positive effect on prison administration, making it more responsive to reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also Serving Time informs readers about the realities of provincial and territorial prison work in Canada. Exploring the nuances of the job, Rosemary Ricciardelli shows how officer orientations and attitudes toward prisoners are interconnected and foundational in shaping their own experiences as well as those of managerial and administrative staff and prisoners themselves. Drawing on interviews with one hundred correctional officers with experience in a range of provincial and territorial prisons, Ricciardelli provides theoretical and applied explorations of officer orientations, interpretations, and risk propensity to show how perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs – both at the individual and structural levels – shape prison practices. Detailing officers' experiences working with male and female adult prison populations, Also Serving Time unpacks how gender informs the actions and self-presentation of correctional officers. Ricciardelli confirms that tasks of daily living underpinned by pervasive risk potential shape prison work. Through the officer accounts presented, the book provides an opportunity for readers to explore how punishment and "rehabilitation," gender, and the hierarchical structure of prison management together shape officers’ daily realities.

Book excerpt: This is a history of the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Shakopee which opened in 1920 and signaled the beginning of a new era. Previously, women had been held in the men's prison at Stillwater with little regard for their needs except to keep them separate from the male prisoners. But educated women became increasingly powerful agents of reform. Isabel Davis Higbee led the fight for a reformatory for women, a place with "fresh air, God's glorious sunshine, and as much freedom as is consistent with discipline." Isabel's dramatic death at the state legislature was the catalyst that created the women's reformatory at Shakopee, "one of the most unique correctional facilities in the country."

This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, about 1,600 people are released from prisons in the United States. Of these 600,000 new releasees every year, about 480,000 are subject to parole or some other kind of postrelease supervision. Prison releasees represent a challenge, both to themselves and to the communities to which they return. Will the releasees see parole as an opportunity to be reintegrated into society, with jobs and homes and supportive families and friends? Or will they commit new crimes or violate the terms of their parole contracts? If so, will they be returned to prison or placed under more stringent community supervision? Will the communities to which they return see them as people to be reintegrated or people to be avoided? And, the institution of parole itself is challenged with three different functions: to facilitate reintegration for parolees who are ready for rehabilitation; to deter crime; and to apprehend those parolees who commit new crimes and return them to prison. In recent decades, policy makers, researchers, and program administrators have focused almost exclusively on "recidivism," which is essentially the failure of releasees to refrain from crime or stay out of prison. In contrast, for this study the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the U.S. Department of Justice asked the National Research Council to focus on "desistance," which broadly covers continued absence of criminal activity and requires reintegration into society. Specifically, the committee was asked (1) to consider the current state of parole practices, new and emerging models of community supervision, and what is necessary for successful reentry and (2) to provide a research agenda on the effects of community supervision on desistance from criminal activity, adherence to conditions of parole, and successful reentry into the community. To carry out its charge, the committee organized and held a workshop focused on traditional and new models of community supervision, the empirical underpinnings of such models, and the infrastructure necessary to support successful reentry. Parole, Desistance from Crime, and Community Integration also reviews the literature on desistance from crime, community supervision, and the evaluation research on selected types of intervention.
